The Beautiful River grows very wide in making its great bend around
western Kentucky. On the other side, its shores are low for many
miles, but well guarded by giant cottonwoods. These spectral trees
stand close to its brink and stretch their phantom arms

An artist-designer who defies classification, Pucci de Rossi
(1947-2013) was a pillar of the European art scene in the 1980s.
Originally from Verona, and trained by the American sculptor H. B.
Walker, Pucci de Rossi created his first pieces by assembling
wooden furniture to make some rather odd-looking and unstable
forms, somewhere between thrones and time machines. "My profession
was a game to me," he once remarked. "I was cutting, I was making,
I was inventing." His first designs, steeped in poetry and humour,
recalled the minimalism of Arte Povera as much as Studio Memphis'
neobaroque. Jewellery, furniture, sculpture, painting: Pucci's
universe knew no limits except those of his own imagination. In his
hands, even the most modest materials transcended themselves to
become works of great visual and functional power. This was soon
recognised; after 1985 he regularly exhibited in Paris, and in New
York at the gallery Neotu, founded by Pierre Staudenmeyer. Some of
his most notable accomplishments involve designing the layout for
the Barbara Bui boutique in Paris, and the palace of the auctioneer
Jean-Claude Binoche in Venice. In the 1990s his work was on display
at the Downtown Gallery, and in 1994-1995 he collaborated with the
CIRVA in Marseille. Shortly prior to his death, Jacques-Antoine
Granjon, one of his most faithful collectors, commissioned a sketch
for the frontage of the VentePrivee.com building in La
Plaine-Saint-Denis. Baptized 'Verona', the metallic skin covering
the facade, which was inspired by that drawing, pays tribute to him
today. Pucci de Rossi created more than 900 pieces during his
lifetime; this book gives him the commemoration he deserves.

The judge and William had gone away from the house as soon as
breakfast was over, saying they would try to return in time to see
the visitor. Miss Penelope was busy in seeing that the coffee-pot
was washed with hot water and rinsed with cold, and scoured inside
and out till it shone like burnished silver. The widow Broadnax,
too, was as busy as she ever was, sitting in her usual place in the
chimney-corner, looking like some large, clumsily graven image in
dark stone, and watching her half-sister's every movement without
winking or turning her head. So that Ruth and David were left to
follow their own fanciful devices, free to put flowers everywhere.

Take a drop of existential angst, mix with a group of old friends, stir in the sweet agony of midlife nostalgia, and you have the recipe for he Thanksgiving dinner from hell - especially when it's narrated in part by a mischievous God who pulls their strings and show us the workings. A group of cosmopolitan friends in midlife gather in New England for a Thanksgiving dinner - and are trapped there when it snows. Sean, the Irish hard-drinking poet is their host, but hasn't told them he's dying of cancer. In fact none of them would be there if they didn't have the kind of dysfunctional lives and problems which prevent them being with their own families. With the exception of the enigmatic outsider, a new young trophy wife, they all know too much about each other, their weak points and failures. Relationships and histories criss-cross; they have little in common except a mutual past and a search for meaning in the present. And meanwhile they're all at the mercy of fate - both inevitable and surprising, funny and tragic.
Lin has a husband, two daughters, and close friends. But dance is her passion. Inescapably, it imposes itself upon her, until the inevitable moment when she must choose between her family life and the all-consuming world of dance to which she aches to return.
Slow Emergencies conveys an irresistible impulse to create, and illustrates the emotional turmoil that ensues for Lin and her family. Nancy Huston, award-winning author of The Mark of the Angel, writes brilliantly here about the passage of time, the body’s vulnerability, and the solitude of creative endeavor. What results is a deeply felt novel that offers a disquieting but profoundly moving meditation on just what it means to be an artist.
The perfect antidote to the fiery rhetoric that dominates our
current national debate over religion, "The Little Book of Atheist
Spirituality" is the ideal companion to such bestsellers as "The
God Delusion" and "God Is Not Great." I n this inspiring book,
bestselling author and philosopher Andre Comte-Sponville offers a
new perspective on the question of God's existence, acknowledging
the good that has come of religion while advocating tolerance from
both believers and non-believers. Through clear, concise, and often
humorous prose, Comte-Sponville offers a convincing appeal for a
new form of spiritual life?one that at its heart celebrates the
human need to connect to one another and the universe.
