Designing Inclusive Interactions contains the proceedings of the fifth Cambridge Workshop on Universal Access and Assistive Technology (CWUAAT), incorporating the 8th Cambridge Workshop on Rehabilitation Robotics, held in Cambridge, England, in March 2010. It contains contributions from an international group of leading researchers in the fields of Universal Access and Assistive Technology. This conference will mainly focus on the following principal topics: 1. Designing assistive and rehabilitation technology for working and daily living environments 2. Measuring inclusion for the design of products for work and daily living 3. Inclusive interaction design and new technologies for inclusive design 4. Assembling new user data for inclusive design 5. The design of accessible and inclusive contexts: work and daily living environments 6. Business advantages and applications of inclusive design 7. Legislation, standards and government awareness of inclusive design

"Designing Inclusive Futures" reflects the need to explore, in a coherent way, the issues and practicalities that lie behind design that is intended to extend our active future lives. This encompasses design for inclusion in daily life at home but also extends to the workplace and for products within these contexts. For example, given trends in employment sector growth, skills requirements, labour supply and demographic change, there is a need to predict the critical areas where individual capabilities are mismatched with the physical, social and organisational demands of work. This mismatch, which can be addressed within the domain of inclusive design, is pervasively linked to real artefacts in workspaces and their intersection with the health factors that relate to ageing. This book is the result of the fourth CWUAAT workshop held in Cambridge, England in April 2008.

Rapid and unprecedented population ageing poses a serious social and economic challenge across the developed world. Shifts in dependency ratios point to escalating welfare and pensions costs which require radical and imaginative responses from Government and industry. The key to this is maintaining a healthy population that is able and willing to work longer before retirement and can remain independent for as long as possible afterwards as well as bringing disabled people into mainstream life and employment.

This book was stimulated by the third CWUAAT workshop, held in Cambridge, England in April 2006; the contributors representing leading researchers in the fields of Inclusive Design, Rehabilitation Robotics, Universal Access and Assistive Technology.

Contributions focus on the following topics:

• design issues for a more inclusive world;
• enabling computer access and the development of new technologies;
• assistive technology and rehabilitation robotics; and,
• understanding users and involving them in design.

The CWUAAT workshops have a general focus on product and solution development. As a result, many of the requirements for the successful design of assistive and accessible technology have been addressed and these range from the identification and capture of the needs of the users, through to the development and evaluation of truly usable and accessible systems for users with special needs.

With The Candied Road Ahead, Robert P. Langdon shares select poems and stories written over a 25 year period. His works are sometimes passionate, sometimes whimsical, but always personal. Langdon's writing focuses on life experiences and memories of family and friends; identity; growing up gay and Catholic during the 1980s; pop culture; social issues; love and relationships. Inside The Candied Road Ahead, you'll find a sexual awakening with the help of Brooke Shields and John & Yoko; the consequence of urban sprawl; one-way phone conversations that prove you can't teach an old dog new tricks (or can you?); a new take on a classic fairy tale; a modern version of happily ever after; an erotic trip to the dentist; and something a little creepy. Robert P. Langdon is a poet living in Northern NJ. He has worn many hats over the years including Director of Sales and Marketing at a publishing house, Director and curator at an art gallery, professional photographer and teacher. Robert lived in San Francisco for 13 years which helped raise his political and social consciousness and develop a strong appreciation for diversity and community in all it's forms. These themes show up often in his writing. Robert has been writing poetry and the occasional short fiction since the late 1980s. He began writing after being exposed to the poetry of Anne Sexton and discovering, through her writing, that poetry can be exciting and accessible. He is drawn to strong imagery and is influenced by confessional poetry and the works of Sexton, Sharon Olds, Diane Ackerman, Toi Derricotte, Robert Lowell, Ai, and Gregory Orr among others.Robert's own writing tends to focus on issues of identity and he uses poetry as a way to work through personal issues and reflect on meaningful events in his life.
