Written by a team of acknowledged experts, this book provides an up-to-date overview of our current understanding of bacterial glycomes, describes the main analytical methods in use and discusses recent and novel applications. The book is divided into three sections. The first section includes overviews of microbial glyconjugates, lipopolysaccharide, capsular polysaccharide, lipoarabinomannan biosynthesis, cell wall metabolism, and glycosylation of bacterial and archaeal proteins. The second section reviews the analytical approaches used in the characterization of the bacterial glycome. The final section describes applications of bacterial glycomics, including metabolic oligosaccharide labeling, the synthesis of bioactive glycans and the potential for glycoconjugate vaccines.
Spatial point processes play a fundamental role in spatial statistics and today they are a very active area of research with many new and emerging applications. Although published works address different aspects of spatial point processes, most of the classical literature deals only with nonparametric methods, and nowhere can one find a comprehensive treatment of the theory and applications of simulation-based inference. Written by researchers at the top of the field, this book collects and unifies recent theoretical advances and examples of applications. The authors examine Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms and explore one of the most important recent developments in MCMC-perfect simulation procedures.
This monograph contains many ideas on the analysis of survival data to present a comprehensive account of the field. The value of survival analysis is not confined to medical statistics, where the benefit of the analysis of data on such factors as life expectancy and duration of periods of freedom from symptoms of a disease as related to a treatment applied individual histories and so on, is obvious. The techniques also find important applications in industrial life testing and a range of subjects from physics to econometrics. In the eleven chapters of the book the methods and applications of are discussed and illustrated by examples.
An excellent guide for anyone with a water system or water system problem, Water Quality and Systems provides an A-Z reference for improving water quality, meeting new regulations, and reducing costs. Every page contains a time- and money-saving tip. The book covers water purity, renovations, design, construction, equipment, systems, cost reduction, maintenance, and more. It also includes information on the EPA's WAVE Saver program for the hotel/motel industry as well as coverage of other regulations and codes. The book is designed to make the information easy to find for the busy manager or professional who doesn't have time to wade through pages and pages of textbook approaches.
In fields such as biology, medical sciences, sociology, and economics researchers often face the situation where the number of available observations, or the amount of available information, is sufficiently small that approximations based on the normal distribution may be unreliable. Theoretical work over the last quarter-century has led to new likelihood-based methods that lead to very accurate approximations in finite samples, but this work has had limited impact on statistical practice. This book illustrates by means of realistic examples and case studies how to use the new theory, and investigates how and when it makes a difference to the resulting inference. The treatment is oriented towards practice and comes with code in the R language (available from the web) which enables the methods to be applied in a range of situations of interest to practitioners. The analysis includes some comparisons of higher order likelihood inference with bootstrap or Bayesian methods. Author resource page: http: //www.isib.cnr.it/~brazzale/AA/
