The Poor Bugger's Tool - Irish Modernism, Queer Labor, and Postcolonial History (Hardcover): Patrick R. Mullen The Poor Bugger's Tool - Irish Modernism, Queer Labor, and Postcolonial History (Hardcover)
Patrick R. Mullen
R2,579 Discovery Miles 25 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the weakening moral authority of the Catholic Church, the boom ushered in by the Celtic Tiger, and the slow but steady diminishment of the Troubles in the North, Ireland has finally stepped out from the shadows of colonial oppression onto the world stage as a major cosmopolitan country.Taking its title from a veiled reference to Roger Casement-the humanitarian and Irish patriot hanged for treason-in James Joyce's Ulysses, The Poor Bugger's Tool demonstrates how the affective labor of Irish queer culture might contribute to a progressive new national image for the Republic and Northern Ireland.
Looking back to the first wave of Irish modernism in the works of Wilde, Synge, Casement, and Joyce, Patrick Mullen reveals how these authors deployed queer aesthetics to shape inclusive forms of national affiliation as well as to sharpen anti-imperialist critiques. In its second half, the monograph turns its attention to Ireland's postmodernist boom in the works of Patrick McCabe, Neil Jordan, and Jamie O'Neill. With readings of The Butcher Boy, Breakfast on Pluto, and At Swim Two Boys, Mullen shows that queer sensibilities and style remain key cultural resources for negotiating the political and economic realities of globalization at the turn of the twenty-first century.
Buttressed by writings of theorists like Marx, Foucault, and Antonio Negri, The Poor Bugger's Tool brings Irish literature into a fruitful dialog with queer theory, postcolonial studies, the history of sexuality, and modernist aesthetics.

A unique locked-room debut with a memorable intergenerational relationship and gaming angle, about a grandmother and granddaughter who are snowed in at a lavish party at a mansion where the host has been murdered, and the unlikely sleuthing pair must draw on a unique skillset to navigate a dangerous game together

Widow Mimi lives on idyllic Mackinac Island where cars are not allowed and a Gibson with three onions at the witching hour is compulsory. Her granddaughter, Addie, is getting over the heartbreak of her fiancé, Brian, dumping her and cutting her out of the deal for the brilliantly successful video game, Murderscape, they invented together (with Addie doing most of the heavy lifting).

When Mimi gets an invitation from local socialite Jane Ireland–a seventysomething narcissist who is having an affair with her son-in-law–to a charity auction, it is the perfect excuse to get Addie to join her for the weekend. What Mimi isn’t telling Addie is that a blackmail threat from Jane looms over the party’s invitation.

In case the scene wasn’t already set for a turbulent weekend, a big storm rolls in, trapping everyone in the mansion. And then, Jane’s body is found. Soon Mimi and Addie are caught in a dangerous game, relying on their skills (Mimi loves a crossword puzzle, and Addie is a brilliant game designer, after all) to narrow down the suspects. When another body turns up, the sleuthing pair realize someone else is playing a deadly game, and they might not survive the night. . . .

Family first. Family last. The Glass family always... Charley Glass arrived in her family's lives like the hurricane she'd escaped. But she hadn't run far enough: the ruthless Giordano family are on her tail and want two things - her life, and the return of the property she stole from them. No matter how many bodies stack up. After years of hoping, Charley finally has the family she's always wanted, but now she's going to have to tell them the real reason she came looking for them. There is only one way she's going to stay alive, and that is to employ the muscle of the notorious Glass Family. The head of the family, Luke, isn't sure they're strong enough to take on one of New Orleans' biggest crime gangs. But he'd put his life on the line to protect the empire they've built - even if they'll have to take on an enemy hurting enough to cross an ocean for revenge. Page-turning, gritty, and utterly compelling, Thief is Owen Mullen's best book yet. Perfect for fans of Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers and Mandasue Heller. What readers say about Owen Mullen: 'Owen Mullen knows how to ramp up the action just when it's needed... he never fails to give you hard-hitting thrillers that have moments that will stay with you forever...' 'One of the very best thriller writers I have ever read.' 'Owen Mullen writes a good story, he really brings his characters to life and the endings are hard to guess and never what you expected.'

'A masterpiece of the genre' If you mess with the Glass family, don't expect to live to tell the tale... What was meant to be a straightforward jewellery heist goes horribly wrong, and the thieves are forced to take a hostage to make their escape. But when they discover their prisoner is the infamous Nina Glass - one of the bosses of the most dangerous criminal dynasty in London - they soon realise they have made a terrible mistake. Greed wins out over good sense and the gang decide to make the best of a bad situation. They send Luke Glass a ransom note, but they're messing with the wrong people. The Glass family have other problems. The crooked cop they have on their payroll - DCI Oliver Stanford - makes an unwelcome discovery. The insider they had all presumed dead, may in fact have survived, and still be feeding information to the police. Under attack from all sides, and desperate to save his sister, Luke has the reputation and survival of the Glass family in his hands - is this the end of their empire? Three people can keep a secret - if two of them are dead... Pacey, explosive and unforgettable, Hustle is perfect for fans of Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers and Mandasue Heller. If no one knows you're in danger, no one can save you...The Baxter house in the Lowther Hills, in Scotland, has been up for sale for decades. It's dilapidated and near-derelict, and nobody is interested in it. But for one potential buyer, the remote location and rat-infested cellar are just what he's looking for. For the first year, Mackenzie's marriage to Derek was ideal. Now though, Derek believes she is having an affair, and when she fears her husband is becoming controlling, she knows she's made a terrible mistake. But Mackenzie has a drinking problem, so when she threatens to leave Derek and then disappears, no one believes she has been abducted. It will fall to DS Geddes to untangle the truth... In the Punjab region, Dr Simone Jasnin listens to an abused woman's harrowing story just before she dies. Afra's tale of sadistic cruelty is an all too common one in the region, but Dr Jasnin is determined not to let Afra's story die with her-and she goes to Buchanan for help exposing the injustice. Seven years later, members of a prominent Pakistani family are being brutally murdered, one by one. The only clues are the hand-carved wooden bangles left at the scene of each crime. As the list of suspects grows and authorities come up short, Buchanan realizes the solution to the deadly riddle might be closer to home than he ever thought possible. 'A taut, edgy thriller. Grabs you by the guts in the first chapter and slow squeezes the breath out of you until the very last line.' Helen Fields PI Vincent Delaney thought he was done with the New Orleans Police Department. But now a string of child murders brings an unexpected invitation from the FBI, and his old boss.A serial killer is roaming the South, preying on children appearing in pageants. The police want Delaney to go undercover and use his own family as bait. Accepting would mean lying to people he loves and maybe even putting them in harm's way. It's not like Delaney doesn't have enough problems already. In Baton Rouge, a violent criminal has escaped and is seeking revenge for the brother Delaney shot dead. And north of the French Quarter, shopkeepers are being extorted-which would normally be a matter for the police, except the police are the ones responsible for the crime. Delaney has his work cut out for him. And he'll be lucky if he makes it out of this alive... Owen Mullen is a best-selling author of psychological and gangland thrillers.
