Guitar Basics is a landmark method for young guitarists. It starts
at absolute beginner level and progresses to Initial/Preparatory
Grade. The method is set out in sixteen stages and contains
original pieces and traditional tunes in an array of styles
including classical, folk and world music as well as well-known
favourite film and TV themes such as James Bond, Batman and The
Flintstones. There is a thorough introduction to standard notation,
with sections on chords and TAB, whilst ensemble pieces are ideal
for group teaching, including 'Wider Opportunities'. Accompaniment
parts and teachers' notes are available in Guitar Basics Teacher's
Book, and the fun backing tracks are available to download online.
The companion book, Guitar Basics Repertoire, provides over 40 fun
solos and ensemble pieces for both individual and group learning.
It is designed to consolidate material learnt in the Guitar Basics
Tutor and present new topics, including accidentals, moving up the
neck, two-part music, arpeggios and plucked chords.
Containing over forty pieces, Guitar Basics Repertoire offers a
rich and varied mixture of folksongs from around the world (Aura
Lee, Sakura), classical tunes (Bizet - March of the Kings, J. S.
Bach - Minuet in G) and popular film music (including themes from
Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter), alongside evocative
originals (Falling Leaves, Havana Goodtime, Samurai Sword, Tudor
Dance) and established guitar repertoire by Sor and Carulli.
Designed both to consolidate the areas of study covered in Guitar
Basics and present new topics in the fun but clear style of the
popular method book, Guitar Basics Repertoire introduces
accidentals, moving up the neck, two part music, arpeggios and
plucked chords, as well as fun extended techniques that even a
beginner can master. Guitar Basics Repertoire contains both solo
and ensemble pieces, backing tracks for many of which are available
below, and is the perfect companion to Guitar Basics whether being
used for group teaching or to prepare students for graded
examinations. Both solo and ensemble repertoire is included, with
backing tracks and teachers' parts for many pieces available to
download online.
All car enthusiasts know, or think they know, what a vintage
Bentley should look like. It should have a four-seater tourer body,
and should be painted British Racing Green. But Bentleys weren't
always like that. When these cars were new, other types of body by
many different coachbuilders - saloons, limousines, fixed-head
coupes, landaulets, cabriolets, drophead coupes, sedancas de ville
- outnumbered the tourers and sports models. Sadly, these were the
bodies which were the first to be scrapped, even though their
chassis were often saved. This book uses over 200 contemporary
black-and-white illustrations and some 50 specially-shot color
photographs to tell the story of Bentley coachwork during the
1920s, and up to 1931 when the company went into receivership. Each
of the three classes of coachwork - saloons and limousines,
drophead coupes, and tourers - is traced as it evolved through that
exciting decade.
Before World War II Aston Martin had made some stunning sports cars
but had undergone numerous financial crises. The company was bought
by David Brown in 1947, and in 1950 he launched the all-new DB2
with a brilliant engine designed by W.O. Bentley. The car was a
sleek, beautiful and fast two-seater closed coupe of the highest
pedigree and led to the highly successful DB3 and DB3S racers,
which were entered by the works at Le Mans, Sebring and elsewhere,
driven by star drivers from Stirling Moss to Roy Salvadori. All
these Aston Martins are examined and analysed in detail here, with
specially commissioned colour photography of seven outstanding
examples of this rare, expensive and exotic breed of sporting motor
car. The author is Librarian of the Vintage Sports Car Club and has
written two previous titles in this series as well as the
authoritative A-Z of British Coachbuilders. * Fully illustrated:
with over 250 colour and black-and-white photographs * Models
covered: DB1 1948-50, DB2 1950-53, DB2/4 1953-55, DB2/4 MkII
1955-57, DB2/4 MkIII 1957-59, plus Competition models DB3 1951-53
and DB3S 1953-56
Coachbuilding on motor car chassis evolved from carriage building,
and the development of the coachbuilt body closely followed that of
the motor car. From the beginning of the 20th century until the
arrival in the late 1930s of unitary construction for motor cars,
in which the separate chassis and body gave way to a combined
body/chassis structure, coachbuilding flourished in Britain, with
hundreds of firms exhibiting their latest designs at motor shows
year after year. But by the outbreak of World War 2, the industry
was already in terminal decline. Many coachbuilders, like Barker or
Hooper built one-off bodies for the 'carriage trade', the noble and
wealthy who sought the distinction of choosing a style of body and
interior to suit their personal tastes and requirements, and such
bodies were naturally to be found on the most expensive makes of
motor car, like the Rolls-Royce, Bentley and exotic marques from
the Continent. Other coachbuilders aimed to produce inexpensive
bodies in series for volume manufacturers who wanted, for example,
to be able to offer a convertible version of a certain model but
did not wish to have to make the bodies themselves. Yet others
established a special relationship with a single manufacturer, like
Charlesworth with Alvis, in order to procure a steady flow of work.
This book is a comprehensive study of coachbuilding, and
coachbuilders, in Britain. The author sets the scene by describing
advances in fashions and techniques of coachbuilding in separate
chapters on the 1920s, 1930s and the postwar period. He then gives
a unique A-Z coverage of more than 300 British coachbuilders. In
addition, there is a chapter offering useful advice on assessing
thecondition, and likely repair needs, of a coachbuilt body today.
A glossary of coachbuilding terms and what they mean completes the
picture. More than 400 photographs, 50 of them in color, have been
painstakingly hunted down to illustrate coachbuilding fashions and
methods as well as the work of the coachbuilders described in the
A-Z section. This new enlarged and revised edition features brand
new entries.
A history, description and analysis of the 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 Litre
Bentleys built by Rolls-Royce during the 1930s following their
surprise takeover of Bentley Motors early in the decade.
Promoted as "the silent sports car," these cars proved to be an
extraordinary success due to their performance and manners, the
excellence of their engineering and construction, the wonderfully
attractive coachwork offered on the Bentley chassis, and the
association of the Bentley with the illustrious reputation of
Rolls-Royce.
After outlining the story of Bentley Motors and the Rolls-Royce
takeover, the author gives a thoroughgoing account of Rolls-Royces
search for a car with which to relaunch Bentley before the earlier
glories began to fade. Then he gives a highly detailed technical
analysis of the 3 1/2 Litre, covering every aspect of the chassis,
running gear, engine and transmission. This is followed by
equivalent coverage of the succeeding 4 1/2 Litre and the
short-lived Mark V. Each of these receives comprehensive treatment,
including information on differences from previous models,
revisions, the range of bodies available from coachbuilders,
performance and behavior, and appearances in competitive
events.
There are also chapters on using the cars today and on the
practicalities of ownership, with advice on parts availability,
maintenance and preservation. The 70 color photographs, some of
them specially commissioned, feature outstanding examples of the
coachbuilders art, and are backed up by some 140 images from the
archives.
