FULL COLOR PUBLICATION. Global megatrends for the next 20 years and
how they will affect the United States. This is the fifth
installment in the National Intelligence Council's series aimed at
providing a framework for thinking about possible futures and their
implications. The report is intended to stimulate strategic
thinking about the rapid and vast geopolitical changes
characterizing the world today and possible global trajectories
during the next 15-20 years by identifying critical trends and
potential discontinuities. The authors distinguish between
megatrends, those factors that will likely occur under any
scenario, and game-changers, critical variables whose trajectories
are far less certain. Appropriate for anyone, from business to
banks, government to start-ups, technology to teachers and more,
this publication helps anticipate where the world will be socially,
politically, technically and culturally over the next few decades.

From the Muslimization of Western Europe to the impact of HIV/AIDS
around the planet, from the trials of the coming post-petroleum
world to the tactical implications of an ice-free Arctic, the
nations of Earth are facing more radical change than ever before in
the first quarter of the 21st century. This important government
report-from the United States NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE COUNCIL, which
has been producing assessments of national security issues for
senior U.S. policy makers since 1979-casts a strategic eye at the
near future and examines those factors and trends that will most
dramatically shape it: the rapidly globalizing economy the growing
global middle class the challenges of aging populations migration,
urbanization, and ethnic shifts the rising heavyweights: India and
China the geopolitics of energy, water, food and climate change the
risk of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East terrorism
power-sharing in a multipolar world and more. Students of political
trends, forward-looking entrepreneurs, and anyone eager for a
glimpse into the next decades will find this essential reading.
Mapping the Global Future: Report of the National Intelligence
Council's 2020 Project is the third unclassified report prepared by
the National Intelligence Council (NIC) in recent years that takes
a long-term view of the future. It offers a fresh look at how key
global trends might develop over the next decade and a half to
influence world events. Mindful that there are many possible
"futures," our report offers a range of possibilities and potential
discontinuities, as a way of opening our minds to developments we
might otherwise miss. As I used to say to my students at Princeton,
linear analysis will get you a much-changed caterpillar, but it
won't get you a butterfly. For that you need a leap of imagination.
We hope this project, and the dialogue it stimulates, will help us
make that leap --not to predict the world of 2020, which is clearly
beyond our capacity-- but to better prepare for the kinds of
challenges that may lie ahead. --- Robert L. Hutchings
