In recent years much has been said about governance and corruption in Asia, both before and after the 1997 crisis. Nationalism in Southeast Asia seeks a definition of nationalism through examining its role in the history of Southeast Asia, a region rarely included in general books on the topic. By developing such a definition and testing it out, Nicholas Tarling hopes at the same time to make a contribution to Southeast Asian historiography and to limit its 'ghettoization'. The state building of the colonial phase 1949-1975 is seen as a directed process with unexpected outcomes: it helped to create and to provoke opposition that took the form of 'nationalist' movements. Tarling goes onto consider the role of nationalism in the 'nation-building' of the post-colonial phase, and its relationship both with the democratic aspirations associated with the winning of independence and with the authoritarianism of the closing decades of the twentieth century. With the disappearance of the imperial structures that had dominated Southeast Asia, newly independent states had to develop foreign policies of their own. But so far few if any of these states have been willing to allow the public to explore any documentation of their activities. Western opera is a globalized and globalizing phenomenon and affords us a unique opportunity for exploring the concept of "orientalism," the subject of literary scholar Edward Said's modern classic on the topic. Diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Britain at the height of the Cold War provide unique insights into the overall foreign policies of both nations. King Norodom Sihanouk's strategy of preserving the independence and integrity of Cambodia through a policy of neutrality grew ever more challenging as the Cold War heated up in Indochina and the conflict in Vietnam became a proxy war between the superpowers. Despite its alliance with the United States, Britain's diplomatic objectives in the region largely aligned with Cambodia's, and British criticism of US policy towards Cambodia was a problem in the alliance. British diplomatic records present a fascinating window into Cambodian decision-making, and the rationale behind Sihanouk's sometimes apparently irrational policies.
