In the first months of 2020, the world came to terms with a virus that threatened life and society. Extraordinary measures were taken, the like of which we had not seen before. Airlines ground to a halt as international travel was stopped. Most countries were forced to institute draconian steps that had all but essential workers confined to home in what became known as 'lockdown'. For those who already carried the burden of health issues, extra care had to be taken to avoid coming into contact with anyone who might carry the virus. Those that could, worked from home. Many of those who could not work, were furloughed. The internet, and particularly video conferencing, took on a new dimension. Children were home-schooled. 'Zoom' entered our daily lexicon. Among the myriad ways that people demonstrated their creativity, some turned to crafts, gardening, painting, sculpting, dance, singing... Some took up writing and one posted poems on the gate post.
In Unmanageable Care, anthropologist Jessica M. Mulligan goes to work at an HMO and records what it's really like to manage care. Set at a health insurance company dubbed Acme, this book chronicles how the privatization of the health care system in Puerto Rico transformed the experience of accessing and providing care on the island. Through interviews and participant observation, the book explores the everyday contexts in which market reforms were enacted. It follows privatization into the compliance department of a managed care organization, through the visits of federal auditors to a health plan, and into the homes of health plan members who recount their experiences navigating the new managed care system. In the 1990s and early 2000s, policymakers in Puerto Rico sold off most of the island's public health facilities and enrolled the poor, elderly and disabled into for-profit managed care plans. These reforms were supposed to promote efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and high quality care. Despite the optimistic promises of market-based reforms, the system became more expensive, not more efficient; patients rarely behaved as the expected health-maximizing information processing consumers; and care became more chaotic and difficult to access. Citizens continued to look to the state to provide health services for the poor, disabled, and elderly. This book argues that pro-market reforms failed to deliver on many of their promises. The health care system in Puerto Rico was dramatically transformed, just not according to plan.
This in-depth, research-based book profiles the band that shaped a generation and changed the face of music forever. What makes a legend? The Beatles: A Musical Biography attempts to answer that question by taking an in-depth look at the band that changed pop music. Examining the events and ideas that influenced each album and many songs, the book seeks to explain what drove the Beatles to make music, as well as what drove the music itself. While the biography covers the musical history and achievements of the band, it also looks at what was happening in the lives of John, Paul, George, and Ringo during the Beatle years, exploring their personal drives and aspirations and their relationships with each other. Readers will come away from this book with a far better appreciation of the Lads from Liverpool-and of what was really going on underneath those oh-so-controversial haircuts. Ten original photos depict the Beatles from their humble beginnings to the height of their success An epilogue discusses the period after the breakup A timeline features major events and achievements of the Beatles Includes discographies of singles and albums and a list of awards

This book relates the life - and death - of the rebel German seaman who became one of the most successful U-Boat commanders of World War II. The story of Werner Henke - and a narrative outlining the history of his boat, U-515, and its crew - forms the basis for a biography of a man who defies the stereotypes of German character, who never fit in as a career officer in the German Navy, but who chose a suicidal death in acceptance of the code of the military service whose rules he continually bent and broke. Though the story Mulligan relates is engrossing and action-packed, it is also a carefully documented study that breaks new ground in uncovering the sociological background of Henke and his crew; in short, it is a study in German history as well as a biography of a U-Boat commander. Examining the backgrounds and attitudes of the crew - including their views on Hitler and the treatment of the Jews - Mulligan sheds new light on the men who constituted an elite in Hitler's Wehrmacht. The story of U-515 is also closely correlated to the overall conduct of the U-Boat war, including assessments of Karl Donitz's strategy, the influence of technological innovations, and the contributions of Allied signal intelligence. Henke's confrontation with the Gestapo and a detailed account of the sinking of the passenger liner Ceramic further add to the story, revealing the complex reality behind an image too long dominated by propaganda stereotypes.

I asked 70 strangers, 'Please give me a piece of life advice.' I used their responses as inspiration to write my next poem. This poetry collection is the result. The youngest stranger I asked was six years old. The oldest stranger was eighty-something. Some were asked in the queue at the supermarket or the post office. One time I asked the waiter at a restaurant. I also asked Joanne, who was trying to sell me car insurance over the phone. My favourite? It's hard to choose. "Don't tie your shoelace in a revolving door" said by a chap called Russell was a corker. "Spend time with the people you love" said Nicole, aged nine, on a particular day when I was feeling alone, really pulled on my heart strings. And then 'Make every day count' said Matt, was a particular fond memory. I met this stranger by chance in a woodland car park. It was a cold winter's day and I had been for a run in the woods. Caked in mud I arrived back at the car park only to find I had somehow locked my car keys in the car. He was an incredibly kind man and he drove me to my house and back to get my spare keys. During the car journey, with conversation flowing, of course I had to ask him for his life advice. When I was younger I was told, 'don't talk to strangers.' Good advice. But on this occasion, I am so glad I did.
This dictionary is designed to make the industrial vocabulary of earlier eras understandable and accessible to contemporary investigation. It brings together in one place a great deal of information that has been widely scattered in obscure places. The specialized language of the shop, the mill, and other everyday settings, although initially familiar, becomes quite foreign in the context of general lanuage. Mulligan contends that, upon close examination of this specialized vocabulary, the lives and experiences of the early workers can be better understood, thus opening another avenue in the exploration of this country's industrial heritage. As a historical barometer reflecting the extent of change in an industry, the language of particular crafts and industries brings together the social and cultural background of the participants, and the dynamic of the activity or work.
