The Nasirean Ethics (RLE Iran C): Nasīr ad Dīn Tūsi The Nasirean Ethics (RLE Iran C)
Nasīr ad Dīn Tūsi; Translated by G. M. Wickens
R983 Discovery Miles 9 830 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Nasirean Ethics is the best known ethical digest to be composed in medieval Persia, if not in all mediaeval Islam. It appeared initially in 633/1235 when Tūsī was already a celebrated scholar, scientist, politico-religious propagandist. The work has a special significance as being composed by an outstanding figure at a crucial time in the history he was himself helping to shape: some twenty years later Tūsī was to cross the greatest psychological watershed in Islamic civilization, playing a leading part in the capture of Baghdad and the extinction of the generally acknowledged Caliphate there. In this work the author is primarily concerned with the criteria of human behaviour: first in terms of space and priority allotted, at the individual level, secondly, at the economic level and thirdly at the political level.

R1,024 Discovery Miles 10 240 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book is published by Springer as open access under the Open Access CC BY 4.0 Licence and under the auspices of the International Fluid Academy (IFA, www.fluidacademy.org). It addresses and covers key aspects and fundamental elements of rationalized intravenous fluid therapy for critically ill patients. Intravenous fluids are one of the most commonly prescribed treatments in inpatient settings and are frequently administered without appropriate evidence-based guidelines. Despite their medicinal nature, they are often not fully recognized as drugs or medications, with accompanying considerations such as dosing, duration, indications, contraindications, potential side effects, and de-escalation. The book seeks to fill this knowledge gap. Each chapter in this book starts with a clinical vignette and a question that relates to the content of the chapter. This is followed by a brief summary abstract, key learning points, the main text, and a conclusion that answers the clinical question and summarizes the relevant take-home messages. Additionally, each chapter includes an IFA commentary that references the latest literature and evidence. The book commences with an introductory chapter that provides definitions and terminology, and is then divided into four sections. The first section covers the basics of intravenous fluid therapy, including traditional models of fluid compartments and their limitations in sick patients, fluid bolus dynamics, heart-lung interactions and their effects on fluid challenge and fluid responsiveness, traditional and Stewart concepts of arterial blood gas analysis, and electrolyte physiology related to clinical issues. The second section discusses commercially available intravenous fluids, while the third section focuses on fluid therapy in specific clinical situations. The final section introduces the concepts of fluid stewardship and appropriate fluid prescription. In accordance with the mission statement of the International Fluid Academy, which aims to foster education and to promote research on fluid management and monitoring in critically ill and other patients, with the ultimate goal of improving patient survival rates, this volume makes a valuable contribution to establishing fluid stewardship at the bedside. The contents of the book will be useful for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals from various clinical disciplines working at the bedside in the emergency room, operating room, or intensive care unit who require support for their everyday clinical practice.

R1,036 Discovery Miles 10 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This report is based on an action research project which involved service users, managers, staff and trustees. It identifies enablers of and barriers to increased user involvement. It also describes emerging approaches and important themes. It will help practitioners, managers and trustees plot their own journeys towards increased user involvement. The report: proposes 'user-centred user involvement', distinguishing it from 'management-centred user involvement', as a tool for analysing whose interests are served; highlights critical factors that enable change, such as: leadership style, consistent commitment, building strong relationships and communication between decision makers and users; can be used to assess if the conditions for developing user-centred user involvement exist; can also be used for planning change. This report is aimed at managers, service users, trustees and consultants who are working to increase user involvement in their own organisations. It will also be useful to researchers as a contribution to knowledge and debates about user involvement.

Lunar Module LM 10 Thru LM 14 Vehicle Familiarization Manual (Paperback): Grumman, Nasa Lunar Module LM 10 Thru LM 14 Vehicle Familiarization Manual (Paperback)
Grumman, Nasa
R784 R644 Discovery Miles 6 440 Save R140 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally created for NASA in 1969 by prime contractor Grumman, this Lunar Module Vehicle Familiarization Manual was mandatory reading for Apollo astronauts, contractors and NASA support staff. This version of the manual describes the so-called ELM, or Extended Lunar Modules designed for the "J"class missions Apollo 15-17 and the never-flown Apollo 18 and 19. The ELM came about as part of NASA's efforts to enhance the scientific study of the Moon and its geology. To do that, longer surface stays would be needed. To make it possible, LM 10 to LM 14 received various modifications intended to increase their payloads, and allow them to return larger samples to Earth. Over forty major changes were planned, including enlarging the fuel and oxidizer tanks on both the ascent and descent stages, extension of the descent engine nozzle to improve its efficiency and allow it to deliver more power, and added capacity of oxygen and water. Some changes, such as adding solar cells and affiliated batteries to allow surface stays of up to 72 hours, proved too difficult given the program's schedule. In the end, the maximum duration of stays on the Moon would be limited to 54 hours. The extended LM weighed up to 36,500 pounds compared to 32,000 for earlier versions. The ELM's larger payload capacity enabled it to carry the 463 pound (mass) Lunar Roving Vehicle and other scientific equipment. The LRV greatly enhanced the astronauts' range and ability to retrieve samples. It's never been easy to find a copy of this text because copies were never made available to the general public -- until now. This reprint features all the original text and diagrams. It's a wonderful reference for the space flight fan, docent or engineering buff or for anyone else who ever wondered, "How'd they do that "

R906 Discovery Miles 9 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This manual was written for design engineers to enable them to choose appropriate fasteners for their designs. Subject matter includes fastener material selection, platings, lubricants, corrosion, locking methods, washers, inserts, thread types and classes, fatigue loading, and fastener torque. A section on design criteria covers the derivation of torque formulas, loads on a fastener group, combining simultaneous shear and tension loads, pullout load for tapped holes, grip length, head styles, and fastener strengths. The second half of this manual presents general guidelines and selection criteria for rivets and lockbolts. To the casual observer the selection of bolts, nuts, and rivets for a design should be a simple task. In reality it is a difficult task, requiring careful consideration of temperature, corrosion, vibration, fatigue, initial preload, and many other factors. The intent of this manual is to present enough data on bolt and rivet materials, finishes, torques, and thread lubricants to enable a designer to make a sensible selection for a particular design. Locknuts, washers, locking methods, inserts, rivets, and tapped holes are also covered.

Review of NASA's Evidence Reports on Human Health Risks 2015 Letter Report is the third in a series of five reports from the Institute of Medicine that will independently review more than 30 evidence reports that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has compiled on human health risks for long-duration and exploration space flights. This report builds on the 2008 IOM report Review of NASA's Human Research Program Evidence Books: A Letter Report, which provided an initial and brief review of the evidence reports. This letter report reviews seven evidence reports and examines the quality of the evidence, analysis, and overall construction of each report; identifies existing gaps in report content; and provides suggestions for additional sources of expert input. The report analyzes each evidence report's overall quality, which included readability; internal consistency; the source and breadth of cited evidence; identification of existing knowledge and research gaps; authorship expertise; and, if applicable, response to recommendations from the 2008 IOM letter report.
