Pengwei Du, Ning Lu
R2,658 Discovery Miles 26 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Energy storage is a main component of any holistic consideration of smart grids, particularly when incorporating power derived from variable, distributed and renewable energy resources. Energy Storage for Smart Grids delves into detailed coverage of the entire spectrum of available and emerging storage technologies, presented in the context of economic and practical considerations. Featuring the latest research findings from the world's foremost energy storage experts, complete with data analysis, field tests, and simulation results, this book helps device manufacturers develop robust business cases for the inclusion of storage in grid applications. It also provides the comparisons and explanations grid planners and operators need to make informed decisions about which storage solutions will be most successful when implemented in operational grids.

Demand Response in Smart Grids (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Pengwei Du, Ning Lu, Haiwang Zhong Demand Response in Smart Grids (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Pengwei Du, Ning Lu, Haiwang Zhong
R3,808 Discovery Miles 38 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is the first of its kind to comprehensively describe the principles of demand response. This allows consumers to play a significant role in the operation of the electric grid by reducing or shifting their electricity usage in response to the grid reliability need, time-based rates or other forms of financial incentives. The main contents of the book include modeling of demand response resources, incentive design, scheduling and dispatch algorithms, and impacts on grid operation and planning. Through case studies and illustrative examples, the authors highlight and compare the advantages, disadvantages and benefits that demand response can have on grid operations and electricity market efficiency. First book of its kind to introduce the principles of demand response; Combines theory with real-world applications useful for both professionals and academic researchers; Covers demand response in the context of power system applications.

Geotechnical Fundamentals for Addressing New World Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Ning Lu, James K. Mitchell Geotechnical Fundamentals for Addressing New World Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Ning Lu, James K. Mitchell
R4,285 Discovery Miles 42 850 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This single-volume thoroughly summarizes advances in the past several decades and emerging challenges in fundamental research in geotechnical engineering. These fundamental research frontiers are critically reviewed and described in details in lights of four grand challenges our society faces: climate adaptation, urban sustainability, energy and material resources, and global water resources. The specific areas critically reviewed, carefully examined, and envisioned are: sensing and measurement, soil properties and their physics roots, multiscale and multiphysics processes in soil, geochemical processes for resilient and sustainable geosystems, biological processes in geotechnics, unsaturated soil mechanics, coupled flow processes in soil, thermal processes in geotechnical engineering, and rock mechanics in the 21st century.

The Dynamics Of Foreign-policy Decisionmaking In China (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Ning Lu The Dynamics Of Foreign-policy Decisionmaking In China (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Ning Lu
R4,217 Discovery Miles 42 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Lu Ning, former assistant to a vice-foreign minister of China, draws on archival materials, interviews, and personal experiences, to provide unique insights into the formal and informal structures, processes, mechanisms, and dynamics of--and key players in--foreign-policy decisionmaking in Beijing. Lu Ning sheds light on controversial decisions that were made, such as China's entering the Korean War, selling DF-3 missiles to Saudi Arabia in 1986, and cooperating with the Israeli defense establishment.Lu Ning divulges the inner workings of Beijing's foreign ministry, introduces new Chinese language sources, and presents a series of case studies that challenge existing Western theoretical analysis of Chinese policymaking. Based on his examination of the past forty years, Lu Ning makes predictions about likely changes in Beijing's leadership and in its foreign-policy decisionmaking process. This accessibly written, incisive book will be invaluable to anyone interested in Sinology, Chinese foreign policy, comparative foreign policy, and contemporary international relations of East Asia. This second edition contains a fully revised Introduction, and it has been updated through President Clinton's recent visit to China. The new edition also contains new material on the Clinton Administration's varying policy positions toward China.

Capacity Analysis of Vehicular Communication Networks (Paperback, 2014 ed.): Ning Lu, Xuemin (Sherman) Shen Capacity Analysis of Vehicular Communication Networks (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Ning Lu, Xuemin (Sherman) Shen
R1,603 Discovery Miles 16 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This SpringerBrief focuses on the network capacity analysis of VANETs, a key topic as fundamental guidance on design and deployment of VANETs is very limited. Moreover, unique characteristics of VANETs impose distinguished challenges on such an investigation. This SpringerBrief first introduces capacity scaling laws for wireless networks and briefly reviews the prior arts in deriving the capacity of VANETs. It then studies the unicast capacity considering the socialized mobility model of VANETs. With vehicles communicating based on a two-hop relaying scheme, the unicast capacity bound is derived and can be applied to predict the throughput of real-world scenarios of VANETs. The downlink capacity of VANETs is also investigated in which access infrastructure is deployed to provide pervasive Internet access to vehicles. Different alternatives of wireless access infrastructure are considered. A lower bound of downlink capacity is derived for each type of access infrastructure. The last section of this book presents a case study based on a perfect city grid to examine the capacity-cost trade-offs of different deployments since the deployment costs of different access infrastructure are highly variable.

Hillslope Hydrology and Stability (Hardcover, New): Ning Lu, Jonathan W. Godt Hillslope Hydrology and Stability (Hardcover, New)
Ning Lu, Jonathan W. Godt
R2,302 Discovery Miles 23 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Landslides are caused by a failure of the mechanical balance within hillslopes. This balance is governed by two coupled physical processes: hydrological or subsurface flow and stress. The stabilizing strength of hillslope materials depends on effective stress, which is diminished by rainfall. This book presents a cutting-edge quantitative approach to understanding hydro-mechanical processes across variably saturated hillslope environments and to the study and prediction of rainfall-induced landslides. Topics covered include historic synthesis of hillslope geomorphology and hydrology, total and effective stress distributions, critical reviews of shear strength of hillslope materials and different bases for stability analysis. Exercises and homework problems are provided for students to engage with the theory in practice. This is an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers in hydrology, geomorphology, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering and geomechanics and for professionals in the fields of civil and environmental engineering and natural hazard analysis.

Yin-Yang Code - A Introduction to I-Ching (Paperback): Ph.D Ning Lu Yin-Yang Code - A Introduction to I-Ching (Paperback)

I-Ching ( ), a.k.a. The Book of Change, a Chinese literary classic, is one of the oldest books known as talking magically about fortune from drawing lines so called Yang and Yin. A great number of books about I-Ching have been published in many languages, mostly in Chinese, and significantly in English, and always confined by the original I-Ching's literal interpretation treated this book more like a rare relic than a scientific treatise and wrapped with immense archaeological studies on both detailed historic chronicles and meticulous original textual understanding. As result, foremost logic elegance of I-Ching is hardly touched and never explored.

This book, for the first time, will introduce you from a brand new angle by revealing I-Ching as a beautiful mathematical model followed by simple and elegant logic deductions, like a book showing the secrets of magic tricks performed by magicians.
