Modern Fluid Dynamics for Physics and Astrophysics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Oded Regev, Orkan M. Umurhan, Philip A. Yecko Modern Fluid Dynamics for Physics and Astrophysics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Oded Regev, Orkan M. Umurhan, Philip A. Yecko
R3,019 Discovery Miles 30 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book grew out of the need to provide students with a solid introduction to modern fluid dynamics. It offers a broad grounding in the underlying principles and techniques used, with some emphasis on applications in astrophysics and planetary science. The book comprehensively covers recent developments, methods and techniques, including, for example, new ideas on transitions to turbulence (via transiently growing stable linear modes), new approaches to turbulence (which remains the enigma of fluid dynamics), and the use of asymptotic approximation methods, which can give analytical or semi-analytical results and complement fully numerical treatments. The authors also briefly discuss some important considerations to be taken into account when developing a numerical code for computer simulation of fluid flows. Although the text is populated throughout with examples and problems from the field of astrophysics and planetary science, the text is eminently suitable as a general introduction to fluid dynamics. It is assumed that the readers are mathematically equipped with a reasonable knowledge in analysis, including basics of ordinary and partial differential equations and a good command of vector calculus and linear algebra. Each chapter concludes with bibliographical notes in which the authors briefly discuss the chapter's essential literature and give recommendations for further, deeper reading. Included in each chapter are a number of problems, some of them relevant to astrophysics and planetary science. The book is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, but will also prove a valuable source of reference for established researchers.

Chaos and Complexity in Astrophysics (Paperback): Oded Regev Chaos and Complexity in Astrophysics (Paperback)
Oded Regev
R2,011 Discovery Miles 20 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The discipline of nonlinear dynamics has developed explosively in all areas of physics. This comprehensive primer summarizes the main developments in the mathematical theory of dynamical systems, chaos, pattern formation and complexity. An introduction to mathematical concepts and techniques is given in the first part of the book, before being applied to stellar, interstellar, galactic and large scale complex phenomena in the Universe. Regev demonstrates the possible application of ideas including strange attractors, Poincare sections, fractals, bifurcations, and complex spatial patterns, to specific astrophysical problems. This self-contained text will appeal to a broad audience of astrophysicists and astronomers who wish to understand and apply modern dynamical approaches to the problems they are working on. It provides researchers and graduate students with the investigative tools they need to fully explore chaotic and complex phenomena.

Physics with Answers - 500 Problems and Solutions (Hardcover): Andrew R. King, Oded Regev Physics with Answers - 500 Problems and Solutions (Hardcover)
Andrew R. King, Oded Regev
R3,174 Discovery Miles 31 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Physics with Answers contains 500 problems covering the full range of introductory physics and its applications to many other subjects, along with clear, step-by-step solutions to each problem. No calculus is required. Students often have difficulty in solving practical problems after a subject is introduced in class. This book bridges that gap - it contains every type of problem likely to be encountered at this level, so by attempting these exercises and learning from the solutions, students will gain confidence in solving class problems and improve their grasp of physics. The book is split into two parts. The first contains the problems, together with useful summaries of the main results needed for solving them. The second part gives full solutions to each problem, often accompanied by thoughtful comments. Subjects covered include statics, Newton's Laws, circular motion, gravitation, electricity and magnetism, electric circuits, liquids and gases, heat and thermodynamics, light and waves, atomic physics, and relativity. The problems are drawn from many fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, medicine, and architecture.

Asymptotic Approximation Methods in Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics (Paperback): Oded Regev, Orkan M. Umurhan Asymptotic Approximation Methods in Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics (Paperback)
Oded Regev, Orkan M. Umurhan
R1,176 Discovery Miles 11 760 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The mathematical background to the topic of asymptotic approximation methods for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations is given first. These methods are then applied to several examples of problems from astrophysical fluid (and magneto-fluid) dynamics. An entire chapter is devoted to each topic and among them are - accretion disk boundary layers, fronts in thermally bistable interstellar medium; ideas from geophysics (shallow water theory) applied to modeling accretion disks; the discovery of transient perturbation growth in accretion disks, a growth than may reasonably give rise to secondary instabilities which, in turn, can be instrumental in driving angular momentum transport in these objects. Finally a critical nonlinear analysis of the magnetic Taylor-Couette-flow is given. It is found that for the latter, the magneto-rotational instability, whose importance for driving accretion disk turbulence had been considered paramount, actually saturates at an amplitude that goes with the magnetic Prandtl number, a fact that would imply that this instability, per- se, cannot cause sufficient angular momentum transport to induce accretion.
