Nigel, B.A (Hons), Dip.H.E, who is the author of four previous
books published by Chipmunkapublishing and has spent the last year
deeply immersed in the Western philosophical tradition. This has
opened new avenues of enquire and some new solutions. The poetry
reflects these influences in part but also the struggles and trumps
of living with both mental and related physical illnesses. They are
the poems and meditations of a Phoenix, who has been left for dead
many times but he has always confounded the psychiatrists and
physicians by rising resplendent and renewed when they had left him
for dead. Nigel is currently pursuing a Humanities Degree in
Creative Writing.
It is now nine years since I almost died from a medically induced
toxic state related to medicines prescribed for mental health
issues. I now have had three previous books published by
Chipmunkapublishing and gained two new qualifications to add to my
the B.A (Hons) before the toxicity, a Certificate in English
Studies at Warwick University and this year have completed a Dip.
H.E. gained at the Open University. The doctors at the time
thought, once I had survived the toxicity, the only way ahead would
be a sort of vaguely animated death in long stay psychiatric care.
I have proofed them wrong which is not to say my body and mind have
totally recovered, but it illustrates that adversity can be
overcome. This collection of poetry, stories and explorations of
the intellect are possibly more positive, some are still quite dark
but that is in the nature of my experience and writing, than the
other collections. When confronted with one's mortality in a quite
palpable form you either sink or swim psychologically: I swam. A
desire to push the boundaries of both the creative and the
intellectual is pervasive in my work and life, I know of no other
Path. My writing and love of ideas is my salvation, not a pastime
but a vocation.
Description
This is a collection of poetry and studies which have there
origins and nature in my love of writing and ideas. This devolution
to writing and reading are essential to my being and, ironically,
contributed to my entry into the psychiatric system n 1974 just
before my 14 birthday but have sustained throughout. Books and
ideas were both an early love and haven in a troubled family. Aged
12 I met an English teacher who introduced me to new poetry and
then a radical lecturer and some of his students, we debated many
concepts and writing generally; the relationship between writing
and ideas. The increasing involvement with the crowd at the
university made the fault lines at home particularly sharp. I lived
in a bubble of revolutionaries, a few writers, a couple of artists
and many people who had simply renounced a conventional way of
life; it suited me. I went to live in an avant-garde squat in
London and was introduced to 'experimental art' such as
'happenings'. Poetry, radical ideas and everyday life simply merged
into a dream. Within a year began a period of involvement with
psychiatry which has continued to the present. I will never stopped
reading, writing and discussing books and ideas with people.
