Cellular Automata and Cooperative Systems (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): N. Boccara, E. Goles, Servet Martinez, Pierre Picco Cellular Automata and Cooperative Systems (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)

R8,227 Discovery Miles 82 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book contains the lectures given at the NATO ASI 910820 "Cellular Automata and Cooperative Systems" Meeting which was held at the Centre de Physique des Houches, France, from June 22 to July 2, 1992. This workshop brought together mathematical physicists, theoretical physicists and mathe maticians working in fields related to local interacting systems, cellular and probabilistic automata, statistical physics, and complexity theory, as well as applications of these fields. We would like to thank our sponsors and supporters whose interest and help was essential for the success of the meeting: the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, the DRET (Direction des Recherches, Etudes et Techniques), the Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres, the National Science Foundation. We would also like to thank all the secretaries who helped us during the preparation of the meeting, in particular Maryse Cohen-Solal (CPT, Marseille) and Janice Nowinski (Courant Institute, New York). We are grateful for the fine work of Mrs. Gladys Cavallone in preparing this volume."

The Second Winter School on the "~hysics of Finely Divided Matter" was held at the Centre de Physique des Houches from 25 March to 5 April 1985. This meeting brought together experts from the areas of gels and porous media. People with different backgrounds - chemists, physicists - from university as well as industrial labora tories, had the opportunity to compare their most recent experimental and theoreti cal results. Although the experimental situations and techniques may seem at first sight unrelated, the theoretical interpretations are very similar and may be divided roughly into two categories: percolation and aggregation. These are present for the description of the synthesis of some gels as well as for a description of the struc ture of packings. They are also a precious help for understanding flows in porous media and hydrodynamic instabilities such as viscous fingering. A different aspect, still in its early stages, deals with the influence of a ran dom medium on a phase transition. This leads to metastable states and is interpreted in terms of random fields. The following topics were covered: introduction to physical and chemical gels structure of packings and porous media microemulsions percol ati on aggregation elastic and dielectric properties of ill-connected media properties of gels near and far from the gelation threshold flow, diffusion and dispersion in porous media transitions in porous media. Most of these are rapidly growing subjects, and we hope that these proceedings will serve as a reference for those entering this fascinating area.

The near Infra-Red emission of the Interstellar Medium is a very puzzling subject. In the brightest regions, where spectroscopic observa tions are possible from the ground, several bands (3.3 - 3.4 - 6.2 - 7.7 - 8.6 - 11.3 ~m) have been observed since 1973. The absence of satisfying explanation was so obvious that they were called "Unidenti fied IR Emission Bands". The puzzle still increased when were known the first results of the general IR sky survey made by the satellite IRAS. On a large scale, the near IR emission of the Interstellar medium was expected to be very small but it was observed to be about one third of the total IR emission for our own galaxy ..* The situation has moved in 1984 when it was suggested that a class of stable organic molecules, the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH's) could be at the origin of this near IR emission. Initially based on the required refractory character of particules that should be heated to high temperature without subliming, this hypothesis leads to a sugges tive spectroscopic similarity with the observed astronomical bands. This hypothesis is attractive and it has many implications, for ins tance, the PAHs would be the most abundant organic molecules in the universe. However, many points have to be clarified and the different consequences of this suggestion should be explored.

Partially Integrable Evolution Equations in Physics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1990): R. Conte, N.... Partially Integrable Evolution Equations in Physics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1990)

In the many physical phenomena ruled by partial differential equations, two extreme fields are currently overcrowded due to recent considerable developments: 1) the field of completely integrable equations, whose recent advances are the inverse spectral transform, the recursion operator, underlying Hamiltonian structures, Lax pairs, etc 2) the field of dynamical systems, often built as models of observed physical phenomena: turbulence, intermittency, Poincare sections, transition to chaos, etc. In between there is a very large region where systems are neither integrable nor nonintegrable, but partially integrable, and people working in the latter domain often know methods from either 1) or 2). Due to the growing interest in partially integrable systems, we decided to organize a meeting for physicists active or about to undertake research in this field, and we thought that an appropriate form would be a school. Indeed, some of the above mentioned methods are often adaptable outside their original domain and therefore worth to be taught in an interdisciplinary school. One of the main concerns was to keep a correct balance between physics and mathematics, and this is reflected in the list of courses.
