Surprised by Sin - The Reader in Paradise Lost (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1997): Stanley Fish, Nausheen Anwar Surprised by Sin - The Reader in Paradise Lost (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1997)
Stanley Fish, Nausheen Anwar
R4,277 Discovery Miles 42 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1967 the world of Milton studies was divided into two armed camps, one proclaiming that Milton was of the devil's party, the other proclaiming that the poet's sympathies are obviously with God and the angels loyal to him. The achievement of Stanley Fish's Surprised by Sin was to reconcile the two camps by subsuming their claims in a single overarching thesis: Paradise Lost is a poem about how its readers came to be the way they are and therefore the fact of their divided responses makes perfect sense. Thirty years later the issues raised in Surprised by Sin continue to set the agenda and drive debate.

Decent Work: Concept, Theory and Measurement (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Nausheen Nizami, Narayan Prasad Decent Work: Concept, Theory and Measurement (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Nausheen Nizami, Narayan Prasad
R4,230 Discovery Miles 42 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book introduces readers to the concept and theories of decent work and provides a framework for measuring it at the micro, meso and macro level in a given country. Further, it addresses the importance of measuring decent work in today's world and in connection with the different challenges countries face depending on their respective stage of development. The essence of the book lies in highlighting the practical applications of decent work in terms of its ability to deliver empirical measurements of qualitative and subjective phenomena with a mixed-methods approach combining tools and techniques from economics and statistics. Moreover, as the applicability of decent work is not confined to the IT industry and formal sectors of the economy, the book also provides useful guidelines on how further empirical studies can be undertaken to measure decent work in non-IT industries. As such, the book offers a rich compilation of empirical and theoretical contributions on decent work designed to not only enrich readers' understanding, but also promote awareness of the practical relevance and technical aspects of the subject matter.

Toward a Positive Psychology of Islam and Muslims - Spirituality, struggle, and social justice (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021):... Toward a Positive Psychology of Islam and Muslims - Spirituality, struggle, and social justice (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Nausheen Pasha-Zaidi
R4,268 Discovery Miles 42 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book integrates research in positive psychology, Islamic psychology, and Muslim wellbeing in one volume, providing a view into the international experiential and spiritual lives of a religious group that represents over 24% of the world's population. It incorporates Western psychological paradigms, such as the theories of Jung, Freud, Maslow, and Seligman with Islamic ways of knowing, while highlighting the struggles and successes of minoritized Muslim groups, including the LGBTQ community, Muslims with autism, Afghan Shiite refugees, and the Uyghur community in China. It fills a unique position at the crossroad of multiple social science disciplines, including the psychology of religion, cultural psychology, and positive psychology. By focusing on the ways in which spirituality, struggle, and social justice can lead to purpose, hope, and a meaningful life, the book contributes to scholarship within the second wave of positive psychology (PP 2.0) that aims to illustrate a balance between positive and negative aspects of human experience. While geared towards students, researchers, and academic scholars of psychology, culture, and religious studies, particularly Muslim studies, this book is also useful for general audiences who are interested in learning about the diversity of Islam and Muslims through a research-based social science approach.

Written in the 1820s, Sair-ul-Manazil, as far as we know, is the first attempt to systematically list the monuments of the city of Delhi. Apart from public buildings like mosques, temples, shrines, and tombs, it lists wells, gardens, houses, shops, and stray graves. This was in itself a formidable task, and one that might easily have resulted in a very dry and tedious document. The author, however, considerably enlivens it by a description of the various localities of the city, of the people who lived and worked there in his time, social activities and fairs, and historical anecdotes connected with places and people. The original was written in Persian by a person variously known as Sangin and Sangin Beg, and the volume is translated from an Urdu translation by the late Nausheen Jaffery, with an introduction by Swapna Liddle. It also includes maps and sketches which will both illustrate the narrative and bring a visual life to it.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a unique, highly aggressive neoplasm with characteristic topographic, histologic, immunohistochemical, cytogenetic and molecular features. It chiefly affects adolescent males and young adults and is most frequently presented as a large abdominal mass with widespread peritoneal involvement at the time of diagnosis. Histologically, it is composed of nests of small, undifferentiated round or oval hyperchromatic cells embedded in abundant desmoplastic stroma. A multidisciplinary treatment including chemotherapy, aggressive debulking surgery, radiation and myeloablative chemotherapy with stem cell rescue might be the proper approach to treat this rare malignancy and may improve progression-free survival. This book presents current research in the study of the desmoplastic small round cell tumor.

This comprehensive text provides the reader with an in-depth understanding of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), and presents a practical and readable evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of patients with this condition. It highlights options for management of those patients who fail to improve with traditional reflux treatment and assists in determining the next steps in the management of this population. Information is presented from an inter-disciplinary perspective, including input by otolaryngology, gastroenterology, speech pathology, and complementary/integrative medicine. The first section of the book is dedicated to understanding the fundamentals of laryngopharyngeal reflux as a condition. It begins with a review of the fundamental anatomy and pathophysiology of LPR and summarizes the landmark and most recent advances in the scientific understanding of this condition. Subsequent chapters delve into the typical symptoms and clinical presentations of patients, with information provided on cost-effective work-up strategies to confirm the diagnosis. The second section focuses on management of this condition. It begins with a thorough review of traditional medical management, including use of proton pump inhibitors, histamine receptor antagonists, neutralizing agents, low acid diet, alkalinizing agents, and alginates. Surgical management is reviewed as well, including partial and full fundoplication operations. It concludes with "non-traditional" treatment options for LPR, with chapters dedicated to voice therapy, probiotics, herbal therapies, and integrative East-West medicine approaches. Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease will be a definitive guide for otolaryngologists, gastroenterologists, speech pathologists, and general physicians with an interest in traditional and complementary/integrative treatments for patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux.
