This third edition of Moral Constraints on War offers a principle
by principle presentation of the ethics of war as is found in the
age-old tradition of the Just War. Parts one and two trace the
evolution of Just War Theory, analyzing the principles of jus ad
bellum and jus in bello: the principles that determine the
conditions under which it is just to start a war and then conduct
military operations. Each chapter provides a historical background
of the principle under discussion and an in-depth analysis of its
meaning. More so than in the previous editions, there is a special
focus on the transcultural nature of the principles. Besides
theoretical clarifications, each of the principles is also put to
the test with numerous historical and contemporary examples. In
Part three, Just War Theory is applied in three specific case
studies: the use of the atomic bomb against Japan in World War II,
the Korean War (1950-53), and the use of armed drones in the "war
on terror." Bringing together an international coterie of
philosophers and political scientists, this accessible and
practical guide offers both students of military ethics and of
international relations rich, up-to-date insights into the
pluralistic character of Just War Theory.
Direct, combative and wide-ranging, John Searle's philosophy has
made fundamental and lasting contributions to thinking in language,
mind, knowledge, truth and the nature of social reality. His
account of language based on speech-acts, that mind is intentional,
and the Chinese Room Argument, are just some of his most famous
contributions to philosophical thinking. In this - the first
introduction to John Searle's philosophy - Nick Fotion provides
clear and assured exposition of Searles' ideas, while also testing
and exploring their implications. The book begins by examining
Searle's work on the philosophy of language: his analysis of speech
acts such as promising, his taxonomy of speech acts and the wider
range of indirect speech acts and metaphorical uses of language.
The book then moves on to cover the philosophy of mind and outlines
Searle's ideas on international states. It introduces his notions
of 'background' and 'network', his claims for the often
unrecognized importance of consciousness, and examines his attacks
on other philosophical accounts of mind, such as materialism,
functionalism and strong AI. The final section examines Searle's
later work on the construction of social reality and concludes with
more general reflections on Searle's position vis-a-vis ontology,
epistemology, scepticism and the doctrine of 'external realism'.

Terrorism poses an undeniable threat to societies throughout the
world today. Martyr terrorism, the fastest growing form of
terrorist activity, and arguably the most effective, has become a
regular occurrence. But how has terrorist activity evolved in the
last 100 years, and what are the ethical costs of terrorism? In
this informative book, three philosophers, all experts on the
ethics of conflict, examine the various definitions of terrorism
and the nature of martyr terrorism. Through accounts of terrorist
campaigns, from 19th century Russian terrorism, to the 20th century
campaigns in Ireland , Israel and Greece , and contemporary
campaigns in Chechnya , Afghanistan and Iraq , this fascinating
book explores the ethical implications of terrorism from a
philosophical perspective. Setting out the social, psychological
and political causes of terrorism, the book interrogates the cases
for and against terrorist activity in terms of just war theory.

When we use language, we presuppose many different things. Context
is another name for these presuppositions. But it also can be the
name of all these different presuppositions ordered in a certain
way. This study of context focuses on the differences since many
studies of context focus excessively on usage found in the sciences
and in everyday observations. Other uses such as promising, giving
directions, evaluating (i.e., ranking) all sorts of things around
us, expressing our feelings, and issuing declarations (e.g., "You
are promoted") are equally important. The analogy of 'geography,'
as used in this study, suggests that one important way to study
context is to attend to all, not just one, of the "continents"
found in the "planet" that we call context. Once we learn our
geography lesson, we come to a better understanding of how context
can change, how it can be ordered, and how it can be examined. We
also learn how layered, and thus how complicated it is.
