The Secret Teachings of All Ages is perhaps the most comprehensive
and complete esoteric encyclopedia ever written. The sheer scope
and ambition of this book are stunning. In this book Manly P. Hall
has successfully distilled the essence of more arcane subjects than
one would think possible. He covers Rosicrucianism and other secret
societies, alchemy, cryptology, Kabbalah, Tarot, pyramids, the
Zodiac, Pythagorean philosophy, Masonry, gemology, Nicholas
Flammel, the identity of William Shakespeare, The Life and
Teachings of Thoth Hermes Trismegistus, The Qabbalah, The Hiramic
Legend, The Tree of the Sephiroth, and Mystic Christianity. There
are more than 200 illustrations included here (and in the trade
paperback edition) many of which have been omitted from other
publisher's editions of this book. This is essential reading for
anyone wishing to explore esoteric knowledge.
In this book Nicholas A. Ashford and Ralph P. Hall offer a unified,
transdisciplinary approach for achieving sustainable development in
industrialized nations. They present an insightful analysis of the
ways in which industrial states are currently unsustainable and how
economic and social welfare are related to the environment, to
public health and safety, and to earning capacity and meaningful
and rewarding employment. The authors argue for the design of
multipurpose solutions to the sustainability challenge that
integrate economics, employment, technology, environment,
industrial development, national and international law, trade,
finance, and public and worker health and safety. This book is
essential reading for anyone with a policy or scholarly interest in
sustainable development and the critical roles of the economy,
employment, and the environment.
How do European states adjust to international markets? Why do
French governments of both left and right face a crisis of public
confidence? In this book, leading experts on France chart the
dramatic changes that have taken place in its polity, economy and
society since the 1980s and develop an analysis of social change
relevant to all democracies. Exploring immigration, industrial
relations, generational conflict, and politics, they find the roots
of discontent in the transformation of a society exemplifying a
"new" Europe.
This book presents a wide ranging coverage of principles,
state-of-the-art design and up-to-date applications of microstrip
antennas; Includes detailed explanations of a variety of analytical
techniques from transmission line theory to moments methods and
their applications to CAD; Covers the numerous patch designs and
array configurations giving many examples of practical
applications; Discusses microstrip technology in detail including
substrates, processing and environmental aspects; Addresses
measurement methods particular to printed antennas such as
substrate and connector characterisation and near field probing;
Application areas covered include antennas for satellite
terrestrial and mobile communications, conformal and aerospace
antennas, phased arrays, hyperthermia applicators and millimetric
antennas.
The ever-increasing release of harmful agents due to human
activities has led in some areas of the world to heavy pollution.
In order to protect human health and the environment, environmental
standards that shall limit the release and the concentration of
those toxic agents in the environment and hence the exposure to it
have to be established. The related assessment and decision-making
procedures have to be based on solid scientific data about the
effects and mechanisms of these agents as well as on ethical,
social and economic aspects. For risk evaluation, the knowledge of
the dose response curve is an essential prerequisite. Dose
responses without a threshold dose are most critical in this
connection. Such dose responses are assumed for mutagenic and
carcinogenic effects, which, therefore, dominate also the
discussion in this book. In the environmentally important low dose
range, risk estimation can only be achieved by extrapolation from
higher doses with measurable effects. The extrapolation is
accompanied with uncertainties which makes risk evaluation as well
as risk communication frequently problematic. In order to ensure
rational efficient and fair decisions beyond a sound scientific
assessment the dialogue between disciplines, with the affected
people and with the general public is necessary. In this book, the
whole range of relevant and essential aspects of risk evaluation
and standard setting is addressed. Starting with the ethical
foundations, the sound analysis of recent scientific findings sets
the frame for further reflections by theory of cognition,
psychosocial sciences, and jurisprudence. The authors end up with
concluding recommendations for coping with the recentproblems of
standard setting in the field of environmentally relevant low
doses. The book is designed to a readership of scientists,
legislators, administrators, and the interested public.
This textbook provides an introduction to the concept of
sustainability in the context of transportation planning,
management, and decision-making. The book is divided into two
parts. In the first part, indicators and frameworks for measuring
sustainable development in the transportation sector are developed.
In the second, the authors analyze actual planning and
decision-making in transportation agencies in a variety of
governance settings. This analysis of real-world case studies
demonstrates the benefits and limitations of current approaches to
sustainable development in transportation. The book concludes with
a discussion on how to make sustainability count in transportation
decision-making and practice.
This book invites readers to explore how fourteen different experts
in their respective fields create deeper meaning in their
profession and work with students through thinking, in multiple
ways, about the self who teaches, the self who learns, and the ways
in which these selves interact within the academy. Essays in this
book explore the "inside" of academia through three themes:
Pursuing Authenticity, Creating Creative Community, and Humanizing
Education. Contributors reflect on their own lived experiences in
the academy and on pedagogies that they have created for their
students. Embodied education, the theoretical framework of this
book, draws on ideas of educators Parker Palmer from the West and
Dr. Chinmay Pandya from the East, emerging through contributors'
collaborative work. In embodied education, teachers and learners
share experiences that lead to self-understanding and together find
ways to humanize spaces in academia.
