Ruthenium Oxidation Complexes explores ruthenium complexes,
particularly those in higher oxidation states, which function as
useful and selective organic oxidation catalysts. Particular
emphasis is placed on those systems which are of industrial
significance. The preparation, properties and applications of the
ruthenium complexes are described, followed by a presentation of
their oxidative properties and summary of the different mechanisms
involved in the organic oxidations (e.g. oxidations of alcohols,
alkenes, arenes and alkynes, alkanes, amines, ethers, phopshines
and miscellaneous substrates). Moreover, future trends and
developments in the area are discussed.
This monograph is aimed at inorganic, organic, industrial and
catalysis chemists, especially those who wish to carry out specific
organic oxidations using catalytic methods.
Focusing on orally transmitted cultural forms in the Caribbean,
this book reaffirms the importance of myth and symbol in folk
consciousness as a mode of imaginative conceptualization. Paul A.
Griffith cross-references Kamau Brathwaite and Derek Walcott's
postcolonial debates with issues at seminal sites where Caribbean
imaginary insurgencies took root. This book demonstrates the ways
residually oral forms distilled history, society, and culture to
cleverly resist aggressions authored through colonialist
presumptions. In an analysis of the archetypal patterns in the oral
tradition--both literary and nonliterary, this impressive book
gives insight into the way in which people think about the world
and represent themselves in it.
This book provides an in-depth study of the moral economies
emerging from within conditions of precarity in rural communities
in contemporary Myanmar. James C. Scott's seminal work on 'The
Moral Economy of the Peasant' argued that peasant notions of
subsistence and expectations of reciprocity formed the basis for
subsequent rebellion as economic conditions changed and new market
forces were introduced. Now, nearly a century on, Michael Griffiths
argues that the conditions faced by rural communities in Myanmar
remain precarious, but different forms of moral economy shape their
responses. In the contemporary context, the moral economy of rural
communities is characterized by the emergence of localized,
self-organized community welfare associations which adopt a
sophisticated iteration of self-help framed by the Buddhist concept
of parahita (altruism). This book analyses the performative nature
of these welfare organizations as a form of politics, asking how
notions of citizenship expressed in these organizations promote
more inclusive, or more exclusive practices towards non-Buddhist
minorities. At a time when discourse on identity in Myanmar has
been dominated by practices of othering and exclusion, this book
provides an important analysis of what citizenship and reciprocity
means in contemporary rural Myanmar. This book is a critical
resource for researchers working on rural development and the
social sciences in Southeast Asia.

The application of the Fourier transform is being seen to an
increasing extent in all branches of chemistry, but it is in the
area of chemical analysis that the greatest activity is taking
place. Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance
spectrometry are already routine methods for obtaining
high-sensitivity IR and NMR spectra. Analogous methods are now
being developed for mass spectrometry (Fourier transform ion cyclo
tron resonance spectrometry) and microwave spectroscopy, and
Fourier transform techniques have been successfully applied in
several areas of electrochemistry. In addition the fast Fourier
transform algorithm has been used for smoothing, interpolation, and
more efficient storage of data, and has been studied as a potential
method for more efficient identification of samples using pattern
recognition techniques. Linear transforms have also been shown to
be useful in analytical chemistry. Probably the most important of
these is the Hadamard transform, which has been applied in
alternative methods for obtaining IR and NMR data at high
sensitivity. Even though measurements involving this algorithm will
probably not be applied as universally as their Fourier transform
ana logs, in the area of pattern recognition application of the
Hadamard trans form will in all probability prove more important
than application of the Fourier transform."
A comprehensive, self-contained treatment presenting general results of the theory. Establishes a geometric intuition and a working facility with specific geometric practices. Emphasizes applications through the study of interesting examples and the development of computational tools. Coverage ranges from analytic to geometric. Treats basic techniques and results of complex manifold theory, focusing on results applicable to projective varieties, and includes discussion of the theory of Riemann surfaces and algebraic curves, algebraic surfaces and the quadric line complex as well as special topics in complex manifolds.
With platinum and rhodium, palladium is one of the most important
members of the platinum metal group. The last Gmelin treatment of
it was in 1942, and knowledge of its properties and chemistry has
made enormous strides since then. This volume is primarily
concerned with binary compounds and with the coordination complexes
derived from them. Although it is a member of the
nickel-palladium-platinum triad, it more closely resernblas
platinum in its binary and coordination chemistry, though being a
second-row transition element it displays less tendency than does
platinum to assume higher oxidation states. ln heterogeneous and
homogeneous catalysis, referred to at appropriate points, palladium
and its complexes are of great importance in bulk and fine
chemieals production, effecting a wide variety of organic
transformations. The arrangement of material in this volume follows
the traditional Gmelin arrangement. Within each category of
compounds or complexes the material is arranged, as usual, in order
of ascending metal oxidation states (e. g., palladium(ll) precedes
palladium(IV)). The chemistry of the palladium-hydrogen system is
so large that it merits a separate volume, so this book starts with
the binary oxides and oxopalladates followed by hydroxides, hydroxo
complexes and aquo complexes. Then nitrides and nitrates are
treated. They are followed by the large chapters on halides and
their complexes (172 pages). The largest single chapter in this
volume (11 0 pages) deals with chlorides, chloropalladates and
other chloro complexes.
