understanding of wireless sensor networks from a systems
perspective. The book describes and categorizes the technological
trends, leading applications, state-of-the-art platform
developments, future trends, and challenges of sensor networks. You
find critical coverage of network protocols and mechanisms for node
localization, time synchronization, media access control, topology
creation and management, routing, transport, storage, collaborative
signal processing, security and fault tolerance, and node
deployment in large-scale sensor networks.
The story of lust, black magic, kidnapping and murder that led to
the downfall of one of India's most brilliant entrepreneurs When P.
Rajagopal, founder of the famous Saravana Bhavan restaurant chain,
was arrested for murder, it sent shock waves throughout the
country. A gripping true-crime thriller, this is the first full
story of the meteoric rise and dramatic fall of the brilliant
entrepreneur, already married to two women, whose lust for a third
woman led him to plan a cold-blooded killing. A riveting
page-turner, Murder on the Menu follows the trail of the murder
plot over eight districts of Tamil Nadu. It describes the courtroom
dramas that took place as the case dragged on for eighteen long
years even as Rajagopal's empire continued to grow and prosper, and
tracks his life from his humble beginnings in a sleepy village to
his shocking end just days after the Supreme Court upheld his life
sentence for murder.
This thesis presents significant new observations of nuclear
wobbling, and thus expands our understanding of nuclear triaxiality
and its prevalence in the nuclear chart. Triaxial nuclear shapes
are a very rare phenomena and their experimental identification
often relies on two unique signatures - nuclear wobbling motion and
chiral rotation. While nuclear chirality is a well-studied
phenomenon, experimental observations of wobbling nuclei are rather
limited. With the identification of 135Pr and 187Au as wobblers,
this work establishes triaxiality to be a general phenomenon
present in different regions of the nuclear chart, irrespective of
any particular spin or deformation. A major focus of this work is
the detailed investigation of the different kinds of wobbling
modes. Depending on the geometry of the nuclear system, wobbling
can be classified into two types - longitudinal and transverse.
This work has, for the first time, reported evidence of the
possible coexistence of both forms of wobbling in a single nucleus.
Another important result reported in this work is the very first
observation of co-existing chiral and wobbling modes in the 135Pr
nucleus. This thesis details the experimental methods that led to
this breakthrough, along with pertinent theoretical
interpretations.
This book provides cutting edge information on safe motherhood in a
global context. The chapters focus on research, program development
and implementation, and policy dealing with various aspects of
pregnancy, labor and delivery. Safe motherhood is a critical issue
since healthy, safe motherhood is the prerequisite for a healthy,
productive society. Writing about the situation in their countries,
the authors are from Eastern Europe, America, Asia and Africa and
are academic scholars and health practitioners. The book is
multidisciplinary with scholars from sociology, gender studies,
economics, social policy, social geography, population management
and political science. Topics include lactation policy and
misunderstandings of lactations in African countries and in the
United States; postnatal stress disorder that is either
understudied or not considered as a problem in many developing
countries; potential causes of a decline of maternal health in
democratizing states; the effect of geographical environment on
reproductive health; and revelation of mysteries of consequences of
pre-birth pain in the early life of children. Case studies provide
examples of successful model programs. Solutions offered are based
on utilizing available resources and technology in ways that
maximize education and training of local health professionals and
family members. This book was published as a special issue of
Marriage and Family Review.

The Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 is considered to have
been one of the worst natural disasters in history, affecting
twelve countries, from Indonesia to Somalia. 175,000 people are
believed to have lost their lives, almost 50,000 were registered as
missing and 1.7 million people were displaced. As well as this
horrendous toll on human life, the tsunami destroyed property worth
billions of dollars and ruined many local economies. Based on their
experience and analysis of this tsunami, the authors have developed
methodologies for predicting and preparing for tsunamis. A basis is
provided for a cost-effective warning and preparedness strategy,
drawing on the example of existing systems used in earthquake
disaster management and tidal wave warning, from genesis to impact.
The book comprehensively addresses the fundamentals of tsunami
science, identifying potential areas where tsunamis might be
generated, predicting the anticipated course of tsunamis and
considering how the geophysical, ecological and socioeconomic
location of a community may determine the severity of tsunami
damage. The authors suggest how precursors can be used to enhance
the advance warning time, how tsunamis can be detected at the time
of their occurrence, and the manner in which warnings should be
communicated to the populations likely to be affected. Finally,
improvement in eco-sociological resilience through the application
of dual-use technologies is identified as a pivotal aid in allowing
coastal communities to be better prepared. The book will be of
interest to a global audience of professionals and academics active
in seismology, ocean science, meteorology, coastal management,
earthquake engineering and disaster management.
The Moonballer is the first ever book written by an Indian female
tennis player. From a modest background with no sponsors and a
self-trained father as her tennis coach, she became India's no. 1
at 14 years of age. She was the first Indian woman ever to win a
round at a Grand Slam (Australian Open 1998) and became the first
mother to play for India at the 2010 Commonwealth and Asian Games.
This memoir is refreshingly unique as it keeps tennis as the crux,
but weaves in many intricate threads that pertain to women,
society, travel, safety and money. Nirupama was the no. 1 woman
player for India for over a decade. At a time when professional
tennis for women was unheard of in India, she embarked on a journey
with sheer will, determination and talent. She was one of the very
few people who played all the top events including Wimbledon as a
junior, qualifier, main draw player and a commentator for ESPN/Star
Sports.
The book purports to be a snapshot of socio-economic strata of the
street children of Calcutta metropolis, drawing strength from a
field study on them and also have studied the level of pollution
particularly of lead, caused due to the exposure to car exhausts.
These street children collect solid wastes of different kinds from
the dustbins and other dumping places. The studies reveal that the
children are the common victims of diseases like fever, skin,
jaundice and malaria. The survey reveals that most of the
inhabitants of the street have migrated from the suburbs of
Calcutta and Bihar and have been living on the street for last five
years or more. To provide opportunities to the street children to
lead a normal life can be made possible only by bringing social
awareness among the general public towards their responsibilities.

A story of the Soil is a collection of over forty classic Punjabi
short stories. Combining a rich oral tradition of kissas with
tropes from Western literature, Punjabi short-story writers have
developed their own unique way of portraying love, longing, ecstasy
and malice. Spanning a century, these stories talk of life in the
village and the town. There are haunting tales about Partition like
‘A Matter of Faith’ by Gulzar Singh Sandhu where a horrible
tragedy is viewed through the eyes of a child. Along with sensitive
accounts of life from across the border in Pakistan are tales by
the Dalits who until recently had been rendered voiceless. Amrita
Pritam’s ‘The Vault’, a metaphor for a barren womb, explores
the identity of a Punjabi woman while stories like Surjit Birdi’s
‘Flies’ reveals the concerns faced by the Punjabi diaspora.
Translated and edited by Nirupama Dutt, these carefully selected
stories reflect every aspect of life in the land of five rivers.
