Ukraine - The Search for a National Identity (Paperback): Sharon L. Wolchik, Volodymyr Zviglyanich Ukraine - The Search for a National Identity (Paperback)

R1,564 Discovery Miles 15 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This comprehensive book focuses on the challenges facing Ukraine as a newly emerged state after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Like all countries with no recent history of independence, Ukraine had to invent or recreate effective political institutions, reintroduce a market economy, and reorient its foreign policy. These tasks were impossible to accomplish without resolving the question of national identity. In this balanced and clear-eyed assessment, a team of U.S. and Ukrainian specialists explores the external and internal dimensions of national identity and statehood, providing a wealth of information previously unavailable to Western scholars. Arguing that the search for national identity is a multidimensional process, the authors show that it reflects the realities of the dawning twenty-first century. Paradoxically, this quest must cope with the both the weakening of state boundaries caused by globalization and the strengthening of the national model as new countries emerge from the disintegration of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. After providing the historical context of Ukraine s international debut, the book analyzes the complexities of constructing a national identity. The authors explore questions of ethnic relations and regionalism, the development of political values and attitudes, mass-elite relations, the cultural background of economic strategies, gender issues, and the threat of organized crime to emergent civil society."

The Palgrave Handbook of Comparative Economics (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Elodie Douarin, Oleh Havrylyshyn The Palgrave Handbook of Comparative Economics (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Elodie Douarin, Oleh Havrylyshyn
R8,022 Discovery Miles 80 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book aims to define comparative economics and to illustrate the breadth and depth of its contribution. It starts with an historiography of the field, arguing for a continued legacy of comparative economic systems, which compared socialism and capitalism, a field which some argued should have been replaced by institutional economics after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The process of transition to market capitalism is reviewed, and itself exemplifies a new combination of comparative analysis with a focus on institutional development. Going beyond, chapters broadening the application of comparative analysis and applying it to new issues and approaches, including the role and definition of institutions, subjective wellbeing, inequality, populism, demography, and novel methodologies. Overall, comparative economics has evolved in the past 30 years, and remains a powerful approach for analyzing important issues.

Oleh Havrylyshyn
R3,473 Discovery Miles 34 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Marking the 25th anniversary of Ukraine as a sovereign nation, this book traces its economic transformation since 1991. Post-communist transition has been a highlight of recent history, and Ukraine stands out as one of its most interesting and puzzling cases. Havrylyshyn offers the first comprehensive treatise on the entire period, providing a thorough description of the slow evolution of economic reforms, exploring how and why performance in this regard fell far behind the leaders in transition. Testing several conventional hypotheses, the author argues that while Russian imperialism may form part of the explanation, the self-serving interests of domestic elites and new oligarchs may be even more important. Radically revising the traditional argument that reforms were delayed to allow nation building, this book contends that it was due more to the interests of the non-lustrated elite, who needed time to become the new capitalists.

Nearly thirty years after the fall of the Soviet Union, debates over paths to market liberalization have produced numerous studies across the social sciences. This groundbreaking work from Oleh Havrylyshyn offers a new perspective. Havrylyshyn, a former official in the post-independence Ukrainian government, provides a unique, primary source account of the people and problems at the heart of economic transitions. Grounded in three decades of data, along with experiential research gleaned from nearly thirty countries, this book contains the most up-to-date assessment of economic transitions in post-communist regions. It critically examines questions of gradual versus radical reforms, the relationship between democracy and market liberalization, and how history, individual personalities, and foreign influence determined political choices. Thorough research and accessible style make this work a valuable resource for students and specialists of economics, political science, and history as well as readers generally interested in international studies, government, and business.

This book contains the main results of INDEUNIS, which is an international research project coordinated by the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies and financed by the European Commission under its Sixth Framework Programme. Researchers from Austria, Poland, Hungary, Estonia, Finland, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine have jointly investigated recent experiences with economic transition, restructuring, and integration. There is a set of non-exclusive policy options for the NIS (Newly Independent States) which include being able to proceed with the liberalization and institutional development process, to provide more government budget for renewing and expanding infrastructure, to establish an Industrial Policy to promote priority sectors, and to use tariff and other protection for temporary support to infant-industries. The bottom line on the experience of structural change and policy implications for the future is that the NMS (New EU Member States) provide an object lesson for the NIS. The major component of NMS' success has been the steady progress in market reforms, including liberalization, all with a small lag in institutional development. The best recommendation for the NIS is to follow the same path, despite the problems early delay has caused.
