The qualitative analysis of naturally occurring discourse in
neurogenic communication disorders, specifically in dementia
studies, has experienced recent burgeoning interest from
wide-ranging disciplines. This multidisciplinarity has been
exciting, but has added contextual confusion. This book advances
the study of discourse in dementia by systematically exploring and
applying different approaches to the same free conversational data
sets, collected and transcribed by the authors. The applied
methodologies and theories comprise a useful sourcebook for
students, researchers, and practitioners alike.
The Celtic Languages describes in depth all the Celtic languages from historical, structural and sociolinguistic perspectives with individual chapters on Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Manx, Welsh, Breton and Cornish. This second edition has been thoroughly revised to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the modern Celtic languages and their current sociolinguistic status along with complete descriptions of the historical languages. This comprehensive volume is arranged in four parts. The first part offers a description of the typological aspects of the Celtic languages followed by a scene setting historical account of the emergence of these languages. This textbook describes the approaches to phonology that are most relevant to communication disorders. It examines schools of thought in theoretical phonology, and their relevance to description, explanation and remediation in the clinical context. A recurring theme throughout the book is the distinction between phonological theories that attempt elegant, parsimonious descriptions of phonological data, and those that attempt to provide a psycholinguistic model of speech production and perception. This volume takes the positive view that conversation between persons with dementia and their interlocutors is a privileged site for ongoing cognitive engagement. The book aims to identify and describe specific linguistic devices or strategies at the level of turn-by-turn talk that promote and extend conversation, and to explore real-world engagements that reflect these strategies. Final reflections tie these linguistic strategies and practices to wider issues of the "self" and "agency" in persons with dementia. The aim of this edited collection is to extend our knowledge of the important phonological concept of sonority to a range of other languages (several of them under-described languages). In previous work, sonority has most often been applied to languages commonly described in the linguistics literature. In this collection we have expanded this to include languages of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, as well as phonological development in lesser reported languages. The challenges to sonority that these studies reveal is discussed in the concluding chapters where alternatives to this concept are explored.
This book presents diverse, original research studies on typical and atypical child language acquisition in monolingual, bilingual and bi-dialectal settings, with a focus on development, assessment and research methodology. Languages investigated in the studies include underrepresented languages, such as Farsi, Greek, Icelandic, isiXhosa, Maltese, Mandarin and Slovene, without excluding representative work in major languages like English and Spanish. This book is the first in-depth investigation of the expression of agency in verbal noun and impersonal/passive constructions in medieval Welsh and Irish, drawing on a database of texts from different genres: narrative, legal, and annalistic. What differentiates this book from existing approaches to phonetic transcription and conversational analysis is that it concentrates on linking together layers of detail to result in a complete record for the entire range of transcribable behaviors. Muller's book represents the first attempt to amalgamate differing methods to give phoneticians and clinicians a transcriptional tool kit, thus allowing them to generate a rich description of their data. This approach results in a variety of layers of transcription, all or some of which are available to the clinician or researcher faced with the task of transcribing speech. The layers include a base, orthographic layer; segmental and suprasegmental phonetic layers; a gaze and gesture layer; a layer for marking aspects of discourse (e.g., overlap); and finally, a layer for highlighting behaviors of specific clinical interest (e. g., stuttering behavior). This book clearly lays out the various layers of transcription in this approach, illustrating them with normal and clinical data as well as exercises for the reader. Each chapter in the book addresses a different layer of transcription, with a final chapter illustrating how to bring the layers together. Worked examples accompany each chapter, and appendices provide a quick reference to symbols and transcription conventions.
