This book summarizes the main methods of experimental stress
analysis and examines their application to various states of stress
of major technical interest, highlighting aspects not always
covered in the classic literature. It is explained how experimental
stress analysis assists in the verification and completion of
analytical and numerical models, the development of
phenomenological theories, the measurement and control of system
parameters under operating conditions, and identification of causes
of failure or malfunction. Cases addressed include measurement of
the state of stress in models, measurement of actual loads on
structures, verification of stress states in circumstances of
complex numerical modeling, assessment of stress-related material
damage, and reliability analysis of artifacts (e.g. prostheses)
that interact with biological systems. The book will serve graduate
students and professionals as a valuable tool for finding solutions
when analytical solutions do not exist.
An absorbing bildungsroman that tells the story of three sisters
amidst France's rapid transformation in the '70s Three sisters were
born into a modest Catholic family in Aix-en-Provence. Sabine, the
eldest, dreams of an artist's life in Paris; Helene, the middle
girl, grows up divided between the bourgeois environment of
Neuilly-sur-Seine and the simple life led by her parents; Mariette,
the youngest, learns the secrets and silences of a dazzling and
crazy world. In 1970, French society is changing. Women have
emancipated themselves whilst men have lost their bearings, and the
three sisters, each in their own way, find ways to live a life of
their own-a strong life, far from the morality, education, and the
religion of their childhood. This family chronicle, which takes us
from the May 1968 protests to the 1981 elections, is as much a
tender and tragic stroll through the 20th century as it is the
chronicle of an era, where consciousnesses are awakening to the
upheaval of the world, and heralding the chaos to come.

Random process analysis (RPA) is used as a mathematical model in
physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, information theory,
economics, environmental science, and many other disciplines. Over
time, it has become more and more important for the provision of
computer code and data sets. This book presents the key concepts,
theory, and computer code written in R, helping readers with
limited initial knowledge of random processes to become confident
in their understanding and application of these principles in their
own research. Consistent with modern trends in university
education, the authors make readers active learners with hands-on
computer experiments in R code directing them through RPA methods
and helping them understand the underlying logic. Each subject is
illustrated with real data collected in experiments performed by
the authors or taken from key literature. As a result, the reader
can promptly apply the analysis to their own data, making this book
an invaluable resource for undergraduate and graduate students, as
well as professionals, in physics, engineering, biophysical and
environmental sciences, economics, and social sciences.

The narrator of this story remembers his childhood during World War
II, first in Milan and then in the countryside, where he was
evacuated along with other children. Schoolhouse lessons, brotherly
complicity, the first bombings, summer camp, his relationship with
his father, and the discovery of love are all recreated in a series
of lively vignettes. The harshness of war and the separation of a
family are juxtaposed with the awakening of senses and the
intuition of pleasures yet to be discovered, but more importantly
to the belief in life and the future.""
