R2,301 Discovery Miles 23 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is mind? ""Can we build synthetic or artificial minds?"" Think these questions are only reserved for Science Fiction? Well, not anymore. This collection presents a diverse overview of where the development of artificial minds is as the twenty first century begins. Examined from nearly all viewpoints, Visions of Mind includes perspectives from philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, social studies and artificial intelligence. This collection comes largely as a result of many conferences and symposiums conducted by many of the leading minds on this topic. At the core is Professor Aaron Sloman's symposium from the spring 2000 UK Society for Artificial Intelligence conference. Authors from that symposium, as well as others from around the world have updated their perspectives and contributed to this powerful book. The result is a multi-disciplinary approach to the long term problem of designing a human-like mind, whether for scientific, social, or engineering purposes. The topics addressed within this text are valuable to both artificial intelligence and cognitive science, and also to the academic disciplines that they draw on and feed. Among those disciplines are philosophy, computer science, and psychology.

Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders - The Heart of the Matter (Paperback): Margo Maine, William N.... Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders - The Heart of the Matter (Paperback)
Margo Maine, William N. Davis, Jane Shure
R1,406 Discovery Miles 14 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is the first to address what really happens behind closed doors during eating disorders treatment, as most writing has only addressed theoretical approaches and behavioral strategies. The field has long needed a book that describes the heart of the matter: the therapeutic interventions and interactions that comprise life-changing treatment for this life-threatening disorder. In response to this need, the authors have created a book that reflects the individual therapeutic skills and the collective wisdom of senior clinicians, all of whom have years of experience treating anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. Intended to be a deeply thoughtful and instructive volume, Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders: The Heart of the Matter demonstrates the depth, complexity, and impact of the therapeutic process. In particular, the book articulates and explores essential points of information, issues, insights and unresolved questions about eating disorders treatment. Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders describes and explicates important treatment issues and themes in a nuanced, highly contextualized and qualitative manner. The book offers a significant reference for both novice and seasoned therapists, and it includes specific information that will serve to inform and mentor future generations of eating disorders clinicians.

Transparency 2.0 - Digital Data and Privacy in a Wired World (Paperback, New edition): Charles N. Davis, David Cuillier Transparency 2.0 - Digital Data and Privacy in a Wired World (Paperback, New edition)
Charles N. Davis, David Cuillier
R953 Discovery Miles 9 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Transparency 2.0 investigates a host of emerging issues around the collision of information and personal privacy in a digital world. Delving into the key legal concepts of information access and privacy, such as practical obscurity, the U.S. Supreme Court's central purpose test, and Europe's emerging concept of the "right to be forgotten", contributors examine issues regarding online access to court records, social media, access to email, and complications from massive government data dumps by Wikileaks, Edward Snowden, and others. They offer solutions to resolving conflict and look to the future as a new generation learns to live in an open digital world where the line between information and privacy blurs ever faster. This book is ideal for anyone interested in the legal battlefield over access and privacy, as well as for classes in the law of the media and First Amendment, privacy, journalism, and public affairs.

R1,539 Discovery Miles 15 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume presents some of the papers from the 15th Mid-America Symposium on Spectroscopy held in Chicago on June 2-5, 1964. The Mid-America Symposium is sponsored annually by the Chicago Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, in cooperation with the St. Louis, Niagara Frontier, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Milwaukee sections of the Society and the Chicago Gas Chromatography Discussion Group. Although basically a regional meeting, the Symposium continues to draw enthusiastic attendance from coast to coast and numerous foreign countries. The present volume contains 45 of the 110 papers presented at the Symposium. It is with some misgiving that we offer this volume as the proceedings of the meeting with less than half of the total papers included. However, it is the opinion of the Symposium Committee that publication of the excellent material available from the Symposium provides a valuable addition to the literature in the field of spectroscopy. Response to previous volumes of this series seems to verify this opinion. As Chairman of the Symposium and Editor of this volume, I express my sincere appreciation to the authors whose manuscripts make up this volume. I also extend my gratitude to the following members of the Symposium Committee whose time and effort made the 15th Mid-America Symposium a success. Mr. Russell J. Hansen, Exhibits; Mr. Robert L.

For the first time four crucial aspects of gastrointestinal endoscopy are combined in a single text. Drugs for sedation and monitoring of the patient are addressed with particular reference to safety issues and comfort and acceptability for the patient. Resource management and health economic techniques are applied to endoscopy to determine quality and outcome. Problems of negligence and informed consent form the basis of a medico-legal examination of endoscopic practices.

This textbook helped to define the field of Behavioural Ecology. In this fourth edition the text has been completely revised, with new chapters and many new illustrations and full colour photographs. The theme, once again, is the influence of natural selection on behaviour - an animal's struggle to survive and reproduce by exploiting and competing for resources, avoiding predators, selecting mates and caring for offspring, - and how animal societies reflect both cooperation and conflict among individuals.

Stuart A. West has joined as a co-author bringing his own perspectives and work on microbial systems into the book.Written in the same engaging and lucid style as the previous editions, the authors explain the latest theoretical ideas using examples from micro-organisms, invertebrates and vertebrates. There are boxed sections for some topics and marginal notes help guide the reader. The book is essential reading for students of behavioural ecology, animal behaviour and evolutionary biology.Key Features: Long-awaited new edition of a field-defining textbookNew chapters, illustrations and colour photographsNew co-authorFocuses on the influence of natural selection on behavior, and how animal societies reflect both cooperation and conflict among individuals

"The long-awaited update to a classic in this field is now here, presenting new direc-tions in thinking and addressing burning questions. Richly informed by progress in many other disciplines, such as sensory physiology, genetics and evolutionary theory, it marks the emergence of behav-ioural ecology as a fully fledged discipline..... This is a marvellous book, written in a lucid style. A must-read for those in the field, it is also a cornucopia of new thinking for anyone interested in evolution and behaviour."
