Bismarck once said that God looked after drunkards, children and
the U.S. of A. Some say that baseball should be added to the list.
It must have been divine intervention that led the sport through a
series of transformative challenges from the end of World War II to
the games first expansion in 1961. During this period baseball was
forced to make a number of painful choices. From 1949 to 1954,
attendance dropped more than 30 percent, as once loyal fans turned
to other activities, started going to see more football, and began
watching television. Also, the sport had to wrestle with racial
integration, franchise shifts and unionization while trying to keep
a firm hold on the minds and emotions of the public. This work
chronicles how baseball, with imagination and some foresight,
survived postwar challenges. Some of the solutions came about
intelligently, some clumsily, but by 1960 baseball was a stronger,
healthier and better balanced institution than ever before.
This book explores some relevant distortions and market failures in
financial and banking markets caused by the recent financial crisis
and offers important insights to policymakers as well. After having
introduced the reader to the economic background behind the origin
of the present financial turmoil, the book proposes a distinct
angle to look at some macro and microeconomic aspects. The volume
discusses whether and to what extent policies, implemented by
governments and monetary authorities to countervail bank defaults
and avoid a disastrous financial instability, have in some way
determined opportunistic conducts (moral hazard), changes in banks'
behaviour, distortive incentives and market failures. Furthermore,
the book offers a viewpoint on the effects of the evolution of
regulation for the banking sector. Finally, the book assesses how
the increase in the cost of funding and the shrinking in credit
supply (credit crunch) has modified the financial structure of
small and medium firms. To illustrate this, some specific cases at
Italian regional level are examined.

These proceedings are the result of a three-day meeting held in
Oogliani (Italy), on October 2-4 2003, whose title was "VIrtual
Astrophysical Jets 2003". Our goal in convening this meeting was to
gather some of the scientists among the most active in the field of
numerical simulations and modelling of astrophysi cal jets. For
keeping the participants close to the "real world", we also invited
a few observers to give up-to-date reviews outlining the
state-of-the-art of jet observations. The principal aim of the
meeting was thus to present and critically discuss the
state-of-the-art numerical simulations, analytical models and
laboratory ex periments for reproducing the main aspects of
astrophysical jets and compar ing them with observations. The
discussion has been focused on the following topics: * Observations
and intepretions of jets from young stars and AGNs, comparisons of
models with observations; * MHO accelerations of jets: steady
self-similar models, MHO numerical simula tions of time-dependent
accelerations mechanisms; * Jet stability and interaction with the
ambient: formation of knots in YSO jets, jet survival to
instabilities, deceleration of relativistic jets in FRI sources,
simulations of jets-IGM interactions, jets propagation and galaxy
formation; * Numerical codes and their validation: relativistic MHO
codes, comparisons among different numerical schemes, jets in the
laboratory and code validation. These topics have been discussed
intensively during the meeting, and the out come of these
discussions is presented in this volume. The contributions have
been divided in five sections.
The dramatic evolution of new technology in diagnostic and
therapeutic radiology has changed the whole field of medicine.
Ultrasonography, computed tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance,
and digital radiography are those new techniques which are
undergoing continuous development, providing us with increasingly
re fined methods for establishing the cause of disease and for
treating the patient. Using radiologic technique, ingenious methods
are continuously being developed to en sure less expensive, less
traumatic, and more efficient therapy. Transluminal angio plasty,
embolization of tumors or bleeding vessels, extraction or
dissolution of stones, and regional infusions are some of these
therapeutic methods in modem diagnostic radiology. Every day new
ideas arise which are published in a multitude of papers. This
heavy flow of information limits the possibility of selecting from
a core of information and often prevents radiologists from
communicating efficiently with their colleagues in other countries
or continents. European radiologists are additionally hampered from
participating in international communication because of the
language barriers created by the national journals. As a result,
Europe's contribution to scientific progress in this
interdisciplinary field has influenced only regional developments."
This history of the birth of modern science is ideal for those
engaging with the subject for the first time. It shatters the
illusion that science is 'dry' and divorced from culture by
exploring the powerful clashes between traditions and value systems
that gave rise to it. The author shows how many of the
characteristics that distinguish science today emerged in the midst
of the wars and plagues of the seventeenth century and defines what
was new about this form of knowledge.
Rossi's account covers topics such as the new astronomy,
discoveries made with microscopes, the principle of inertia,
experiments on voids, and the circulatory system. Alongside these,
each chapter also addresses the great ideas that were central to
this intellectual revolution: the new appraisal of technology, a
new view of God as an engineer or clock maker, the introduction of
the dimension of time into the study of nature, and so on. This
passionate book will enable readers to engage with the complex
relationship of science and philosophy.
Even though the Eastern Orthodox Church is widely recognized as
having a deep and profound theological understanding of the world
as God's creation, practice of this theology has been elusive. To
address this dilemma this text provides guidance on the spiritual
and physical steps that are necessary for Orthodox Christians to
apply their theology to ecological issues. This book includes a
special foreword by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch
Bartholomew who introduces the challenge of greening the Church. In
his commentary, he sees that the application of this book's themes
can lead to the creation of "green parishes" and even "green
priests" throughout the world. Throughout the book the principles
and practices underlying the transformation and transfiguration of
creation are emphasized. The result is a simple yet comprehensive
"hands-on" approach to a Christian caring for the earth. This is
accomplished by providing an organic sequence of themes that engage
the development of ecological consciousness within the Church. The
book unfolds in the following manner. First, Greening the Orthodox
Parish provides theological foundations for ecological action. This
includes the writings of the Orthodox patriarchs as they translate
theology into a call for Christian action on ecology; the
Scriptural passages which lead to care for the earth; and the
writings of the saints which provide historical perspective on
ecology as a perennial imperative for the Church. Second, upon
these foundations - the Scriptures, the saints, and the voice of
the Church, a series of issues are examined through Orthodox
theology and modern science. This leads to spiritual direction on
how to extend the teachings of the Church into issues such as
global warming, toxic chemicals, forests, consumerism, etc., so
that healing direction results for parishioners, the surrounding
culture, and through these, the environment. Third, a process for
developing parish groups is identified so that any parish may
address environmental issues. The task is not only the greening of
parish action, but a greening of attitudes. For this task
principles are provided including a check list for pastors to
ensure that the parish is using suitable methods for energy and
conservation. Guidelines are also available for parishioner
attitudes so that they may develop ecological consciousness that is
at once obedience to God, fidelity to the Church, and an engagement
with the issues that assault the life of the parish. Fourth, a
further orientation to Orthodox ecological awareness is cultivated
through the inclusion of a study course that uses key writings by
Orthodox hierarchs and theologians. The task of greening the parish
requires study and application. This course launches a journey of
learning and growing in ecological awareness that becomes an
extension of the life of the parish into the life of the world.
Throughout the book a special emphasis exists on the ecological
witness of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Not only is this book
dedicated to His All-Holiness, but it relies on his writings for a
stream of quotations. These citations indicate that this greening
theme is not some modern innovation creeping into Orthodox thought.
Rather, it is an extension of timeless theological principles to
the serious issues facing our world. Creation care is akin to new
wine drawn from old wineskins; it is a continuation of the gospel
message that allows an addressing of the problems facing the modern
world. Jesus Christ taught us the need to do the will of God "on
earth as it is in heaven." This Handbook is only a contemporary
pathway for the application of the timeless Orthodox faith to the
issues of the modern world.
For more than a hundred years, baseball has been woven into the
American way of life. By the time they reach high school, children
have learned about the struggles and triumphs of players like
Jackie Robinson. Generations of family members often gather
together to watch their favorite athletes in stadiums or on TV.
Famous players like Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Hank Aaron, Cal
Ripken, and Derek Jeter have shown their athletic prowess on the
field and captured the hearts of millions of fans, while the sport
itself has influenced American culture like no other athletic
endeavor. In Baseball and American Culture: A History, John P.
Rossi builds on the research and writing of four generations of
baseball historians. Tracing the intimate connections between
developments in baseball and changes in American society, Rossi
examines a number of topics including: *the spread of the sport
from the North to the South during the Civil War *the impact on the
sport during the Depression and World War II *baseball's expansion
in the post-war years *the role of baseball in the Civil Rights
movement *the sport's evolution during the modern era Complimented
by supplementary readings and discussion questions linked to each
chapter, this book pays special attention to the ways in which
baseball has influenced American culture and values. Baseball and
American Culture is the ultimate resource for students, scholars,
and fans interested in how this classic sport has helped shape the
nation.

As a part of popular culture, sport has made a deep impression in
American life. And nowhere is this clearer than in baseball, the
game that seems to transcend generations and has made its way into
our language and literature. In The National Game, John Rossi
offers not only an expert overview of baseball over the past 175
years; he shows how the game has reflected and contributed to
changes in American society over that time. The country grew up
playing baseball, Mr. Rossi notes, but the professional game took
hold in the cities of the Northeast just as the nation was
transforming itself from a rural to an urban society. Essentially a
middle-class attempt to create a club sport, the game began early
on to integrate immigrant groups-and over the years it became an
important pathway to acceptance for all kinds of outsiders. The
National Game chronicles baseball's popular successes and financial
failures; its interleague wars and continuing struggles between
owners and players; and its accommodations to radio and
television-without neglecting the colorful players and managers who
have won the hearts of fans. For a readable, concise history of the
game and its place in American culture, Mr. Rossi's book is hard to
beat. With 10 black-and-white photographs.
