Redefining Security - Population Movements and National Security (Hardcover, New): David T. Graham, Nana Poku Redefining Security - Population Movements and National Security (Hardcover, New)
David T. Graham, Nana Poku
R2,702 Discovery Miles 27 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

International migration has become a major domestic political issue in many countries and a major topic of international debate. Thus far, most of the attention has centered on the plight of refugees or on ways to curb the flow of illegal immigrants. As more and more migrants cross interstate boundaries, however, governments are realizing that immigration and asylum problems cannot be separated from broader socio-economic and political issues; nor can they be resolved by countries acting unilaterally. Even with this understanding, attempts to develop multilateral strategies to ease international tensions arising from uncontrolled migration will be complicated by economic disparities, regional political tensions, and mounting population and ecological pressures. Internal migration, particularly in terms of forced resettlement and urbanization, also gives rise to a myriad of problems relating to aspects of security. The increase in other major population movements, such as tourism and business travel, also has implications for security. Until recently, the question "what is security?" was rarely asked in the context of these developments. This was because there was a perceived consensus on what the nature of security was. The nature of security was held to mean national, political, and military security. Thus security was virtually synonymous with "defense." The theoretical claim of this volume is that these developments are necessitating a redefinition of security. This volume provides major theoretical analyses of these trends as well as in-depth case studies that explore specific developments of major concern to scholars and other researchers involved with international relations, migration, and development issues.

The underlying objective is to help generate a timely debate and understanding of the impact of globalization on health and the plight of the vulnerable.

The Making of the Constitution of Kenya - A Century of Struggle and the Future of Constitutionalism (Paperback): Charles O.... The Making of the Constitution of Kenya - A Century of Struggle and the Future of Constitutionalism (Paperback)
Charles O. Oyaya, Nana Poku
R1,250 Discovery Miles 12 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Kenya, like the rest of Africa, has gone through three sets of constitutional crises. The first related to the trauma of colonialism and struggle for independence. The second a period of constitutional dictatorship and the clamor for reform. The third, most recent crisis, being one of identity, legitimacy and the inability of the state to discharge its functions which has resulted in civil unrest, violent ethnic conflicts, poverty, social exclusion and inequality. The Making of the Constitution of Kenya examines the processes, issues and challenges of constitution making, governance and legitimacy in that country and the lessons that can be learned for others on the continent. Equipping the reader with a sound historical perspective on constitutional developments and the crisis of constitutional legitimacy in Kenya it gives an invaluable insight into the normative and political complexities involved in evolving a truly democratic and widely acceptable constitutional order in Africa.

Security and Development in Southern Africa (Hardcover, New): Nana Poku Security and Development in Southern Africa (Hardcover, New)
Nana Poku
R2,671 Discovery Miles 26 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the end of white-dominated South Africa, many observers have argued for a positive transformation of the whole of Southern Africa based upon market integration and increased cooperation among the states of the region. Poku and the contributors to this collection re-examine this optimistic scenerio, and they point to the problems of translating good intentions into actual policies.

In reality, the economic imbalance between South Africa and its neighbors poses severe problems for the region. Far from finding a stronger ally in regional reconstruction and development, the countries in the region are finding that for many in South Africa they simply do not matter that much. The analysis points to greater polarization, which may imply greater marginalization of the poorer countries in the region. Moreover, a major widening of the gap between the richer South Africa and some or all of the weaker economies may lead to increased tensions and breakdown of regional relations, even to a situation detrimental to economic development in the region. A provocative analysis by some of the leading politico-economic thinkers of the region, the volume will be of great use to scholars, researchers, and policy makers involved with Southern African development.

The Millennium Development Goals: Challenges, Prospects and Opportunities (Paperback): Nana Poku, Jim Whitman The Millennium Development Goals: Challenges, Prospects and Opportunities (Paperback)
Nana Poku, Jim Whitman
R900 Discovery Miles 9 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the 15-year Millennium Development Goals approach their conclusion, we can now measure their larger successes and failures in more than 'snapshot' fashion; and we can begin to consider how best to shape the international development agenda for the coming decades based on what we have learned. But the performance and outlook for the MDGs can neither be reduced to the sum of its eight goals, nor be divorced from international dynamics - the hard interests of states and other actors, and the global dynamics that impact on both. For that reason, this volume balances contextual analysis, the role of formative and constraining forces, the importance of normative considerations and illuminating case studies to deliver a study of the MDGs which has depth and nuance as well as breadth. Poised between judging the recent performance and the future promise of the MDGs, this book is substantial, provocative and timely. This book was published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly.

Africa Under Neoliberalism (Paperback): Nana Poku, Jim Whitman Africa Under Neoliberalism (Paperback)
Nana Poku, Jim Whitman
R1,347 Discovery Miles 13 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The period since the 1980s has seen sustained pressure on Africa's political elite to anchor the continent's development strategies in neoliberalism in exchange for vitally needed development assistance. Rafts of policies and programmes have come to underpin the relationship between continental governments and the donor communities of the West and particularly their institutions of global governance - the International Financial Institutions. Over time, these policies and programmes have sought to transform the authority and capacity of the state to effect social, political and economic change, while opening up the domestic space for transnational capital and ideas. The outcome is a continent now more open to international capital, export-oriented and liberal in its political governance. Has neoliberalism finally arrested under development in Africa? Bringing together leading researchers and analysts to examine key questions from a multidisciplinary perspective, this book involves a fundamental departure from orthodox analysis which often predicates colonialism as the referent object. Here, three decades of neoliberalism with its complex social and economic philosophy are given primacy. With the changed focus, an elucidation of the relationship between global development and local changes is examined through a myriad of pressing contemporary issues to offer a critical multi-disciplinary appraisal of challenge and change in Africa over the past three decades.

Politics in Africa - A New Introduction (Hardcover): Nana Poku, Anna Mdee Politics in Africa - A New Introduction (Hardcover)
Nana Poku, Anna Mdee
R3,193 Discovery Miles 31 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Democracy, prosperity and self-rule: this was the vision of African independence. The founding father of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, claimed: "with self government, we'll transform Africa into a paradise in ten years." A mere 50 years later, Nkrumah's assurance seems no more than a distant dream. Across the continent, the "optimism" that characterized the immediate post-independence period has largely faded. Meanwhile, ordinary Africans lurch between undemocratic, unaccountable and unresponsive governments and a decaying traditional African past. How did things go so wrong? Why has the continent lagged behind others in economic development despite its potential natural resources? Why are so many African states prone to conflict? And why has democracy been slow to take root in a majority of the countries? The answers to these questions lie in complex interconnections between politics and society, between domestic and external forces. "Politics in Africa" offers a fresh perspective that makes the continent's problems more understandable, less wretched and even intensely hopeful. In doing so, it shows how many facets of traditional African values endure and that, despite unimaginable hardship, the continent is not a hopeless or even a sad place.
