Muslim Attitudes Towards the European Union (Paperback): Bernd Schlipphak, Mujtaba Ali Isani Muslim Attitudes Towards the European Union (Paperback)
Bernd Schlipphak, Mujtaba Ali Isani
R671 Discovery Miles 6 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How do Muslim citizens across the globe perceive the European Union? And what factors influence their EU attitudes? This book offers the first systematic theoretical and empirical analysis of Muslim citizens' EU attitudes in and outside the European Union. Using the best empirical data available, the book demonstrates that Muslim citizens' attitudes are not shaped by their denomination and religious beliefs, but by material and political considerations. It finds that Muslims are most favourable toward the EU due to their positive experiences in European contexts, whereas in contrast, Muslim citizens outside the EU are more skeptical toward the European Union due to sovereignty concerns and the lack of support from the EU and its member states. Such findings not only contribute to the research on social legitimacy of international organizations and international public opinion more generally, but also provide important suggestions for (European) policy makers regarding external and domestic policies. This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners of European Union politics, Middle East studies, public opinion and International Relations.

WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION BY TARAN KHAN, author of Shadow City TRANSLATED FROM BENGALI BY NAZES AFROZ An intrepid traveller and true cosmopolitan, legendary Bengali writer Syed Mujtaba Ali spent a year and a half teaching in Kabul from 1927 to 1929. Curious to explore Afghan society, Mujtaba Ali had access to a cross-section of Kabul's population, and in In a Land Far from Home he chronicles his experiences with a keen eye and a wicked sense of humour. Mujtaba Ali's travels coincided with a critical point in Afghanistan's history: when the reformist King Amanullah tried to steer his country towards modernity by encouraging education for girls and giving them the choice of removing the burqa. Branded a 'kafir', Amanullah was overthrown by the bandit leader Bacha-e-Saqao. With striking parallels to twenty-first century events in the region, In a Land Far From Home is the only first-hand account of this tumultuous period by a non-Afghan. Providing a unique perspective, Mujtaba Ali's fascinating account is brought to life by contact with a colourful cast of characters at all levels of society -- from the garrulous Pathan Dost Muhammed and the gentle Russian giant Bolshov, to his servant, Abdur Rahman and his partner in tennis, the Crown Prince Enayatullah.

Technologies like "Home Automation Systems" are still under considerations and have not been developed up to the level of ultimate maturity. Targeting the challenges of the proposition of a home automation system capable of controlling house's electric appliances and providing efficient security system, a thorough research has been conducted in fields of System Automation, Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, Human Machine Interaction, Mobile Programming, Produce Line Architectures, Software Testing and Data Management Systems. Taking help from reviewed research and using our personal research and development experiences, we have proposed an approach i.e. Smart House. This book discusses in detail the way to achieve the set goals of this research along with the detailed presentation of system requirements, proposed approach, hardware and software designs, implemented prototype, testing, deployment, usage, benefits and limitations. The presented research and development has been performed as the part of author's bachelor project submitted in Fall 2002 at Punjab Institute of Computer Science, Faculty of Information Technology, University of Central Punjab, Pakistan.
