"Recent Events in the Psychology of Aging" documents the successful
integration of aging into the mainstream of psychology. Leading
psychologists present overviews of the key issues and research
findings on mainstream topics. These include cognitive
neuroscience, visual attention, learning, memory and cognition, as
well as personality and happiness. The intersection of aging
content with mainstream psychology is also prominent in the areas
of emotions, personality, and social psychology as seen in the
chapters on subjective well-being, emotional development,
self-esteem and personality trajectories.
The seven chapters of this book offer information on such topics
as: the seven sins of memory, categorizing the common breakdowns of
memory in everyday life and the special breakdown of sins that
increase with aging; problems with attention and learning; and
offers answers to questions such as do emotions get blunted with
age; do older people focus more on positive feelings; and the age
old question of whether older people are happier than younger
people is given in the chapter on the evolving concept of
subjective well-being and the multifaceted nature of happiness.
Questions about what occurs to one's self-esteem and personality
are also masterfully discussed and the answers may be surprising.
The concluding seventh chapter provides a cultural lens on the
biopsychosocial study of aging.
Phocid (or earless or true) seals are ecologically diverse,
occupying habitats from the tropics to the poles in marine and
freshwater and feeding on anything from tiny zooplankton to other
marine mammals. There are 18 species of phocid seals, the smallest
species (ringed seal) is more than 20 times smaller than the
largest (southern elephant seal), with marked sexual dimorphism
present in some species. This book examines the behavior, ecology,
and physiology that allow phocid seals to inhabit such a wide range
of habitats. The book is composed of 16 chapters written by 37
authors from 8 countries. The book first describes the general
patterns of phocid behavior, followed by descriptions of what is
known about well-studied species. We have taken a holistic
approach, focusing not only on the behaviors themselves but also on
the factors that constrain the expression of behavior and the
proximate mechanisms driving behavior. In many cases, the chapters
represent collaborations between well-established researchers and
early-mid career individuals who bring new perspectives to help
carry the field of phocid behavioral ecology well into the future.
Since its inception in 1991, EUROMAT has been held each year on
behalf of the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS),
and alternates between general and topical prospectives.
This year's theme, Advances in Mechanical Behaviour, Plasticity
and Damage, was proposed by the Societe Francaise de Metallurgie et
de Materiaux (SF2M) to FEMS.
This publication contains a selection of papers presented at the
EUROMAT 2000 Conference, held in Tours, France on 7-9 November
2000. The aim of this Conference was to concentrate mainly on
recent advances made in the investigation of the relationship
between microstructures of materials and their mechanical
behaviour; including, fundamentals, modelling and applications.
Encompassed in the Conference's aim is the nurturing of the
synergistic effect between the theoretical and applied areas in
this field. This was achieved by addressing important basic and
practical aspects of the mechanical behaviour and damage of
materials whilst also providing significant links between various
complementary approaches.
All kinds of materials are covered and topics that were covered
include the mechanics of solid polymers, microstructurs and
micromechanisms, and the collective behavior of defects which looks
at the interaction of multiple defects in a system.
This book provides school and district leaders with 2 important
things: 1) a field tested process and strategies for making the
shift from a print to a digital learning environment; and 2) tools
for implementing that process. By taking advantage of the constant
innovation in the device market and a new generation of open-source
resources, the author will show how to affordably transform print
school systems into ones that leverage the power of one-to-one
computing to become substantially digital and royalty free learning
centers. In addition, he will show educators how to create the
supporting instructional frameworks required for making the
transition to one-to-one pay off for student learning.Divided into
3 sections, the first part of the book makes the case for change by
examining the research and todayAEs educational context. The second
part of the book focuses on the practical strategies needed to get
a one-to-one instructional environment in an era of limited
financial resources, including open source resources, and Bring
Your Own Devices. The final part of the book explores the systemic
changes that need to accompany the implementation of one-to-one in
order for its promise to become a reality, including curriculum,
instruction, assessment, and professional development.
