"Metaphors of Globalization" inquires into the power and politics
of metaphors in the making of our globalizing era. The approach is
multidisciplinary, with case studies in global finance, global
governance, literary theory, political theory, anthropology, and
sociology. By revisiting globalization through the analysis of
metaphors, this volume sheds new light on usually overlooked
dimensions of global politics, improves on many outdated
conceptualizations, and undertakes a critical analysis of existing
approaches to the study of globalization.
Shah argues that the concept of self-defense in Islamic and
International law is compatible. Al-Qaeda's declaration of Jihad
does not meet the Islamic legal test. Similarly, the invasion of
Iraq does not meet the international legal test. Dr Shah examines
those causes attributed to Islam and non-Islamic causes of
terrorism and argues that the theory of 'reactive terror' provides
the most plausible explanation for so-called Islamic terrorism. The
nature of conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq is changing and Muslim
leaders (not including Al-Qaeda or pro Anglo-American governments)
may, by consensus, declare Jihad if the occupying forces do not
withdraw. Such declaration would be according to Islamic and
international law.
The human nervous system-that most complex organization of energy
and matter-has yielded a few glimmers of understanding of its
operational me chanics during the last two decades. These have
mostly been at the biochemical level of structure and function.
Throughout history, as one of the mysteries of nature begins to
yield some insights into its function, it has been beneficial to
look at it from different points of view. We have developed a
volume on movement disorders that is primarily directed toward the
biochemical understanding of these disorders and their treatment.
Each disorder is presented from several points of view. Although
this approach leads to some repetition, it is our aim that the
final outcome be a more complete understanding. Much has been
written about movement: the beauty of the prima ballerina, the
strength of the olympic athlete, and the agility of the surgeon.
Seldom do we stop to look beneath the surface-the coordination of
muscle groups, the finely tuned balance allowing rapid response in
either direction, the individual muscle fibers coordinated to
maximize strength and agility, and the nerve fibers connecting
muscle with nerve centers. Some of these communicate sensory input
of position to the centers while others communicate directions of
move ment to muscles. We encourage our readers to be constantly
alert to the possibility of in creasing their understanding of
other nervous system functions, including thought disorder, through
an understanding of movement, either in general principle or by
specific chemical interaction."
By revisiting globalization using an analysis of metaphors, such as
'global village' and 'network society', this volume sheds new light
on overlooked dimensions of global politics, redresses outdated
conceptualizations, and provides a critical analysis of existing
approaches to the study of globalization.

This is a concise summary of information on the incidence,
diagnosis, classification and non-surgical treatment of peripheral
artery disease (PAD). PAD imposes a significant burden on health
care system. Patients suffering from PAD have leg pains, difficulty
walking, and lower extremity ulcers. If untreated, this condition
can result in limb loss. It is both a life and a limb-threatening
condition. It is important to recognise this condition early on,
even in the absence of symptoms, in order to provide the best
possible therapy in a timely manner. Early and aggressive treatment
of PAD is crucial for limb salvage. The surgical therapeutic
options for PAD are well-known and described in the literature;
however, the information on medical and other non-surgical options
for PAD is scattered and not well-summarised. In this book, the
authors have attempted to assimilate and summarise in one place all
the available information regarding the epidemiology of PAD,
clinical features of the disease, clinical and anatomical
classification of PAD, medications used to treat PAD, role of fish
oil supplementation in PAD and the endovascular therapeutic options
for PAD. The authors have summarised the latest available
endovascular interventional strategies for the management of
aortoiliac, femoropopliteal as well as infrapopliteal PAD.
Peripheral vascular intervention is an exciting and ever-changing
field, and the authors have attempted to synthesise information
from all the major and relevant studies in this field. The authors
hope that their book serves as a valuable reference resource for
clinicians who are actively involved in the management of patients
suffering from PAD, including primary care physicians,
cardiologists, vascular surgeons, and cardiovascular fellows in
training.
