Intended for use as a text in courses on national security, arms
control, and peace studies, this collection of statements by world
leaders and eminent scholars offers an accurate and comprehensive
guide through the maze of claims and criticisms about "Star Wars,"
the sensationally controversial effort of the Reagan administration
to reorient U.S. nuclear strategy to strategic defense. The
contents include a thorough introduction by the editors and
individual chapters outlining the strategic defense initiative as
originally conceived and subsequently modified by the Reagan
administration; the arguments for and against the plan's strategic
and technical feasibility; and assessments of the harmful and
constructive effects of strategic defense on U.S.-Soviet and
U.S.-allied relations.
Balanced and comprehensive in approach, this text assembles classic
statements on nuclear strategy and arms control made by Soviet and

Balanced and comprehensive in approach, this text assembles classic
statements on nuclear strategy and arms control made by Soviet and
U.S. policymakers, military thinkers, and opinion leaders during
the last forty years. Major Soviet statements, rarely appearing in
translation, reflect the disagreement over whether "victory" or
"parity" is the goal of Soviet nuclear strategy and forces. Taken
as a whole, the selections record the concerns and hopes of
government leaders who bear responsibility for protecting their
nation's security in the nuclear age. The general introduction is
structured and written in a straightforward, succinct fashion that
helps the student master the seemingly inchoate mass of ideas
surrounding the arms race. The development of Soviet and U.S.
policies and postures since the Cold War is recounted. The
ramifications of such concepts as counterforce strategy, massive
retaliation, assured destruction, deterrence, stability, and the
strategic defense initiative are logically and thoroughly explained
so that students with no background can easily grasp the
discussions that follow. The introduction also explores the
intricacies of arms control negotiations, as well as the pitfalls
that have been and will be encountered by the superpowers. With
their analysis of the arms race, the editors bridge the gap between
antinuclear activists and those who are legally charged with the
defense of their country. Intended for use as a basic text in
courses on national security, arms control, and peace studies, this
collection of primary sources encourages students to reassess their
own perceptions of the arms race. Each chapter contains its own
extensive introduction, and each part has a selected bibliography
that can be used for further study. The glossary at the end of the
text provides a comprehensive dictionary of arms control and
disarmament terms. The historic nature of the selections makes this
book a valuable resource for scholars, researchers, and libraries
as well.

Part of the Oxford American Ophthamology Library, this book
provides clear and detailed guidelines on the diagnosis and
treatment of glaucoma. Coverage spans the entire spectrum of
glaucoma, including descriptions of traditional and newly emerging
modalities available for glaucoma diagnosis and management.
Chapters discuss current imaging technology for glaucoma diagnosis
and monitoring, providing practical tips using case examples.
Management is also thoroughly addressed, from the treatment of
primary open angle glaucoma to management of complex secondary
glaucoma. Evidence-based management of glaucoma in different stages
of the disease is also discussed with highlights of the multicenter
glaucoma clinical trials.
Ever wondered why bread rises? Or why dough needs to rest? From
cakes and biscuits to flat breads and standard loaves, the
diversity of products is remarkable and the chemistry behind these
processes is equally fascinating. The Science of Bakery Products
explains the science behind bread making and other baked goods. It
looks at the chemistry of the ingredients, flour treatments, flour
testing and baking machinery. Individual chapters focus on the
science of breads, pastry, biscuits, wafers and cakes. The book
concludes with a look at some experiments and methods and goes on
to discuss some ideas for the future. The Science of Bakery
Products is an interesting and easy to read book, aimed at anyone
with an interest in everyday chemistry.
This companion explores Soren Kierkegaard's theological importance,
offering a comprehensive reading of his work through a distinctly
theological lens, including interpretative concerns, his approach
to specific doctrines, and theological trajectories for thinking
beyond his work. Beginning with essays on key interpretative
factors involved in approaching Kierkegaard's complex corpus, there
are also historical accounts of his theological development,
followed by - for the first time in a single volume - focused
expositions of Kierkegaard's approach to particular doctrinal
themes, from those oft-discussed in his work (e.g. Christology) to
those more understated (e.g. Pneumatology). The book concludes with
theological trajectories for Kierkegaard's thought in the
twenty-first century. This volume helps not only to situate
Kierkegaard's theology more firmly on the map, but to situate
Kierkegaard more firmly on the theological map, as one who has much
to offer both the form and content of the theological task.
The sequence of events which led to the writing of this book
started at a seminar on Manufacturing Technology in the Electronics
Industry given by the Institution of Production Engineers in 1987.
The seminar identified that the field of manufacturing engineering
for the electronics industry was effectively missing from the vast
majority of production engineering degree courses. The reason for
this was that production engineering departments typically spring
from mechanical engineering departments. This leads to a mechanical
bias in the practical aspects of such courses. The consequence of
this was that electronics companies could not recruit graduates
with both relevant production engineering and electronic
engineering backgrounds. This necessitated either recruiting
production engineering graduates and giving them the necessary
electronic engineering training, or giving production engineering
training to electronic engineering graduates. A consequence of the
lack of courses in a subject is that there is also a lack of
relevant textbooks in the area, as most textbooks are intended to
tie into courses. In the field of manufacturing technology for the
electronics industry, existing textbooks tend to be highly
specialized and mainly concerned with the fabrication of
semiconductor devices.

Opening with a Foreword by James Alison, this volume is the first
in-depth treatment of Alison's theological method. John P. Edwards
shows that Alison's theological project outstrips Rene Girard's
application of mimetic theory to theology. He concludes that an
explicitly Christian theological perspective is necessary for
providing a fully coherent account of Girard's notions of
"conversion" and "mimetic desire". This volume grounds Alison's
theological method in his understanding of the ongoing interaction
between conversion and theological reflection, which is informed by
his use of mimetic theory. While Alison describes this method as
"theology in the order of the discovery", the author refers to it
as an "inductive theology". The volume closes by demonstrating that
such a theology bears fruit in a renewed understanding of the value
of Christian doctrines and, particularly, the doctrine of
revelation.
