“How did we move from the inspiring moments of Nelson Mandela’s
release after 27 years of incarceration, and the euphoria of our
first democratic elections in 1994, to State Capture and the
disaster of Jacob Zuma’s reign – a controversial President with
over 800 charges of corruption pending? More importantly, what can
we as a nation do about it? These are big issues – but Neil Wright
does not pull any punches in bringing them out in the open and is
not shy to give his opinions and possible solutions. His core
message is that for true transformation to happen, it has to happen
from the inside out, not imposed from the top down. By embracing
the concept of “One Race, the Human Race, Now!” South Africans have
the chance to emerge from present challenges and finally shake off
the shadow of our divided past.”
Essays investigating the writings attributed to Columbanus,
influential 0c founder of Luxeuil and Bobbio. Columbanus (d.615),
the Irish monk and founder of such important centres as Luxeuil and
Bobbio, was one of the most influential figures in early medieval
Europe. His fiery personality led him into conflict with Gallic
bishops andRoman popes, and he defended his position on such
matters as monastic discipline in a substantial corpus of Latin
writings marked by burning conviction and rhetorical skill.
However, the polish of his style has raised questions about the
nature of his early training in Ireland and even about the
authenticity of the writings which have come down to us under his
name. The studies in this volume attempt to address these
questions: by treating each of the individual writings
comprehensively, and drawing on recently-developed techniques of
stylistic analysis new light is shed on Columbanus and his early
education in Ireland. More importantly, doubts over the
authenticity of certain writings attributed to Columbanus are here
authoritatively resolved, so putting the study of this cardinal
figure on a sound basis.Professor MICHAEL LAPIDGE teaches in the

A critical edition based on the eight known First Variant
manuscripts, the prime source of Wace's Roman de Brut. Geoffrey's
`history' of the British from their first colonisation of the
island under Brutus to the late 7th century AD was one of the most
influential works of the 12th century, and introduced to a wider
audience central figures in English literature, including King
Arthur and King Lear. `Wright's long introduction is a model of
meticulousness and thoroughness...a fine study and edition...In a
previous review I called Wright's edition of the vulgate text ``an
auspicious beginning'' to a series that promised to become the
standard scholarly treatment of Geoffrey's Historia...That promise
is being kept.' Lister M. Matheson, SPECULUM April 1991 A critical

A critical edition and translation of a 13th-century Latin poem
from Brittany; a retelling of Geoffrey's History emphasising the
tragic side of Britain's decline. The Gesta Regum Britannie, a
Latin poem comprising nearly 5,000 hexameters, is a vital but
little known witness to the reception of Geoffrey of Monmouth's
Historia Regum Britannie. Written shortly before the middle of the
thirteenth century, the poem is dedicated to Cadioc, bishop of
Vannes in Brittany, and so testifies to the Breton reaction to and
enthusiasm for Geoffrey's popular pseudo-history. The poem also
provides important evidence for the literary culture of
thirteenth-century Brittany. Much in the poem is original and this
new edition will bring it to a wider audience so that it may be
read in conjunction with the more familiar vernacular verse
versions of Geoffrey's Historia. NEIL WRIGHTis a SeniorMember of

An admirable piece of work that will be welcomed by the many
scholars who have long recognised the need for an easily accessible
copy of the Historia. English Historical Review An admirable piece

English Historical Review Geoffrey of Monmouth's HistoriaRegum
Britannie was one of the most influential literary works of the
12th century. It offered a new and allegedly authoritative history
of the British from their first colonisation of the island under
Brutus until the late 7th century AD; hence its immediate and
lasting popularity. The characters which the author introduced to a
wider audience have become central figures in English literature,
including the most spectacular of Geoffrey's reshapings, the figure
of King Arthur. It is Geoffrey's account of Arthur which lies
behind almost all subsequent Arthurian Romance. It is hardly
surprising that no comprehensive edition of the Historia Regum
Britannie as yet exists, because over two hundred manuscripts
survive, many of which have never been thoroughly examined. In
practical terms, this new edition, based on Bern, Burgerbibliothek,
MSD. 568, will make this important text readily availableagain; all
emendations to correct scribal errors are clearly indicated.

Translations from the Latin of the ingenious works of Aldelm, first
English man of letters. Introduction, bibliography and notes to the
texts included. Aldhelm was the first Latin poet of Europe who was
not a native speaker of Latin. The ingenuity and originality which
he brought to the task of composing Latin poetry ensured that his
poems would be widely read everywhere, but they were studied
especially in England during the early medieval period. Aldhelm's
poetic corpus includes the Carmina Ecclesiastica, a series of
dedicatory poems which contain a wealth of detail about early
Anglo-Saxon churches; the Carmen de Virginitate, a verse
counterpart to his earlier prose De Virginitate, but which includes
an extensive passage describing an allegorical battle of the vices
and virtues; a collection of 100 riddles or Enigmata, which are an
imaginative investigation of the structure of the natural world;
and a brief rhythmical poem describing the effects of a mighty
storm in southwest England. In each of the poetic genres he
essayed, Aldhelm found a host of later imitators, and it is not an
exaggeration to say that he was the most influential Latin poet
whose works were studied in Anglo-Saxon England; indeed, many
surviving Old English poems are simple translations or adaptations
of Latin poems by Aldhelm. The translations are presented here with
an introduction outlining what is known of Aldhelm's life and
writings, and an appendix by NEIL WRIGHT contains a translation of
Aldhelm's De Metris, a technical treatise on the composition of
Latin verse.
Text and translation of key Arthurian text - a major source for
scholars. Written in the 1130s, Geoffrey's imaginative history of
the Britons from Brutus to Cadwallader, the first work to recount
the woes of Lear and the glittering career of Arthur, rapidly
became a bestseller in the British Isles and Francophone Europe,
with over 200 manuscripts surviving. Yet no critical edition of the
main version has appeared since 1929. This new text, for which 14
manuscripts have been collated in full, rests on a survey of the
entire tradition; it is accompanied by a facing English
translation, prepared especially for this volume. A comprehensive
introduction discusses the status of variant versions, the shape of
the main tradition, and many questions of editorial principle;
critical notes analyse some problems raised by the transmitted
text; and there is a full index of names. MICHAEL REEVE is Kennedy
Professor of Latin Emeritus at the Faculty of Classics, University
of Cambridge; Dr NEIL WRIGHT is a Senior Language Teaching Officer
at the Faculty of History, University of Cambridge.

The sense of a group of scholars sharing work in progress comes
over on numerous occasions... a series which is a model of its
kind. EDMUND KING, HISTORY The emphasis in this collection of
recent work on the Anglo-Norman realm is particularly on narrative
sources: Dudo, Vita AEdwardi Regis, monastic chronicle audiences in
the Fens, the chronicles of Anjou, the Warenne view of the past -
and much later sources for stereotypical images of the Normans.
There are also papers analysing both charter and chronicle evidence
in reconsiderations of the succession disputes following the deaths
of William I and WilliamII. Papers range geographically from Anjou
to the Irish Sea zone. Contributors, from France and Germany as
well as from Britain, Ireland and the US, are BERNARD S. BACHRACH,
RICHARD BARBER, JULIA BARROW, CLARE DOWNHAM, VERONIQUE GAZEAU, JOHN
GRASSI, ELISABETH VAN HOUTS, JENNIFER PAXTON, NEIL STREVETT, NEIL
WRIGHT.
