In "Global Environmental Challenges," a collection of experts examines globalization's multiple effects on the environments of countries in the Global South, and how they are addressed both domestically and internationally. As the process of globalization continues to unfold, several questions arise: What new environmental challenges has globalization brought to countries in the Global South? Has the international environmental agenda had an effect on the politics and policy of these countries? And finally, to what extent have international civil society actors influenced environmental management? Contributors here address these central questions by presenting eleven case studies from the Global South. In addressing these questions, "Global Environmental Challenges "examines the complex relationship between environmental management, development, and globalization.

This book investigates the complexities of Canadian environmental policy. The text is split into three sections: the political context in which decisions are made; issue areas in need of engagement; and perspectives on the achievement of sustainable development, which colour the Canadian conceptual landscape.

The first section outlines the state of the Canadian environment, the actors and institutions involved in environmental policy formation (and a detailed history of Environment Canada), and the international context of modern decision-making. The second section is issue-specific, including chapters on environmental law, risk management and environmental impact assessment, international treaties and conventions involving Canada, and an overall assessment of Canadian policy. The final section deals with values and theories, from gender issues to environmental ethics. In our drive to improve human standards of living, we have paradoxically paid scant attention to the need for clean air and water; the impact of acid rain on agriculture, lakes and rivers; the effect of pollutants on the ozone layer; the safe disposal of hazardous wastes, and the relationship between population growth and the environment. It seems that every time governments are faced with an apparent choice between economic development and the protection of the environment, priority is always given to the former. Short-term plans -- dictated by canons of political survival and expediency -- always seem to take precedence over long-term strategies, with politicians and decision-makers deftly relegating environmental concerns to the realm of rhetoric.
