A revised text that presents specific design methods within an
overall strategy from concept to detail design The fifth edition of
Engineering Design Methods is an improved and updated version of
this very successful, classic text on engineering product design.
It provides an overview of design activities and processes,
detailed descriptions and examples of how to use key design
methods, and outlines design project strategies and management
techniques. Written by a noted expert on the topic, the new edition
contains an enriched variety of examples and case studies, and up
to date material on design thinking and the development of design
expertise. This new edition opens with a compelling original case
study of a revolutionary new city-car design by ex-Formula One
designer Gordon Murray. The study illustrates the complete
development of a novel design and brings to life the process of
design, from concept through to prototype. The core of the book
presents detailed instructions and examples for using design
methods throughout the design process, ranging from identifying new
product opportunities, through establishing functions and setting
requirements, to generating, evaluating and improving alternative
designs. This important book: Offers a revised and updated edition
of an established, successful text on understanding the design
process and using design methods Includes new material on design
thinking and design ability and new examples of the use of design
methods Presents clear, detailed and illustrated presentations of
eight key design methods in engineering product design Written for
undergraduates and postgraduates across all fields of engineering
and product design, the fifth edition of Engineering Design Methods
offers an updated, substantial, and reliable text on product design
and innovation.
Design encompasses some of the highest cognitive abilities of human beings, including creativity, synthesis and problem solving. A substantial and varied range of research methods has been developed and adopted for the analysis of design activity, but until now it has been difficult to compare the work of different researchers using different methods. This book contains the results of an international workshop held in Delft, The Netherlands, which focused on one particular research method, that of protocol analysis. Researchers from seventeen different leading centres around the world were invited to analyse the same video recordings of designers working on an engineering product design. The 20 chapters in this book are the records of that workshop, providing rich insights into the design process and an overview of accumulated knowledge on design from these researchers. There is also a discussion of the properties and limitations of protocol analysis as a research technique for analysing design activity. The book is a substantial contribution to developing understanding of the nature of design activity, and is of value to researchers, teachers and practitioners of design.
The NPS Natural Resource Program Center's Geologic Resources and
Water Resources Divisions hosted a three-day facilitated workshop
attended by 53 resource managers and staff from ocean, coastal, and
Great Lakes parks, regional offices, and central offices throughout
the National Park System. The workshop, entitled "Establishing a
Community of Practice, Formulating Guidance, and Charting a Course
for the Future," was held in Boulder, Colorado on August 25-27,
2009. The purpose of the workshop was to carry out three tasks
identified in the National Park Service national and regional ocean
stewardship strategies: (1) analyze NPS authorities, (3) identify
NPS responsibilities and opportunities, and (3) improve
communication among ocean professionals. Day One of the workshop
was a plenary session during which workshop participants gave brief
presentations on each of the five remaining high priority topics,
followed by group discussion, questions, and comments. On Days Two
and Three, the participants divided into five breakout groups.
Breakout groups analyzed the topics and possible solutions,
reported on their progress in plenary sessions on Days Two and
Three, and then revised their recommendations based on the feedback
received from the other participants. The final plenary session on
Day Three identified cross-cutting issues and tools, suggested
priorities, and addressed NPS ocean and coastal budget needs. The
next section (Summary of Workshop Results and Recommendations)
distills the three days of workshop proceedings into a concise list
of priority actions and topic-specific recommendations to guide the
direction and action items for the NPS oceans and coastal program.
The appendices summarize the workshop. Appendix A contains a list
of the participants. Appendix B describes the workshop planning,
budget, and agendas. Appendix C contains the workshop proceedings.
Written in 1927, Cross' book is the story of Dolly Copp, who
settled in Pinkham Notch in the 1840's. Dolly's husband, Hayes
Dodifer Copp, built their farmhouse to provide lodging and meals to
travelers going north to Gorham and Randolph. About her husband,
Dolly is famous saying "Hayes is well enough. But fifty years is
long enough for a woman to live with any man." George N. Cross's
Dolly Copp and the Pioneers of the Glen was originally published in
1927. Cross is the author of Randolph old and new: its ways and its
by-ways and My Childhood in Pleasant Valley published in 2012 by
SicPress. Cover image: "Peabody River."
