When this book was written, industrialism was just starting to take
root and Proudhon saw a problem with the amount of work that was
put into a product and the amount that a business was charging for
it. This work then argues for fair pricing for the work put into it
and that would attribute justice in the industrial age. Proudhon
also makes large use of the religious fervour at the time to either
prove his point or discount the religious beliefs of other
altogether.
This collection of literature attempts to compile many of the
classic, timeless works that have stood the test of time and offer
them at a reduced, affordable price, in an attractive volume so
that everyone can enjoy them.
This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for
quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in
an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the
digitization process. Though we have made best efforts - the books
may have occasional errors that do not impede the reading
experience. We believe this work is culturally important and have
elected to bring the book back into print as part of our continuing
commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide.
Property is impossible; equality does not exist. We hate the
former, and yet wish to possess it; the latter rules all our
thoughts, yet we know not how to reach it. Who will explain this
profound antagonism between our conscience and our will? Who will
point out the causes of this pernicious error, which has become the
most sacred principle of justice and society?
The General Idea of the Revolution in the 19th Century was written
while Proudhon was serving three years in prison for previous
writings. The general background of the book was the failed
revolution of 1848 in which Proudhon had participated.
