Die Enzymologie befindet sich schon seit einigen J ahrzehnten in einer sttirmi- schen Entwicklung; die Anzahl der enzymologischen Experimentalarbeiten steigt von J ahr zu J ahr an. Aber auch ihre Bedeutung fUr die verschiedensten Wissens- zweige nimmt sHindig zu; es ist heutefast unmoglich, bestimmte medizinische oder biologische Teilgebiete ohne die Kenntnis mindestens ihrer Grundlagen zu verstehen. Gerade dieser raschen Entwicklung dtirftedie verhiiltnismaBig geringe Zahl der Darstellungen des Gesamtgebietes der Enzymologie zuzuschreiben sein. So existieren zur Zeit in deutscher Sprache nur zwei kurz gehaltene Einfiihrungen in die Lehre von den Enzymen; dagegen gibt es seit langem keine eingehendere Darstellung. Vor einigen Jahren vor die Aufgabe gestellt, eine ausfUhrlichere Vorlesung tiber Enzyme fUr Chemiestudierende der hoheren Semester an der Wiener Universitat zu halten, konnte ich die Horer fUr ihr Selbststudium nur auf das in vielen Belangen ausgezeichnete Lehrbuch von SUMNER und SOMERS verweisen. Da aber dieses Buch offensichtlich vor allem den Bedtirfnissen des angelsachsischen Lesers angepaBt ist, erschien eine eigene Darstellung nicht liberfltissig.
