Am Ende des vorigen Jahrhunderts hat die Physiologie des Gesichtssinnes nicht nur durch die Erfindung des Augenspiegels, sondern besonders auch durch die breite Basis der Fortschritte der Photographie einen schnellen Aufschwung erlebt. Eine ahnliche Lage ist in den letzten 30 Jahren auf dem Gebiete der Akustik durch das allgemeine Interesse der Technik an Rundfunk, Schallplatte und Bandtongerat entstanden und ist sowohl der Physiologie des Gehorsinnes, wie auch der Physiologie der Stimme und Sprache zugute gekommen. Und wahrend in unserer Studentenzeit die Physiologie des Gehors noch unter der "Oberschrift "Hortheorien" abgehandelt wurde, hat uns die moderne Elektroakustik nicht nur MeBverfahren, sondern durch die Entdeckung von FORBES, MILLER und Mitarbeitern im Reizfolgestrom ein Untersuchungsobjekt beschert, dessen Ein- bau in die Physiologie des Gehors erlaubte, unser Wissen vom Gehorsinn in den letzten Jahren gewaltig zu fordern. Unsere Kenntnisse an Einzelheiten vom Reiz bis zu den hochsten Zentren gehen jetzt auf dem Gebiet des Gehors iiber das hinaus, was an Entsprechendem auf dem Gebiet des Gesichtssinnes be- kannt ist. 1m englischen Sprachkreis liegt das ausgezeichnete Buch "Hearing" von STEVENS und DAVIS vor, das unter reichlicher Verwendung dieser Erkenntnisse eine ganz neue Sicht der Physiologie des Gehors erlaubt. 1m deutschen Sprach- kreis fehlt aber noch immer eine zusammenfassende Darstellung, so daB wir es dankbar begriiBt haben, durch Herausgeber und Verlag die Moglichkeit zu einer Ausfiillung dieser Liicke erhalten zu haben. Die Physiologie des Gehors erfordert mehr mathematische Unterlagen als andere Teilgebiete der Physiologie.
