The Journey Home (Hardcover): Leigh La Mura The Journey Home (Hardcover)
Leigh La Mura
R613 Discovery Miles 6 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since I was a child, I've been communicating with the angelic realm. They've revealed their presence in many ways, warning me through dreams of events to come and guiding my footsteps along the way. As I grew older, I learned that I could "tune in" to their frequency, allowing me to receive their messages more clearly. Their presence led me on a journey to self-discovery, allowing me to recognize and break repetitive and harmful patterns, to trust in myself again, and to discover my soul's purpose as a healer. It is a story of inner strength and faith, and as I continue on my journey, I know that I am not alone, and that the angels walk with me.

R3,028 Discovery Miles 30 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses the history of environmental science and climate change, and the initiation and development of different parameters determining climate changes. The account of the history of such changes and turmoil in India and abroad starts in the prehistoric period, long before the emergence of "Rigveda", the first human written work. The book describes the writings of Aristotle and Theophrastus on climatic disasters and their impact on the vegetation and society in Greek and Roman history, and addresses different studies related to climate change during the prehistoric period and their chronological development. The first book of its kind, it enhances our understanding the origin of research on climate change and climate related problems, and as such is a valuable resource for postgraduate students of agriculture and environment sciences, research scholars, scientists, environmentalists and policy planners.

While gender research in tourism has become increasingly important within Western academic circles, little has been written from an Asian perspective. This book is the first to address this knowledge gap and to fully explore Asian gendered identities and tourism. The chapters reflect upon the role of tourism in producing, reiterating and resisting existing gendered structures of power in Asia. The authors attempt to reconcile both Asian and Western perspectives on gender using their own personal experiences of understanding and negotiating Western and Asian identities and practices. The book paves the way for important reflections about the ontological and epistemological meanings of 'Asia', 'gender' and 'tourism'. It is an important resource for researchers from a range of disciplines including tourism, leisure studies, Asian studies and feminist and gender studies, as well as for professionals working in the tourism industry.

Maria Carla Galavotti; Translated by Hykel Hosni; Bruno De Finetti; Edited by Alberto Mura
R5,568 Discovery Miles 55 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bruno de Finetti (1906-1985) is the founder of the subjective interpretation of probability, together with the British philosopher Frank Plumpton Ramsey. His related notion of "exchangeability" revolutionized the statistical methodology. This book (based on a course held in 1979) explains in a language accessible also to non-mathematicians the fundamental tenets and implications of subjectivism, according to which the probability of any well specified fact F refers to the degree of belief actually held by someone, on the ground of her whole knowledge, on the truth of the assertion that F obtains.

R1,244 Discovery Miles 12 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Symbolic Scenarios of Islamism initiates a dialogue between the discourse of three of the most discussed figures in the history of the Sunni Islamic movement-Hasan al-Banna, Sayyid Qutb, and Osama bin Laden-and contemporary debates across religion and political theory, providing a crucial foundation upon which to situate current developments in world politics. Redressing the inefficiency of the terms in which the debate on Islam and Islamism is generally conducted, the book examines the role played by tradition, modernity, and transmodernity as major "symbolic scenarios" of Islamist discourses, highlighting the internal complexity and dynamism of Islamism. By uncovering forms of knowledge that have hitherto gone unnoticed or have been marginalised by traditional and dominant approaches to politics, accounting for central political ideas in non-Western sources and in the Global South, the book provides a unique contribution towards rethinking the nature of citizenship, antagonism, space, and frontiers required today. While offering valuable reading for scholars of Islamic studies, religious studies and politics, it provides a critical perspective for academics with an interest in discourse theory, post-colonial theory, political philosophy, and comparative political thought.

Nanotheranostics For Personalized Medicine (Hardcover): Patrick Couvreur, Simona Mura Nanotheranostics For Personalized Medicine (Hardcover)
Patrick Couvreur, Simona Mura
R3,792 Discovery Miles 37 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The application of nanotechnology in the biomedical field, known as nanomedicine, has gained much interest in the recent past as a versatile strategy for selective drug delivery and diagnostic purposes. The nanotheranostic approach, which aims to combine both therapeutic and imaging/diagnostic functionalities, is characterized by a strong pluridisciplinarity where the chemistry of materials, bioconjugate chemistry, pharmaceutical technology, drug delivery, imaging, and pharmacology, work together. Nanotheranostics combine simultaneous non-invasive diagnosis and treatment of diseases with the exciting possibility to monitor drug release and distribution in real time; thus offering the opportunity to optimize treatment outcomes in cancer and other severe diseases. Clinical applications of nanotheranostics would enable earlier detection and treatment of diseases, and earlier assessment of the response, thus allowing to identify patients which would potentially respond to therapy and have higher possibilities of a favorable outcome.Nanotheranostics for Personalized Medicine presents an integrated and transdisciplinary description of nanotheranostics. It provides principles of imaging techniques and concrete examples of advances and challenges in the development of nanotheranostics for personalized medicine. This book is written for students (Bachelors to Doctoral level) as well as experienced researchers, in academia or the industry, interested in this emerging concept in the nanomedicine field.

Uncovering the pernicious narratives white people create to justify white supremacy and sustain racist oppression The police murders of two Black men, Philando Castile and George Floyd, frame this searing exploration of the historical and fictional narratives that white America tells itself to justify and maintain white supremacy. From the country's founding through the summer of Black Lives Matter in 2020, David Mura unmasks how white stories about race attempt to erase the brutality of the past and underpin systemic racism in the present. Intertwining history, literature, ethics, and the deeply personal, Mura looks back to foundational narratives of white supremacy (Jefferson's defense of slavery, Lincoln's frequently minimized racism, and the establishment of Jim Crow) to show how white identity is based on shared belief in the pernicious myths, false histories, and racially segregated fictions that allow whites to deny their culpability in past atrocities and current inequities. White supremacy always insists white knowledge is superior to Black knowledge, Mura argues, and this belief dismisses the truths embodied in Black narratives. Mura turns to literature, comparing the white savior portrayal of the film Amistad to the novelization of its script by the Black novelist Alexs Pate, which focuses on its African protagonists; depictions of slavery in Faulkner and Morrison; and race's absence in the fiction of Jonathan Franzen and its inescapable presence in works by ZZ Packer, tracing the construction of Whiteness to willfully distorted portraits of race in America. In James Baldwin's essays, Mura finds a response to this racial distortion and a way for Blacks and other BIPOC people to heal from the wounds of racism. Taking readers beyond apology, contrition, or sadness, Mura attends to the persistent trauma racism has exacted and lays bare how deeply we need to change our racial narratives-what white people must do-to dissolve the myth of Whiteness and fully acknowledge the stories and experiences of Black Americans.

A Stranger's Journey - Race, Identity, and Narrative Craft in Writing (Hardcover): David Mura A Stranger's Journey - Race, Identity, and Narrative Craft in Writing (Hardcover)
David Mura
R2,665 Discovery Miles 26 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Long recognized as a master teacher at writing programs like VONA, the Loft, and the Stonecoast MFA, with A Stranger's Journey, David Mura has written a book on creative writing that addresses our increasingly diverse American literature. Mura argues for a more inclusive and expansive definition of craft, particularly in relationship to race, even as he elucidates timeless rules of narrative construction in fiction and memoir. His essays offer technique-focused readings of writers such as Junot Diaz, ZZ Packer, Maxine Hong Kingston, Mary Karr, and Sherman Alexie, while making compelling connections to Mura's own life and work as a Japanese American writer. In A Stranger's Journey, Mura poses two central questions. The first involves identity: How is writing an exploration of who one is and one's place in the world? Mura examines how the myriad identities in our changing contemporary canon have led to new challenges regarding both craft and pedagogy. Here, like Toni Morrison's Playing in the Dark or Jeff Chang's Who We Be, A Stranger's Journey breaks new ground in our understanding of the relationship between the issues of race, literature, and culture. The book's second central question involves structure: How does one tell a story? Mura provides clear, insightful narrative tools that any writer may use, taking in techniques from fiction, screenplays, playwriting, and myth. Through this process, Mura candidly explores the newly evolved aesthetic principles of memoir and how questions of identity occupy a central place in contemporary memoir.
