Author Nick Johnstone unravels the all too short life and career of
one of Britain's most brilliant and troubled stars. Amy Amy Amy
tracks Winehouse's erratic journey to fame from her North London
Jewish family home, detailing her meteoric rise to stardom and the
two albums that catapulted her to the top. Her well-publicised
problems with alcohol and drugs, anorexia, bulimia and personal
relationships kept her in the headlines, always threatening to
obscure her extraordinary musical gifts. Amy Amy Amy redresses the
imbalance, giving full measure to Winehouse's talent while offering
an honest account of her multiple personal crises. This updated
edition of Amy Amy Amy takes the story up to July 2011 and Amy's
tragic and unexpected death at her home in Camden Town following an
aborted European tour and her final appearance on stage with her
goddaughter at the Roundhouse in Camden.
The threats posed by global warming continue to dominate
environmental concerns. Central to this is the part played by
greenhouse gas emissions. While various means of curbing these have
been considered, most credence is given to some sort of price-based
control. "Global Warming and Energy Demands" brings together a
range of current views on this subject. The authors of this book
consider the responsiveness of energy markets to economic controls
in order to assess the feasibility of reducing the emission of
greenhouse gases. With the focus on global warming, they address
both aggregate energy elasticities as well as those for individual
fuels with different carbon contents. Moreover, in light of the
long-term consequences of global warming as well as policies
designed to mitigate it, the work emphasizes the importance of
distinguishing between long and short-run elasticities. Other
substantive issues such as the importance of the structural
characteristics of the energy market and autonomous improvements in
energy efficiency are also discussed. The authors are drawn from
diverse backgrounds and interests, which are reflected in the
different approaches employed and the scope of the

Patti Smith is one of pop culture's true originals. The 1975
release of her debut album Horses signalled the start of a career
full of passionate commitment, abrupt gear changes and unlikely
collaborations which continues to flourish well into the 21st
century.Nick Johnstone, respected music journalist and long time
fan, unravels the story of the girl from Chicago who mixed poetry,
underground theatre, jazz and rock, and who played a key role in
shaping the New York punk scene of the mid-Seventies. From the home
town experimental poems through street performance in Paris to high
times in New York's Chelsea Hotel, from the quiet years in suburban
Detroit with husband Fred 'Sonic' to her ascension to iconic
status, the Patti Smith story is full of unexpected twists and
turns. Nick Johnstone makes fascinating sense of a complex creative
and produces a compelling insight into the life and times of a
woman who has always refused to compromise. Arthur Rimbaud, Robert
Mapplethorpe, Sam Shepherd and Bruce Springsteen are just a few who
have become associated with the Patti Smith legend. She has toured
with Bob Dylan, opened for the New York Dolls and duetted on record
with R.E.M., written songs for movies and still produces albums off
arresting originality.
This publication is a milestone in the analysis of the
distributional impacts of environmental policy, building upon
existing literature to simultaneously examine disparities in the
distribution of environmental impacts and in the distribution of
financial effects amongst households. The objectives of this new
book are threefold: * to provide a conceptual framework to better
understand the disparities in the distributional effects
(environmental and financial) of environmental policy upon the
individual household * to review empirical evidence on the
distributional implications (both financial and environmental) of
environmental policies through a number of case studies * to
analyse policy implications by reviewing challenges facing some
policymakers as they seek to design environmentally effective and
economically efficient environmental policies, while ensuring that
social concerns such as distributional effects are simultaneously
addressed. Scholars and researchers in the areas of environmental
and resource economics will find much to engage them within this
book, as will policymakers involved in environmental policy-making.
For the last 30 years, analysis of the inner workings of the firm
has been largely absent from economic assessments of environmental
policy. Recent work has highlighted the importance of understanding
a firm's commercial motivations, decision-making procedures and
organizational structure when designing and implementing public
environmental policies. Environmental Policy and Corporate
Behaviour responds to this need, investigating the many internal
challenges faced by firms seeking to implement new policies and
achieve significant and long-lasting environmental progress. The
authors provide an in-depth empirical analysis of an industrial
survey undertaken in seven OECD countries (Japan, France, Germany,
Hungary, Norway, Canada and the United States), spanning 4000
facilities in all manufacturing sectors, including small and
medium-sized enterprises. They use their findings to illustrate the
links between public (government) environmental policies and
private (firm and facility) environmental management, investments,
innovation and performance. With a specific focus on the public
policy implications of the empirical findings, the book provides a
foundation upon which to formulate public and corporate policy in
the environmental sphere. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach,
the book will appeal to academics and policymakers with an interest
in economics of the environment, as well as presenting business and
management perspectives.
Acclaimed for his good looks as much as his searing acting ability,
Canadian actor Ryan Gosling first came to attention, aged 12, as a
Mouseketeer in Disney's Mickey Mouse Club. After the show ended,
Ryan spent his teenage years acting in television, landing the lead
role in the TV show Young Hercules. Wanting to move into film, he
made his feature debut in Remember the Titans, found acclaim in The
Believer, and landed a major role alongside Sandra Bullock in
Murder By Numbers. The 2004 hit The Notebook was so romantic that
Ryan and his co-star, Rachel McAdams, ended up falling in love
off-screen as well. The film turned Ryan into a Hollywood pin-up,
after which he spent six months working in an L.A. sandwich shop,
to regain a sense of perspective. He has since played one
challenging role after another, in films such as Stay, Half Nelson,
and Lars and the Real Girl, while inching towards mainstream
success with acclaimed performances in films like Blue Valentine,
Drive, Crazy Stupid Love, and Gangster Squad. Enigmatic and humble,
with a legendary compulsion to lose himself in every role he takes
on, this is the story of an actor who is incredibly close to his
mother, plays in a band, co-owns a Moroccan restaurant in Beverly
Hills, laughs off those who tag him a sex symbol, and shrugs at the
widespread conviction that he's this generation's Marlon Brando.
The provision of water and sanitation services (WSS) in developing
countries has traditionally been the preserve of the state, but
recently there has been a move towards greater private sector
participation (PSP). While the potential economic benefits of PSP
are well-known, the authors extensively discuss the environmental
and social implications unique to the sector. The focus of the book
is on the crucial role public authorities must continue to play to
guarantee sustainability, levels of service and access to a variety
of consumers. The authors show how these objectives are realised in
very different ways - and not always successfully - in developing
countries. The authors critically review the current literature and
include new case studies from Manila, Buenos Aires, Cordoba,
Abidjan and Mexico City. Private Firms and Public Water will be of
interest to regulatory officials, economists, development
professionals and scholars, as well as government, business and
NGOs.
