Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions of short stories, novellas and essays from the world's greatest writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith. O. Henry is one of the most popular American writers of the twentieth century and a true master of the short story. This selection of tales ranges from Christmas in New York to the cattle-lands of Texas, taking in con men, clerks, shop assistants, tramps and tricksters. They all highlight O. Henry's comic eye, his gift for evoking speech and setting, and his unique approach to life's quirks of fate. 'His stories are perfectly executed mini-classics' Washington Post
First published in 1905, O. Henry's masterpiece, The Gift of the Magi, is a moving short story that highlights the plight of the poor at Christmastime. Desperately in love but destitute, Della and Jim try to find ways to drum up the cash for presents for one another, but in the end find they have sacrificed too much along the way. An ode to love and a warning against the consequences of capitalism, The Gift of the Magi has stood the test of time and has sadly never been more relevant. Part of Renard's successful Christmas Card Classics series, 25% of the RRP of each book sold goes to the Three Peas, a small charity supporting refugees.
With a new Introduction by Professor Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D. This selection of a hundred of O. Henry's succinct tales displays the range, humour and humanity of a perennially popular short-story writer. Here Henry gives a richly colourful and exuberantly entertaining panorama of social life, ranging from thieves to tycoons, from the streets of New York to the prairies of Texas. These stories are famed for their 'trick endings' or 'twists in the tail': repeatedly the plot twirls adroitly, compounding ironies. Indeed, O. Henry's cunning plots surpass those of the ingenious rogues he creates. His style is genial, lively and witty, displaying a virtuoso's command of language and allusion. This great collection offers delights for the mind, imagination and emotions.
O. Henry's classic tale of the wisest gifts of Christmas, brought
to life by P.J. Lynch's extraordinary art, is itself a gift to
share and treasure.
Offering the most comprehensive study of southern Jordan, this illuminating account presents detailed data from over a hundred archaeological sites stretching from the Lower Paleotlithic to the Chalcolithic periods. The author uses archaeological and paleoenvironmental evidence to reconstruct synchronic and evolutionary aspects of the cultural ecology of the prehistoric inhabitants of southern Jordan. This study exemplifies that cultural historic and processual approaches are integral to examining prehistoric cultural ecology. Numerous artifact illustrations as well as tables and appendixes containing primary data are included.
One dollar and eight-seven cents is all the money Della has in the world to buy her beloved husband a Christmas present. She has nothing to sell except her only treasure--her long, beautiful brown hair. Set in New York at the turn of the twentieth century, this classic piece of American literature tells the story of a young couple and the sacrifices each must make to buy the other a gift. Beautiful, delicate watercolors by award-winning illustrator Lisbeth Zwerger add new poignancy and charm to this simple tale about the rewards of unselfish love.
O. Henry's stories are very famous. He writes about New York, Texas, Oklahoma. Money and love are often problems. But how is a story going to finish? You never know. Readers always remember his stories.
The Gentle Grafter (1907) is a collection of fourteen short stories by American writer O. Henry. Inspired by his experiences as a fugitive and prisoner, these tales follow the escapades of two professional con artists whose humor and storytelling ability illuminate the nature of wealth and crime in early twentieth century America. In “Modern Rural Sports,” con-man Jeff Peters recalls a job in a rural Western town where, in need of money, he devised a plan with his friend Andy Tucker to steal from a humble farmer. When he shows up to the man’s farm, however, Jeff is surprised to find a well-dressed, well-mannered gentleman who lives in an impressive home with modern amenities. As he attempts his con, Jeff is rebuffed and ignored by a man too busy with gambling, stocks, and purchasing to entertain his unwanted company. Defeated, he returns to Andy, who comes up with a method of his own. “Conscience in Art” follows these characters to Pittsburgh, where they hope to trick one of the city’s newly made millionaires. Andy befriends a wealthy art collector, who shows him a rare carving and explains there were only two of them made. Seeing his chance, he convinces Jeff, who believes they can only steal if they give something in return, that he has found the carving’s replica, and sends his partner to sell it to the collector. The Gentle Grafter is a collection of interconnected short stories that deal humorously with themes of greed, wealth, and deceit. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of O. Henry’s The Gentle Grafter is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Artifacts linked to projectile technologies traditionally have provided the foundations for time-space systematics and cultural-historic frameworks in archaeological research having to do with foragers. With the shift in archae ological research objectives to processual interpretations, projectile technolo gies continue to receive marked attention, but with an emphasis on the implications of variability in such areas as design, function, and material as they relate to the broader questions of human adaptation. The reason that this particular domain of foraging technology persists as an important focus of research, I think, comes in three parts. A projectile technology was a crucial part of most foragers' strategies for survival, it was functionally spe cific, and it generally was fabricated from durable materials likely to be detected archaeologically. Being fundamental to meat acquisition and the principal source of calo ries, projectile technologies were typically afforded greater time-investment, formal modification, and elaboration of attributes than others. Moreover, such technologies tend to display greater standardization because of con straints on size, morphology, and weight that are inherent to the delivery system. The elaboration of attributes and standardization of form gives pro jectile technologies time-and space-sensitivity that is greater than most other foraging technologies. And such sensitivity is immensely valuable in archae ological research.

"Heartwarming stories that recall Christmases past:
The Voice of the City (1908) is a collection of twenty-five short stories by American writer O. Henry. Inspired by his experiences as a fugitive and prisoner, these stories address themes of poverty and city life with humor and abundant empathy. Its focus on the regular, working class people of New York City makes The Voice of the City a sequel of sorts to Henry's The Four Million (1906), perhaps his most important collection. In "The Voice of the City," a determined reporter takes to the streets in search of the authentic New York. With an abundance of wit and without social grace, he attempts to interview a young woman sitting on her stoop, a busy bartender, and a corrupt policeman, asking each for their opinion on how the city speaks to them. Despite his efforts, however, he discovers that, for the most part, the city best speaks for itself. "The Complete Life of John Hopkins" follows a day in the life of its title character. In the middle of a conversation with his wife, he decides to step out of his modest flat in search of a cheap cigar. When a fight with a shop owner and a policeman somehow leads him to the home of a wealthy aristocrat, he finds enough excitement to last him a lifetime. In "A Lickpenny Lover," a young shop girl agrees to go on a date with a patron of her department store glove counter who promises her comfort and wealth. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of O. Henry's The Voice of the City is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.
Whirligigs (1910) is a collection of short stories by American writer O. Henry. Inspired by his experiences as a fugitive and in prison, these stories address themes of poverty and provincial life with humor and abundant empathy. “The Ransom of Red Chief,” the most notable of the collection’s twenty-four stories, is considered one of Henry’s finest works and has been adapted numerous times for television and film. “The Ransom of Red Chief” follows two petty criminals named Bill and Sam, who devise a plan to hold an influential citizen’s son for ransom. They kidnap Johnny Dorset, a ten-year-old boy who soon takes a liking to the pair and gives himself the name “Red Chief.” As Bill and Sam attempt to collect their ransom money, the Red Chief subjects them to tiring games and pranks, causing the two criminals to regret their hasty decision. In “The Whirligig of Life,” a story set in a frontier settlement near the Cumberland Mountains, a Justice of the Peace officiates a divorce between two quarreling settlers. He charges them five dollars for the ceremony, but when the husband realizes he has no money left for alimony, the judge looks for ways to hold onto his hard-earned wages. Whirligigs is a collection of humorous stories by O. Henry, an icon of short story writing. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of O. Henry’s Whirligigs is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers. |
