This interdisciplinary collection explores four distinct
perspectives about the mask, as object of use for protection,
identity, and disguise. In part I, contributors address human
identities within collective social performance, with chapters on
performativity and the far right and masked identities in political
resistance and communication. Part II focuses on the mask as a
signifying object with strong representational challenges,
exploring representations in festivals, literature, and film. Part
III investigates the ambiguous use of the mask as a protective and
concealing element, delving into visual culture and digital social
media contexts. Finally, Part VI draws on the work of Levinas and
Deleuze to investigate a philosophical view of the mask that
addresses memory and ethics within intersubjective relationships.
Questioning the contemporary world, using communication, sociology,
visual culture, and philosophical theory, the volume provides a
pedagogical and formative perspective on the mask.
This book contributes to the understanding of the counter-terrorism
(CT) policy of the European Union (EU) by offering a set of
analyses focusing on its external dimension. Whilst calling for the
combination of internal and external policies as well as
cooperation with third countries and international institutions,
the external dimension of EUCT challenges previous assumptions on
the functioning of the EU and offers new testing ground for the
latest theoretical and methodological approaches. This volume
provides the first systematic assessment of the external dimension
of EUCT. It covers transatlantic counter-terrorism cooperation, the
interaction between EU institutions and policies, theoretical
debates on EU actorness in counter-terrorism and the role of
judicial institutions in international counter-terrorism.
Furthermore, it draws attention to the need for engaging in new
discussions over the post-Lisbon Treaty Common Foreign and Security
Policy (CFSP), the international fight against terrorism, and the
way international actors cooperate and compete on the security
arena. It will be of interest for both academics and practitioners
working on EU foreign policy, transatlantic relations and
international counter-terrorism. It will also be of interest for
students and journalists specialized on European and international
affairs. This book was published as a special issue of European
Security.
In the context of the debate on the future of Europe, this book
makes the case for a new approach to structural transformation,
growth and cohesion in the EU. It explores both the opportunities
and challenges from globalisation and technological change, the
widening differences in productivity between leading and lagging
regions, and the need for a new policy framework capable of
delivering inclusive growth. The Regional Studies Association's
Policy Impact Books form a series of punchy, policy facing books
addressing issues of contemporary concern. There is a consistent
focus on the impact of policy research both in terms of its reach
to policy, academic and practitioner communities and also in its
significance, to show how evidence can inform policy change within
regional and urban studies.
Increase in life expectancy is arguably the most remarkable
by-product of modern economic growth. In the last 30 years we have
gained roughly 2.5 years of longevity every decade, both in Europe
and the United States. Successfully managing aging and longevity
over the next twenty years is one of the major structural
challenges faced by policy makers in advanced economies,
particularly in health spending, social security administration,
and labor market institutions. This book looks closely into those
challenges and identifies the fundamental issues at both the
macroeconomic and microeconomic level.
The first half of the book studies the macroeconomic relationships
between health spending, technological progress in medical related
sectors, economic growth, and welfare state reforms. In the popular
press, longevity and population ageing are typically perceived as a
tremendous burden. However, with a proper set of reforms, advanced
economies have the option of transforming the enormous challenge
posed by longevity into a long term opportunity to boost aggregate
outcomes. The basic prerequisite of a healthy ageing scenario is a
substantial structural reform in social security and in labor
market institutions.
The second part of the book looks closely into the microeconomic
relationship between population aging and productivity, both at the
individual and at the firm level. There is surprisingly little
research on such key questions. The book contributes to this debate
in two ways. It presents a detailed analysis of the determinants of
productivity, with a focus on both the long-run historical
evolution and the cross sectional changes. It also uses econometric
analysis to look into the determinants of the various dimensions of
individual productivity. The volume concludes that the complex
relationship between population ageing and longevity is not written
in stone, and can be modified by properly designed choices.
