This book explains on what basis a nation can claim the status of space power, what are the criteria differentiating a space power from “lesser� space actors, and how their spacepower can be empirically measured and assessed. To this end, it sets forth a comprehensive multidisciplinary framework to enable a dynamic comparison of space actors and of the pathways that lead them in and out of the space powers’ club. Drawing upon a critical review of the existing literature, it conceptualises spacepower as a form of state power based on the complex interplay between the two defining dimensions of stateness, namely the well-studied dimension of capacity and the often neglected yet exceedingly important dimension of autonomy. The book demonstrates that only actors possessing high levels of both autonomy and capacity qualify as space powers. Different levels of either capacity or autonomy produce other types of space actors, including skilled spacefarers, self-reliant spacefarers, primed spacefarers, and emerging space actors. This innovative conceptual framework is complemented by an in-depth comparative assessment that collects and processes a large amount of hard-to-find data on the most active global space actors and aggregates multiple indicators into a compound, non-hierarchical index of space power visualised in the form of a matrix.

He has not departed from the Russian or the world political scene, and the need to understand and come to terms with Putin's Russia has not diminished.

This book analyzes intra-ethnic elections in the United States, in the circumstance of American politicians of Italian descent who ran against each other in the State of New York. This kind of race splits the ethnic group vote and neutralizes the ethnic appeal of both contenders, for neither one can use ancestry as an argument to draw votes away from the opponent. The first part examines the 2010 gubernatorial campaign between Andrew M. Cuomo and Carl P. Paladino, the highest-level intra-Italian electoral contest in contemporary times. The second part addresses the Congressional races between James Lanzetta and Vito Marcantonio in East Harlem in the 1930s, and the 1950 New York City mayoral elections, where the three major candidates-Vincent Impellitteri, Ferdinand Pecora, and Edward Corsi-were all Italian-born. The third part investigates the relationship between social demographics and the success of Italian American politicians in hegemonic districts where intra-Italian elections occur frequently. These studies conclude that the success of American politicians of Italian origin is linked to their capacity to appeal to broader segments of the electorate. Italian signs are numerous in American politics, increasingly so as Italian American politicians demonstrate their ability to provide political representation to society as a whole.

Literary Nonfiction. This book includes essays on the phenomenon of the "guido": its origins and its relationship to the Italian/American community. The writers share their own views on a phenomenon that, in December 2009/January 2010, was filling newspapers and television programs, in reaction to the then new reality show Jersey Shore. The community's "dirty laundry" was finally aired in public, without maintaining the convention of bella figura, as a modern and pluralistic community does and should do.
