In Unpredictable Agents, twelve Japanese scholars of American studies tell their stories of how they encountered "America" and came to dedicate their careers to studying it. People in postwar Japan have experienced "America" in a number of ways-through literature, material goods, popular culture, foodways, GIs, missionaries, art, political figures, celebrities, and business. By focusing on the human dimensions of the intellectuals' lives and careers, Unpredictable Agents resists such a deterministic account of complicity while recognizing the relationship between power and knowledge and the historical and structural conditions in which these scholars and their work emerged. How did these scholars encounter "America" in the first place, and what exactly constitutes the "America" they have experienced? How did they come to be Americanists, and what does being Americanists mean for them? In short, what are the actual experiences of Japan's Americanists, and what are their relationships to "America"? Reflecting both the interlocked web of politics, economics, and academics, as well as the evolving contours of Japan's Americanists, the essays highlight the diverse paths through which these individuals have come to be "Americanists" and the complex meanings that identity carries for them. The stories reveal the obvious yet often neglected fact that Japanese scholars neither come from the same backgrounds nor occupy similar identities solely because of their shared ethnicity and citizenship. The purpose of this book is to establish the foundation for a practical EFL programme based on strategy training in tertiary education sectors. We can see current patterns of oral communication strategy (OCS) usage, how far these strategies can be explicitly taught, and the extent to which strategy use can lead to improvements in oral communication ability. The effects of the strategy training are assessed by multiple data collection methods: the participants' pre- and post oral communication tests, corpus data from the tests, self-reported strategy use as determined by a questionnaire focusing on OCS usage, and retrospective protocol data for their task performance. The multiple data analysis of the study in Japanese context indicates that learners' success is due to an increased general awareness of OCSs, and the use of specific OCSs, such as maintenance of fluency, and negotiation of meaning to solve interactional difficulties. We can evaluate the robustness of these findings and consider their implications for EFL programmes.

The Mexican Transpacific: Nikkei Writing, Visual Arts, and Performance considers the influence of a Japanese ethnic background or lack thereof in the writing of several twentieth and twenty-first century Mexican authors, directors, and artists. In spite of the unquestionable influence of the Nikkei communities in Mexico's history and culture, and the numerous historical studies recently published on these two communities, the study of their cultural production and, therefore, their self-definition and how they conceive themselves has been, for the most part, overlooked. This book, a continuation of the author's previous research on cultural production by Latin American authors of Asian ancestry, focuses mostly on texts, films, and artworks produced by Asian Mexicans, rather than on the Japanese or Chinese as mere objects of study. However, it will also be contrasted with the representation of Asians by Mexican authors with no Asian ancestry. With this interdisciplinary study, the author hopes to bring to the fore this silenced community's voice and agency to historicize their own experience. The Mexican Transpacific is a much needed contribution to the fields of contemporary Mexican studies, Latin American studies, race and ethnic studies, transnational Asian studies, and Japanese diaspora studies, in light of the theoretical perspectives of cultural studies, the decolonial turn, and postcolonial theory.
