This is a new type of calculus book: Students who master this text will be well versed in calculus and, in addition, possess a useful working knowledge of how to use modern symbolic mathematics software systems for solving problems in calculus. This will equip them with the mathematical competence they need for science and engineering and the competitive workplace. MACSYMA is used as the software in which the example programs and calculations are given. However, by the experience gained in this book, the student will also be able to use any of the other major mathematical software systems, like for example AXIOM, MATHEMATICA, MAPLE, DERIVE or REDUCE, for "doing calculus on computers".

Multivariable Calculus with Mathematica is a textbook addressing the calculus of several variables. Instead of just using Mathematica to directly solve problems, the students are encouraged to learn the syntax and to write their own code to solve problems. This not only encourages scientific computing skills but at the same time stresses the complete understanding of the mathematics. Questions are provided at the end of the chapters to test the student's theoretical understanding of the mathematics, and there are also computer algebra questions which test the student's ability to apply their knowledge in non-trivial ways. This book illustrates how MAPLE can be used to supplement a standard, elementary text in ordinary and partial differential equation. MAPLE is used with several purposes in mind. The authors are firm believers in the teaching of mathematics as an experimental science where the student does numerous calculations and then synthesizes these experiments into a general theory. Projects based on the concept of writing generic programs test a student's understanding of the theoretical material of the course. A student who can solve a general problem certainly can solve a specialized problem. The authors show MAPLE has a built-in program for doing these problems. While it is important for the student to learn MAPLES in built programs, using these alone removes the student from the conceptual nature of differential equations. The goal of the book is to teach the students enough about the computer algebra system MAPLE so that it can be used in an investigative way. The investigative materials which are present in the book are done in desk calculator mode DCM, that is the calculations are in the order command line followed by output line. Frequently, this approach eventually leads to a program or procedure in MAPLE designated by proc and completed by end proc. He is a three-time Awardee of the Humboldt-Preis, and. received a British Research Council award to do research at Oxford University. He is also the recipient of a Doctor Honoris Causa from the I. Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics at Tbilisi State University. George C. Hsiao holds a doctorate degree in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Hsiao is the Carl J. Rees Professor of Mathematics Emeritus at the University of Delaware from which he retired after 43 years on the faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Dr. Hsiao was also the recipient of the Francis Alison Faculty Award, the University of Delaware's most prestigious faculty honor, which was bestowed on him in recognition of his scholarship, professional achievement and dedication. His primary research interests are integral equations and partial differential equations with their applications in mathematical physics and continuum mechanics. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 publications in books and journals. Dr. Hsiao is world-renowned for his expertise in Boundary Element Method and has given invited lectures all over the world. Robert J. Ronkese holds a PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Delaware. He is a professor of mathematics at the US Merchant Marine Academy on Long Island. As an undergraduate, he was an exchange student at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. He has held visiting positions at the US Military Academy at West Point and at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
Djupe and Gilbert investigate the political influence of church and how membership in organized religious bodies shapes the political life of members. Djupe and Gilbert's goal in this inquiry is to re-center scholarly attention on the voluntary association as an essential element of American civic and political life. They develop a theoretical framework that captures the multifaceted elements of church life that affect individual political attitudes and actions. Political information from clergy, small groups, and social networks flows plentifully in churches, but individuals process that information differently depending on their motivations related to their status in the church. Articulating a more fully specified model of how associations expose individuals to political information and norms will help us understand the political opinions and behavior of citizens and the contribution of that pattern to sustaining democracy.

This volume applies well-known and highly regarded data in a new way and analyzes the impact of churches today on American political attitudes and behavior. These important findings measure how churches serve as political and social contexts and affect voting behavior; party identification; and the positions that local congregations and their membership take on abortion, public prayer, the economy, defense, support for minorities, and other issues. Political scientists, sociologists, and religious scholars will find these new interpretations of survey data clear, well-supported, and carefully qualified. This study of the role of religion in political decision making uses National Election study data, county-level data and the South Bend Community Study. Chapter 1 provides a general overview and introduction. Chapter 2 fills out the discussion about the nature of religious and social contexts and their relationship to churches and their members. These early chapters also define the design and research methodology and describe earlier research on the subject. Chapter 3 considers county-level data and changes relation to religious environments and individual behavior. In chapter 4, findings relating to voting and party identification are covered. Chapter 5 considers voter turnout, attitudes on public policy issues, economic expectations, views on issues relevant to the church. Chapter 6 evaluates church contexts and individual self-evaluations and perceptions about the impact of social contexts. The political influence of church discussion partners is the focus of chapter 7. The final chapter points to the political relevance of churches as contexts and summarizes some of the theoretical conclusions derived from the empirical study. Appendices provide the methodological material about variables and coding schemes needed for understanding the design of the work. A bibliography points to related studies of note.

Gilbert et al. examine the impact of churches and church membership patterns on third parties and independent candidates in 20th-century U.S. politics. Candidates who choose not to run for office under the rubric of a major party face a well-known set of obstacles, yet the absence of discussion about the interconnections between religious institutions and minor parties is striking. The book presents a theoretical framework for understanding how religious institutions create, support, and sustain the political culture of local communities; by playing this role religious institutions support major parties and impede the electoral chances of political outsiders. The book's central finding is that third candidates are not privy to the ties that bind Democratic and Republican voters to their parties; one of the factors that creates and strengthens such ties is religion. Therefore, third candidates do best where church and party loyalties are weakest, or where third candidates have existing bases of support. The rare third candidate or minor party that possesses a base of support centered around a denomination or religious group can overcome such barriers. These conclusions are supported by analysis of census data, election returns, and voter surveys spanning the 20th century. Special attention is given to the 1992 and 1996 presidential candidacies of H. Ross Perot. This is an important analysis for scholars and other researchers dealing with American third parties and independent candidates and the impact of religion on politics.
