Modern Geopolitics of Eastern Mediterranean Hydrocarbons in an Age of Energy Transformation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Ozay... Modern Geopolitics of Eastern Mediterranean Hydrocarbons in an Age of Energy Transformation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Ozay Mehmet, Vedat Yorucu
R2,789 Discovery Miles 27 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an in-depth assessment of the modern geopolitics of hydrocarbon resources in the territorial waters of the Eastern Mediterranean, highlighting the current conflicts and disputes in the maritime territories of Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Turkey. Further, these geopolitical aspects are analyzed within the broader context of the tensions between and competing interests of big powers such as the USA, Russia, and the European Union. To what extent can major powers influence regional actors and guide them toward rational outcomes? To what extent can economic self-interest contain nationalistic impulses? What are the most practical and sustainable ways of promoting win-win scenarios? This book focuses on such questions and presents a number of clear policy guidelines to help the conflict-laden Eastern Mediterranean region gain a more peaceful and sustainable footing for the greater benefit of the peoples living there.

The Southern Energy Corridor: Turkey's Role in European Energy Security (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Vedat Yorucu, Ozay... The Southern Energy Corridor: Turkey's Role in European Energy Security (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Vedat Yorucu, Ozay Mehmet
R3,665 R3,225 Discovery Miles 32 250 Save R440 (12%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book highlights the importance of Turkey in diversifying supplies in future European energy security, focusing in particular on the rapidly emerging southern energy corridor. Turkey, by its location, occupies a key role in this corridor, fed by hydrocarbon supplies from Russian, Caspian, east Mediterranean and Arab sources. The book examines Turkey's role as a transit country (in addition to its own growing domestic energy market) and it utilizes the latest evidence on the geopolitics of various pipelines which convergence on Turkey. The evidence, including maps, strongly favor Turkey as an energy hub within a regional energy model driven by rational behavior and market forces. The book recommends an increasing strategic energy cooperation between the EU and Turkey to maximize mutual interest.

Economic Planning and Social Justice in Developing Countries (Hardcover): Ozay Mehmet Economic Planning and Social Justice in Developing Countries (Hardcover)
Ozay Mehmet
R4,175 Discovery Miles 41 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1978, this book was written at a time when belief was high in Western-guided economic development of the emerging countries. The success of Marshall Plan in war-torn Europe generated a US-led optimism that, with generous inflows of aid and technical assistance, the Third World could be won over in the Cold War. The author's direct experience as a young academic economist in Cyprus, Malaysia, Uganda and Liberia led him to question this general optimism: the reality on the ground in the developing world did not seem to match Western optimism. Theories and blueprints, made in the West, did not fit the requirements of developing countries. Higher production and better income distribution were inseparable twin objectives of developing nations. That meant, production of a higher national output must at the same time promote social justice. Investment must create adequate jobs so that new entrants into rapidly expanding labor force could be gainfully employed. Yet, the dominant (Western) theories of development at the time, in particular the Trickle Down Theory of Growth, prescribed "Growth First, Distribution Later" strategy. Similarly, Import Substitution Industrialization theories were emphasized at the expense of export-led growth. Dualistic Growth theories preached urban-biased, anti-rural development. This book was written as a rebuttal of such faulty theorizing and misguided professional technical assistance and the book's message is no less valid today than in the 1970's.

Small Islands in Maritime Disputes: Greek Turkish Energy Geo-politics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Vedat Yorucu, Ozay Mehmet Small Islands in Maritime Disputes: Greek Turkish Energy Geo-politics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Vedat Yorucu, Ozay Mehmet
R2,792 Discovery Miles 27 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the delicate interconnections between law and economics, especially as regards island entitlements under international maritime law. This is an area in the literature generally overlooked because maritime law has been the domain of legal experts. Maritime boundary disputes are over resources, a vitally important economic subject. Yet, the economics of maritime law has been ignored. Lawyers and legal experts have dominated the field, to the alarming degree of causing needless international conflicts. Our monograph addresses this serious neglect. The methodology would be rational behavior model, one specifically formulated to make the case that dialog and negotiation between these countries is the rational choice leading to win-win outcome in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean territorial waters. Public and private sector actors identified as key decision-makers in all phases of hydrocarbon development and monetization, within an overall win-win framework.

Islamic Identity and Development - Studies of the Islamic Periphery (Paperback): Ozay Mehmet Islamic Identity and Development - Studies of the Islamic Periphery (Paperback)
Ozay Mehmet
R1,331 Discovery Miles 13 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Turkey and Malaysia, two countries on the Islamic periphery, are often not included in discussions of Islamic reassertion and identity. Yet both have been at the forefront of modernization and development, and are exposed to a rising trend of Islamic revival which discloses a deep, psychological identity crisis.

In Islamic Identity and Development, Ozay Mehmet examines this identity crisis in the wider context of the Islamic dilemma of reconciling nationalism with Islam. He sees the Islamic revival primarily as a protest movement, concentrated among urban migrant settlements where uneven post-war growth has upset the traditional Islamic order. He argues that Islamic societies must move towards greater openness and an organic relationship between rulers and ruled. In particular, Mehmet suggests the need for a public policy that is not only responsive to material human needs but which also satisfies the ethical preconditions of the Islamic social contract.

Global Governance, Economy and Law - Waiting for Justice (Hardcover, New): Errol Mendes, Ozay Mehmet Global Governance, Economy and Law - Waiting for Justice (Hardcover, New)
Errol Mendes, Ozay Mehmet
R1,287 Discovery Miles 12 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a critical examination of the most important institutions of global governance in the world today. Drawing on history, political science, law and economics, the authors examine institutions such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and also the global private sector. In a series of comprehensive analyses the inability of these institutions and entities to promote and protect human rights and international peace is revealed.
While examining the failures of the past, the authors enthusiastically propose far reaching reforms, suggesting how these global institutions and their member states can reform themselves to prevent the exploitation of the most vulnerable in the global economy and bridge the gap between the high vision that saw the birth of these institutions and their present day failures. Global Governance, Economy and Law calls for nothing less than a global Marshall Plan, a new global political vision and a new system of international taxation to finance the integration of justice into the world economy.

Ozay Mehmet
R4,313 Discovery Miles 43 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In "Islamic Identity and Development," Ozay Mehmet examines the Islamic revival which is occurring in many developing countries. He places Islamic reassertion and identity in the wider context of the dilemma of reconciling nationalism with Islam. Turkey and Malaysia, two countries on the Islamic periphery, have been both at the forefront of modernization and development, and subjects of an increasing revivalism disclosing a profound identity crisis.
Ozay Mehmet views the Islamic revival primarily as a protest movement, concentrated among urban migrant settlements where uneven postwar growth has upset the traditional Islamic order. Currently, both countries are dealing with serious development and cultural issues. Arguing that Islamic societies must move towards greater openness and an organic relationship between rulers and ruled, Mehmet champions a public policy responsive to human material needs which also satisfies the ethical conditions of the Islamic social contract.
