This book explores opportunities and limitations with regard to
transferring knowledge and tools from the corporate world to manage
monasteries or other types of religious institutions. To do so, the
contributing authors analyze both the ideological and practical
implications of employing modern organizational theory in the
context of religious institutions, and seek to strike a balance
between preserving traditions and promoting modernization. In this
regard, they draw on experience gained in the course of
long-standing collaborations between religious institutions, such
as monasteries, and business and management schools.
To the seven titles traditionally recognized as Notker's shorter
works ("De partibus logicae," "De syllogismis," "De definitione,"
"De arte rhetorica," "Computus," "De musica," and his letter to the
Bishop Hugo of Sitten), the volume adds three texts, all new to the
Notkerian canon - the St. Gall tractate ("Incipit quomodo septem
circumstantiae rerum in legendo ordinandae sint"), "Distributio
omnium specierum nominis inter cathegorias Aristotelis," and "De
dialectica." The manuscripts of the texts have been closely
followed in this diplomatic edition. Several codices have been
identified and incorporated for the first time. A companion volume,
largely Latin sources, will be published later.

Stoff anregen."

Einhard's Life of Charlemagne is an absorbing chronicle of one of
the most powerful and dynamic of all medieval rulers, written by a
close friend and adviser. In elegant prose it describes
Charlemagne's personal life, details his achievements in reviving
learning and the arts, recounts his military successes and depicts
one of the defining moments in European history: Charlemagne's
coronation as emperor in Rome on Christmas Day 800AD. By contrast,
Notker's account, written some decades after Charlemagne's death,
is a collection of anecdotes rather than a presentation of
historical facts.

"Nothing in this world has eternal value. Use your time and don't
waste it..." "Time is for most of us a luxury good." Making time
for yourself and giving time to others is a source of joy that
enriches our lives. The quiet time we devote to prayer or
meditation gives us strength to master our lives and enhances our
spirituality.
