These seventy-five works are the harvest of seventeen years of exploration from our office in San Francisco. With this admired city as backdrop, we search for ways to produce fitting contemporary architecture in its highly conservative terrain. These local efforts have provided opportunities to also work nationally. The projects describe allied explorations of Outsides and Insides, Places and Programs, Contexts and Contents. Outsides are about building the evolving city with continuity. More than 80% of the fabric of cities is housing, so urban grain is predominantly composed of dwellings, and multifamily housing has become a focus of our work where we have explored ways to be both contextual and contemporary simultaneously. Insides are about blankness, emptiness to provide indeterminate shelter which frees occupants to inhabit space at their will.
Screening Minors in Latin American Cinema is the first volume to delve into the construction of children's subjectivity and agency in Latin American film, and addresses such questions as: How and to what extent do films express the point of view of the child? How do plots and film practices represent children s subjectivity and agency? Childhood studies has demonstrated the importance of examining the lives of children. Building on those insights, together with current research from film studies and Latin American cultural studies, the essays in this volume analyze the development of agency and voices of minors in contemporary Latin American film. The theoretical perspectives used gender studies, psychoanalytic and postcolonial theory, film studies, play and performance studies, and emotion studies, among others take into account innovative approaches to filmic techniques as they explore the varied representations of children."
This book explores the traces of the passage of time on the protracted and intractable conflict of Western Sahara. The authors offer a multilevel analysis of recent developments from the global to the local scenes, including the collapse of the architecture of the UN-led conflict resolution process, the advent of the War on Terror to the the Sahara-Sahel area and the impact of the 'Arab Spring' and growing regional security instability. Special attention is devoted to changes in the Western Sahara territory annexed by Morocco and the Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria. Morocco has adapted its governance and public policies to profound socio-demographic transformations in the territory under its control and has attempted to obtain international recognition for this annexation by proposing an Autonomy Plan. The Polisario Front and Sahrawi nationalists have shifted their strategy and pushed the centre of gravity of the conflict back inwards by focusing on pro-independence activism inside the disputed territory.
This book contains a compilation of the work of Perkins & Will Miami since itâs inception in 1996. Drawing from a legacy of nearly a century of the fabled Chicago architectural Firm, the story of the Miami Studio is one of a search for a regional and critical modernist language unique to its time and place. Starting as a five person office, the studio has grown to a team of 70 architects, interior designers, and landscape professionals who have come together with a single vision of meaning and purpose. The work ranges from one of the most visionary Corporate Headquarters in the country, to a Hospital in Ghana; from the most important new Public Park in Florida to the largest Womenâs University in the Middle East; from an Innovation Center in Rio de Janeiro, to an Office Building in Wynwood.
Artron is the foremost printing enterprise in China. As the core project of Artronâs printing culture industry, the Artron art website is actively setting up to create archives for artists. Moreover, since the site is at the periphery of the city, the art center will need to be conceived with a one-stop multi-service printing facility and cultural center. The site of Shenzhenâs Artron Art Center is located on the city edge, surrounded by three highways. In order to keep away from the noisy and chaotic environment, the building is idealized to be a landmark to define this area. Since the main view of this building will come from the three adjacent highways, the building shape should be continuous and integrated with the large-scale urban infrastructure to form a dialogue between the two. Taking into account the volume as a whole, the architects must think about how to digest this huge volume. On the one hand, on the premise of integrity and continuity, the gaps between the different parts of the volumes were created to bring people the comfortable visual impression when walking in this territory.

Uncertainty exists almost everywhere, except in the most idealized situations; it is not only an inevitable and ubiquitous phenomenon, but also a fundamental sci- ti?c principle. Furthermore, uncertainty is an attribute of information and, usually, decision-relevant information is uncertain and/or imprecise, therefore the abilities to handle uncertain information and to reason from incomplete knowledge are c- cial features of intelligent behaviour in complex and dynamic environments. By carefully exploiting our tolerance for imprecision and approximation we can often achieve tractability, robustness, and better descriptions of reality than traditional - ductive methods would allow us to obtain. In conclusion, as we move further into the ageofmachineintelligence, theproblemofreasoningunderuncertainty, in other words, drawing conclusions from partial knowledge, has become a major research theme. Not surprisingly, the rigoroustreatment of uncertaintyrequiressophisticated - chinery, and the present volume is conceived as a contribution to a better und- standing of the foundations of information processing and decision-making in an environment of uncertainty, imprecision and partiality of truth. This volume draws on papers presented at the 2008 Conference on Information Processing and Management of Uncertainty (IPMU), held in Malaga, Spain, or- nized by the University of Mal aga. The conference brought together some of the world's leading experts in the study of uncertainty."
Analysis of variance (ANOVA) models have become widely used tools
and play a fundamental role in much of the application of
statistics today. In particular, ANOVA models involving random
effects have found widespread application to experimental design in
a variety of fields requiring measurements of variance, including
agriculture, biology, animal breeding, applied genetics,
econometrics, quality control, medicine, engineering, and social
sciences. * Systematic treatment of the commonly employed crossed and nested classification models used in analysis of variance designs * Detailed and thorough discussion of certain random effects models not commonly found in texts at the introductory or intermediate level * Numerical examples to analyze data from a wide variety of disciplines * Many worked examples containing computer outputs from standard software packages such as SAS, SPSS, and BMDP for each numerical example * Extensive exercise sets at the end of each chapter * Numerous appendices with background reference concepts, terms, and results * Balanced coverage of theory, methods, and practical applications * Complete citations of important and related works at the end of each chapter, as well as an extensive general bibliography Accessible to readers with only a modest mathematical and statistical background, the work will appeal to a broad audience of students, researchers, and practitioners in the mathematical, life, social, and engineering sciences. It may be used as a textbook in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses, or as a reference for readers interested in the use of random effects models for data analysis.
ANOVA models involving random effects have found widespread application to experimental design in varied fields such as biology, econometrics, and engineering. Volume I of this two-part work is a comprehensive presentation of methods and techniques for point estimation, interval estimation, and hypotheses tests for linear models involving random effects. Volume I examines models with balanced data (orthogonal models); Volume II studies models with unbalanced data (non-orthogonal models). Accessible to readers with a modest mathematical and statistical background, the work will appeal to a broad audience of graduate students, researchers, and practitioners. It can be used as a graduate text or as a self-study reference.
It is, in some circles, called "No-Touch Torture." Yet it brings pain and damage that can last a lifetime. Psychological torture techniques - which have a history of use by U.S. forces globally trailing far into the past beyond Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib - include a variety of methods from mock executions, severe humiliation, and mind-altering drugs, to forced self-induced pain, sensory disorientation including loud music and light control, and exploitation of personal or cultural phobias. It is no accident, for example, that Private Lynndie England was seen in Abu Ghraib pictures, which shocked the world, with Arab prisoners forced naked into a pile or led like dogs by leash. Arabs have strong spiritual beliefs about the humiliation of public nudity, and also have a strong cultural fear of dogs. These techniques are neither surprising nor particular to England if one has fair knowledge of the U.S. history of sanctioned psychological torture techniques, say the experts behind this book. Having reached a joint crescendo of intolerance and horror, scholars from across the nation met in 2006 for a conference on psychological torture and what can be done to stop the practice. They agree with Alberto Mora, the U.S. Navy's general counsel, who fought to stop the Pentagon-sanctioned psychological torture at Guantanamo. "Cruelty disfigures our national character. Where cruelty exists, law does not," Mora said. This book is the joint effort of those scholars, from the University of California Center for the Study of Human Rights in the Americas, to Harvard Medical School, to paint a clear picture of psychological torture, its longterm affects, and spur action to stop the practice. "The distinctlyAmerican form of psychological torture" has four characteristics that make it attractive to the CIA and other supporters, say the authors. It is elusive - lacks the clear signs of physical abuse so eludes detection and complicates investigation, prosecution, or attempts at prohibition. It is shrouded - in scientific patina that makes it appeal to policy makers and avoids the obvious physical brutality unpalatable to the general public. It is adaptable - as shown by searing innovations by the CIA across 40 years. And it is destructive - can cause psychosis and other psychological disorders or, in more severe cases, death. While, in public, U.S. officials spotlight and support legislation that has banned physical torture, far more clandestine political, military, and CIA activities are refining and increasing the use of psychological torture. This book includes a brief history of sanctioned psychological experiments and actions to torture, as well as CIA research outsourced to leading U.S. universities that produced what the authors call "key findings that led to the first real revolution in the cruel science of pain in centuries." Historical information here includes a summary of a decade of mind-control research by the CIA that in 1963 resulted in the KUBARK Counterintelligence Interrogation manual. This volume represents a striking collaboration of distinguished psychologists, psychiatrists, neurobiologists, lawyers, historians, and a semanticist. The book closes with case studies of the psychological torture of Mohammed al-Qahtani, the alleged 20th hijacker in the 9/11 attacks, and of Salim Hamdan, the alleged driver of Osama bin Laden. This work will be absorbing to any readerinterested in human rights, covert politics now and across history, military science, psychology, or psychiatry.
Architectural photography is where Se found his niche and in Seeing Borobudur he turns his expert eye on the worldâs largest Buddhist monument in Central Java, Indonesia. Dating back to the 9th century, the UNESCO World Heritage site features thousands of stunning relief panels and hundreds of statues set within incredible temple architecture. This book offers a unique perspective on these treasures, taking readers on an in-depth exploration of the temple and the different religious stories, myths and depictions of everyday life found in the panels, which are generally considered to be some of the most exquisite of the ancient Buddhist world.
The Routledge Handbook of Latin America and the Environment provides an in-depth and accessible analysis and theorization of environmental issues in the region. It will help readers make connections between Latin American and other regions' perspectives, experiences, and environmental concerns. Latin America has seen an acceleration of environmental degradation due to the expansion of resource extraction and urban areas. This Handbook addresses Latin America not only as object of study, but also as a region with a long and profound history of critical thinking on these themes. Furthermore, the Handbook departs from the environment as a social issue inextricably linked to politics, economy and culture. It will be an invaluable resource for those wanting not only to understand the issues, but also to engage with ideas about environmental politics and social-ecological transformation. The handbook covers a broad range organized in three areas: physical geography, ecology and crucial environmental problems of the region, key theoretical and methodological issues used to understand Latin America's ecosocial contexts, and institutional and grassroots practices related to more just and sustainable worlds. The Handbook will set a research agenda for the near future and provide comprehensive research on most subregions relative to environmental transformations, challenges, struggles and political processes. It stands as a fresh and much needed state of the art introduction for researchers, scholars, post-graduates and academic audiences on Latin American contributions to theorization, empirical research and environmental practices.

The book comprehensively presents modern techniques, timely application, and data modeling.
This volume investigates the contemporary fauna that inhabit the Cuatro Cienegas Basin. Divided into 15 chapters, it addresses and describes their diversity, taxonomic and biogeogaphic affinities, and ecological characteristics. The Cuatro Cienegas Valley is a unique oasis in the south-central region of the State of Coahuila, part of the Sonoran Desert, in Mexico. Several clues, specially derived from the study of the microbiota, suggest a very ancient origin of the valley and its permanence through time. This condition had promoted a high level of endemism and led to unique interactions between the resident species.
This instalment of the Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers Masterpiece Series focuses on Hive Architects' Shibusa Residence on the Big Sarasota Pass in Siesta Key, Florida. In response to the client's brief; for their future home to reflect their simple, uncomplicated lifestyle, the long, narrow lot and zoning requirements, the studio decided to base their project around the Japanese concept of Shibusa: economy of form, line and effort resulting in a refined, timeless tranquility. Featuring critical texts by renowned architectural writers, detailed plans and layouts and comprehensive photographic documentation, this monograph shows how the L-shaped structure made up of a pair of rectilinear pavilions seems to float over the tropical landscape, offering excellent functionality for the public and private programs, which include a main and guest pavilion, tropical garden and lap pool, and, crucially, an uninterrupted stream of views of the Big Sarasota Pass and/or Bayou Louise throughout the property.
