Das Handbuch der Werkstoffprufung umfasste in der ersten Auflage 5 Bande, von denen Band I die Prufmaschinen und Sondereinrichtungen sowie die Mess verfahren und -einrichtungen, Band 11 die Prufung der metallischen Werkstoffe, Band 111 die Prufung der nichtmetallischen Baustoffe, Band IV die Papier- und Zellstoffprufung und der voraussichtlich erstmalig 1956 erscheinende Band V die Prufung der Textilien behandeln. Die erste Auflage hatte allgemeine Anerkennung gefunden. Nach dem Kriege entstand daher der Wunsch, dieses Standardwerk baldmoeglichst in einer zweiten Auflage erscheinen zu lassen, welche die deutsche und auslandische Entwicklung auf dem Gebiete des Materialprufungswesens in den Kriegs- und Nachkriegszeiten berucksichtigt. Die nach dem Kriege auftretenden Schwierigkeiten haben aber das Erscheinen der Neuauflage zunachst verzoegert. In den letzten drei Jahren konnten die Vorarbeiten dann so gefoerdert werden, dass, nachdem schon der IV. Band erschienen ist, nunmehr die Herausgabe des 11. Bandes erfolgen kann, dem in Kurze der I. Band und im Jahre 1956 der 111. Band folgen werden.
