Experts in gerontology, clinical psychology, and geriatric medicine provide an analytical survey and abstracts of the significant literature and research dealing with alcoholism and aging over the last 30 years. This research guide offers a general survey with sections dealing separately with the prevalence, precipitants, effects, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of alcoholism in the older generation. The book also offers directions for future research. The narrative ends with a listing of references that have been assessed. The annotated bibliography gives abstracts for 301 sources that are arranged by types of works: bibliographies, overview articles, books and book chapters, empirical studies, and miscellaneous works. Cross-references and author and subject indexes make this guide readily accessible to students and teachers in the field of sociology, gerontology, psychology, medicine, and public health.

Suicide Among the Elderly in Long-Term Care Facilities (Hardcover, New): Barbara Brant, Aaron P. Lipman, Nancy Osgood Suicide Among the Elderly in Long-Term Care Facilities (Hardcover, New)
Barbara Brant, Aaron P. Lipman, Nancy Osgood
R2,852 Discovery Miles 28 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first large-scale study of suicide in a population of institutionalized older adults. From their findings, the authors identify the most "at risk" groups and highlight the major factors contributing to suicide in older adults in institutions. The study described in this work employed a sample survey design. More than 1000 administrators of long-term care facilities in the United States were randomly selected and surveyed about their staff and facilities, and the incidence and type of suicidal behaviors which occurred among residents in 1984 and 1985. Results of the study confirmed that suicidal behavior occurred in approximately 20 percent of the facilities who responded. High risk groups of residents included white males and the "old-old" (75 years and older). The survey reveals that certain environmental factors such as the size of the facility, staff turnover rate, per diem cost, and auspices (public, private, and religious) were related to the occurrence and outcome of suicidal behavior. Suggestions for suicide prevention, based on these findings, are also presented. The book is divided into three parts. Part One examines various types of long-term care facilities, including skilled nursing facilities, intermediate care facilities, and adult homes. Part Two highlights design, methodology, and findings from the national study of suicide in long-term care facilities. Case profiles of suicidal residents are included to provide a more personal account of suicide behavior, and to illustrate important factors in the older individual's decision to end her/his life. Case profiles of four institutions are also included to highlight environmental factors related to suicidalbehavior. Part Three focuses on suicide prevention. Suggestions on the treatment of depression in the elderly, suicide prevention techniques, and the ethics of suicide are discussed in detail. This book makes valuable reading for professionals involved in the care of the elderly.

The Science and Practice of Gerontology - A Multidisciplinary Guide (Hardcover, New): Nancy Osgood, Ann H. I. Sontz The Science and Practice of Gerontology - A Multidisciplinary Guide (Hardcover, New)
Nancy Osgood, Ann H. I. Sontz
R2,141 Discovery Miles 21 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This definitive guide encompasses past, present, and future issues of theory, research, and practice in areas of interest and specialization in aging, and represents current trends of thought on gerontology, the science of and associated practices with the elderly. This volume is a collection of articles dealing with the psychological, social, and cultural domains affecting older people and contains general biomedical understandings and practical/clinical applications. The contributors broadly outline some of the most relevant academic issues, including cross-cultural perspectives on age and aging; past and future trends in life expectancy with underlying explanations; innovations and advances in research design and methodology in the study of the aging process and the effects of age as a variable; and past and current theoretical perspectives on the psychology and sociology of aging. Some pertinent concerns for practitioners and clinicians are addressed, such as successful counseling therapies with older adults and changes in social work and rehabilitation practice with the elderly. The thought-provoking chapters provide a wide-sweeping, multidisciplinary review of a rapidly expanding field of interest and represent a definite desire among the contributors to evolve a theoretical apparatus and a related, applied arena of endeavor.

This important work on a significant and timely issue of concern will broaden our understanding and awareness of the rising number of positive efforts within gerontological studies now being derived from diverse disciplinary roots. The reader will find articles on subjects of particular interest, such as the Biology of Aging, the Psychology of Adult Development and Aging, Rehabilitation of the Elderly, and Social Work and Aging. An extraordinarily detailed reference, this work will be a valuable resource for gerontologists, social workers, psychologists, and doctors specializing in geriatrics.
