A reappraisal of the links between Hanover and Great Britain,
highlighting their previously un-explored importance. The dynastic
union which existed between Great Britain and Hanover between 1714
and 1837 is often seen as simply a subject for diplomatic
historians, of not much consequence. In fact, as this book shows,
the connection between Great Britain and Hanover was an important
theme which featured significantly in political and intellectual
writing at the time, both in Hanover and in Britain, especially in
discourses, including in pamphlet literature, about the nature of
"empire", Britain's empire and Hanover's place within it. The book
traces the evolution of such thinking over the entire period of the
union, demonstrating that there was a strong European element to
British imperial thinking, alongside the well-recognised overseas
maritime commercial element. It examines how Hanover affected
British policy in Europe throughout the period, and how the British
connection affected Hanover, both in periods of peace and periods
of warfare, when Hanoverian mercenaries were used extensively by
Britain, and when Hanover often felt that its interests were not
best served by the British connection. Overall, the book shows that
Britain's relationshipwith Hanover was much deeper and more complex
than personal union, and that Europe and Hanover featured very
significantly in British imperial thinking. NICK HARDING is
Visiting Assistant Professor at the University ofNorth Florida.
Secret Societies in one form or another have existed throughout the
history of human culture. But what is their appeal? What is it that
makes so-called respectable people indulge in peculiar ceremonies,
dressed in fanciful costumes uttering blood-curdling oaths of
loyalty with the threat of death hanging over them should they
reveal the inner workings of the cult? Are these organisations
simply a way for like-minded followers to get together in a
convivial atmosphere for purely social reasons or is there really a
dark side to their activities. Are they really trying, as some have
suggested, to control world affairs for their own nefarious ends?
Are the secret societies' claims that they are in the possession of
great knowledge or valuable secrets also true? Are they really
trying to engineer history or keep hidden that which may bring
about the fall of a religion or a country? In Secret Societies,
Nick Harding describes some of the best known organisations along
with some of their least known counterparts. He highlights the
similarities that all these cults have - they all work to a similar
pattern and that basic human psychology plays a far more important
role in their continued existence and their enduring appeal than
any hidden wisdom, knowledge or world-shattering secret.

takes to maintain and develop a secret society. This book will show

To many, Urban Legends are nothing more than harmless tales told
round a camp fire, in a dormitory or round a table in a pub with
the express aim of provoking a frisson of fear in the listener
through the use of some horrific shock element in a familiar
location and to an unlucky protagonist who is known to a friend of
a friend of a friend. But is there something working at a deeper
level? We have all heard stories of the Deep Fried Rat, the Ghostly
Hitchhiker, the Hook Handed Killer or the Poodle in the Microwave
but should we take them at face value or greet them with scorn and
derision? Did the events in these tales ever really happen or are
they the product of over active imaginations fearful of the outside
world? In this book Nick Harding sets out to describe a host of
Urban Legends suggesting that we should not dismiss them purely as
nonsense nor accept them as gospel truth but by striving to
understand their underlying meanings we begin to see their true
worth as folklore for the modern world. To understand folklore and
therefore the realm of the Urban Legend is to understand the psyche
of a nation. By understanding Urban Legends we can gain an insight
into our own fears and those of our fellow human beings.
