The Nasirean Ethics is the best known ethical digest to be composed
in medieval Persia, if not in all mediaeval Islam. It appeared
initially in 633/1235 when Tūsī was already a celebrated scholar,
scientist, politico-religious propagandist. The work has a special
significance as being composed by an outstanding figure at a
crucial time in the history he was himself helping to shape: some
twenty years later Tūsī was to cross the greatest psychological
watershed in Islamic civilization, playing a leading part in the
capture of Baghdad and the extinction of the generally acknowledged
Caliphate there. In this work the author is primarily concerned
with the criteria of human behaviour: first in terms of space and
priority allotted, at the individual level, secondly, at the
economic level and thirdly at the political level.

This book is published by Springer as open access under the Open
Access CC BY 4.0 Licence and under the auspices of
the International Fluid Academy (IFA,
www.fluidacademy.org). It addresses and covers key aspects
and fundamental elements of rationalized intravenous fluid therapy
for critically ill patients. Intravenous fluids are one of the most
commonly prescribed treatments in inpatient settings and are
frequently administered without appropriate evidence-based
guidelines. Despite their medicinal nature, they are often not
fully recognized as drugs or medications, with accompanying
considerations such as dosing, duration, indications,
contraindications, potential side effects, and de-escalation. The
book seeks to fill this knowledge gap. Each chapter in this book
starts with a clinical vignette and a question that relates to the
content of the chapter. This is followed by a brief summary
abstract, key learning points, the main text, and a conclusion that
answers the clinical question and summarizes the relevant take-home
messages. Additionally, each chapter includes an IFA commentary
that references the latest literature and evidence. The book
commences with an introductory chapter that provides definitions
and terminology, and is then divided into four sections. The first
section covers the basics of intravenous fluid therapy, including
traditional models of fluid compartments and their limitations in
sick patients, fluid bolus dynamics, heart-lung interactions and
their effects on fluid challenge and fluid responsiveness,
traditional and Stewart concepts of arterial blood gas analysis,
and electrolyte physiology related to clinical issues. The second
section discusses commercially available intravenous fluids, while
the third section focuses on fluid therapy in specific clinical
situations. The final section introduces the concepts of fluid
stewardship and appropriate fluid prescription. In accordance with
the mission statement of the International Fluid Academy, which
aims to foster education and to promote research on fluid
management and monitoring in critically ill and other patients,
with the ultimate goal of improving patient survival rates, this
volume makes a valuable contribution to establishing fluid
stewardship at the bedside. The contents of the book will be useful
for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare
professionals from various clinical disciplines working at the
bedside in the emergency room, operating room, or intensive care
unit who require support for their everyday clinical practice.

The NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) houses half a million
publications that are a valuable means of information to
researchers, teachers, students, and the general public. These
documents are all aerospace related with much scientific and
technical information created or funded by NASA. Some types of
documents include conference papers, research reports, meeting
papers, journal articles and more. This is one of those documents.
This report is based on an action research project which involved
service users, managers, staff and trustees. It identifies enablers
of and barriers to increased user involvement. It also describes
emerging approaches and important themes. It will help
practitioners, managers and trustees plot their own journeys
towards increased user involvement. The report: proposes
'user-centred user involvement', distinguishing it from
'management-centred user involvement', as a tool for analysing
whose interests are served; highlights critical factors that enable
change, such as: leadership style, consistent commitment, building
strong relationships and communication between decision makers and
users; can be used to assess if the conditions for developing
user-centred user involvement exist; can also be used for planning
change. This report is aimed at managers, service users, trustees
and consultants who are working to increase user involvement in
their own organisations. It will also be useful to researchers as a
contribution to knowledge and debates about user involvement.
NASA SP-2009-1704. Steven J. Dick, Editor. Based on a symposium

This manual was written for design engineers to enable them to
choose appropriate fasteners for their designs. Subject matter
includes fastener material selection, platings, lubricants,
corrosion, locking methods, washers, inserts, thread types and
classes, fatigue loading, and fastener torque. A section on design
criteria covers the derivation of torque formulas, loads on a
fastener group, combining simultaneous shear and tension loads,
pullout load for tapped holes, grip length, head styles, and
fastener strengths. The second half of this manual presents general
guidelines and selection criteria for rivets and lockbolts. To the
casual observer the selection of bolts, nuts, and rivets for a
design should be a simple task. In reality it is a difficult task,
requiring careful consideration of temperature, corrosion,
vibration, fatigue, initial preload, and many other factors. The
intent of this manual is to present enough data on bolt and rivet
materials, finishes, torques, and thread lubricants to enable a
designer to make a sensible selection for a particular design.
Locknuts, washers, locking methods, inserts, rivets, and tapped
holes are also covered.
This report grew out of a 10-week program in engineering systems
design held at Stanford University and the Ames Research Center of
the National Aeronautics and Space Administration during the summer
of 1975. The project brought together nineteen professors of
engineering, physical science, social science, and architecture,
and two co-directors. This group worked for ten weeks to construct
a convincing picture of how people might permanently sustain life
in space on a large scale. The goal of the summer study was to
design a system for the colonization of space. This report, like
the design itself, is intended to be as technologically complete
and sound as it could be made in ten weeks, but it is also meant
for a readership beyond that of the aerospace community. Because
the idea of colonizing space has awakened strong public interest,
the report is written to be understood by the educated public and
specialists in other fields. It also includes considerable
background material. The technical director, Gerard K. O'Neill of
Princeton University, made essential contributions by providing
information based on his notes and calculations from six years of
prior work on space colonization and by carefully reviewing the
technical aspects of the study.
The NASA Science Mission Directorate/Earth Science Division's
(SMD/ESD's) Earth Venture (EV) is a program element within the
Earth System Science Pathfinder Program. At the request of NASA,
this report examines the Earth Venture Instrument (EV-I) and Earth
Venture Mission (EV-M) elements of Earth Ventures and explores
lessons learned in the more than 10 years since selection of the
first EV mission, including a review of the foundational principles
and approaches underlying the program. Table of Contents Front
