Historical Dictionary of Law Enforcement (Hardcover, New): Mitchel P. Roth Historical Dictionary of Law Enforcement (Hardcover, New)
Mitchel P. Roth
R2,540 Discovery Miles 25 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Viewing policing from an international perspective, this volume covers the history of law enforcement from early accounts of policing under Caesar Augustus to such present-day events as Rodney King and the LAPD. American policing dominates the book, but it also covers such items as the 1829 London Metropolitan police model and Continental innovations stemming from Napoleonic France. While including such well-known Americans as Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, the book also covers important policewomen, forgotten but exceptional African American policemen, and Indian Police forces that ranged the Oklahoma Territory. The book will be a useful resource for all those interested in the history of law enforcement.

Unlike existing reference works that try to cover both lawmen and criminals, this book focuses on the police diaspora. In addition to traditional police officers, it also includes nontraditional examples of law enforcement, such as private detectives, vigilante groups, and organizations such as Wells Fargo and the Pinkertons. The book provides an instructive blend of history, criminology, and police science.

Global Organized Crime - A Reference Handbook (Hardcover): Mitchel P. Roth Global Organized Crime - A Reference Handbook (Hardcover)
Mitchel P. Roth
R1,991 Discovery Miles 19 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a comprehensive, multidimensional look into the major activities, groups, causes, and policing strategies related to global organized crime. Global Organized Crime: A Reference Handbook examines global organized crime dating back to its 17th-century roots. Unlike most works on the subject, which take a parochial approach by concentrating on individual countries or regions, this book uniquely details the impact of 21st-century globalization on such groups and their activities. Exploring the continuum of international organized crime and related developments from its early beginnings to the present era, the book also looks at the complicated issues that continue to influence its growth. It covers the impact of the end of the Cold War, immigration, the global drug trade, weapons sales, human smuggling and trafficking, the convergence of funding sources, and the effects of technology. What especially distinguishes this book is the connections it makes between organized crime activities and failed states, civil wars, political transitions, regional conflicts, and terrorist groups.

Economists and the State - What Went Wrong (Hardcover): Timothy P. Roth Economists and the State - What Went Wrong (Hardcover)
Timothy P. Roth
R2,706 Discovery Miles 27 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This important book presents a compelling case that traditional received theory (Paretian-utilitarian) has followed a dangerous path one not espoused by Adam Smith and Nobel Laureate James Buchanan. The latter viewed value and preferences as mutable (not 'given') and believed that rights systems must underlie moral law and impartial justice. Men must be 'taken as they are' in this system. Adoption of the Smith-Buchanan paradigm, Professor Roth brilliantly argues, leads to the kind of moral and political philosophy that informs the science of statutes and legislators that underpins our Founding Fathers' republican self-government project.' - Bob Ekelund, Professor and Eminent Scholar in Economics (Emeritus), Auburn University, USEconomists and the State shows how modern economists have strayed far from Adam Smith's procedurally based, consequence-detached political economy. Timothy P. Roth argues that this wrong turn has left economists ill-equipped to address an expanding federal enterprise and new threats to our self-governing republic. He subsequently sets out to offer ways to redress this. Making the case for a return to the moral and political philosophy that informed Adam Smith's 'science of the statesman or legislator,' this book argues that economists must reject their relentlessly utilitarian, teleological theory of the state and embrace Nobel Laureate James M. Buchanan's constitutional political economy project. The author outlines the specific requirements of a non-teleological conception of the state - a conception that is vital to the continuing development of a theory of the state informed by a prior ethical commitment to the moral equivalence of persons. This book will appeal to scholars and students of political economy, political thought, public choice economics and Austrian economics as well as to practitioners and policy-makers interested in how economics should support those serving the public. Contents: Preface 1. The Smithian Inheritance 2. Institutions Matter 3. What Economists Do 4. The Founders' Republican Self-government Project Derailed 5. What Has Been Wrought 6. What Went Wrong 7. Judicial Corporal Punishment as an Alternative to Incarceration in the United States - Lessons Learned from Islamic Criminal... Judicial Corporal Punishment as an Alternative to Incarceration in the United States - Lessons Learned from Islamic Criminal Justice Systems
Sanaz Alasti; Foreword by Mitchel P. Roth
R2,000 Discovery Miles 20 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sanaz Alasti leaves the mainstream alternatives to incarceration to examine a different, seemingly archaic approach, physical (but non-carceral) punishment—corporal punishment. This book ignites debates about the history, persistence, and use of corporal punishment in criminal justice systems. Alasti compares penological practices in in Western societies, represented by the United States, and Islamic societies, represented by Iran, to analyze which practices are more deterrent, less costly, and most humane. While Alasti does not suggest this should be the norm, she does present intriguing questions. Which is more barbaric? Is judicial corporal punishment a more humane and effective form of punishment compared to incarceration? Is corporal punishment a less cruel alternative to spending years behind bars in primitive and punitive jails and prisons? This book would be of interest to those studying criminology, criminal justice, history, law, and sociology.

Equality, Rights and the Autonomous Self - Toward a Conservative Economics (Hardcover): Timothy P. Roth Equality, Rights and the Autonomous Self - Toward a Conservative Economics (Hardcover)
Timothy P. Roth
R2,946 Discovery Miles 29 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Modern liberalism asserts the transcendental, autonomous self's 'natural rights' against others' moralistic and political preferences, and regards the economist's utilitarian social welfare theory as instrumental to the achievement of 'social justice'. Timothy Roth argues that the liberal enterprise ignores Kant's 'two points of view', confuses Kantian autonomy with moral and political license, mistakes utilitarian impersonality for impartiality, and takes no account of the indeterminacy of social welfare theory's fundamental theoretical constructs. In contrast, the author shows that Kant's 'two points of view' inform the conservative's constitutive political position and animate the consequence-detached, explicitly normative work of the conservative, constitutional political economist. He shows that, unlike modern liberalism, conservatism is grounded in Kant's 'two points of view', that utilitarian social welfare theory cannot be instrumental to the achievement of social justice, and that constitutional political economy is conservative economics. Economists interested in political economy, methodological issues, social welfare theory, public choice theory, or the moral foundations of economics will find much of interest in this thought-provoking volume. Political scientists interested in the philosophical foundations of modern liberalism and conservatism will also want to add this title to their library.

Morality, Political Economy and American Constitutionalism (Hardcover): Timothy P. Roth Morality, Political Economy and American Constitutionalism (Hardcover)
Timothy P. Roth
R2,941 Discovery Miles 29 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Founders of the American Republic set up a remarkable experiment in self-government. Today, debates rage as to the philosophical legacy of this ongoing experiment. In this fascinating study, Timothy Roth offers a critical analysis of modern liberalism and the economic theory to which it is conjoined - social welfare theory. The author argues that social welfare theory cannot be reconciled with the American Founders' procedurally based, consequence-detached republican self-government project. The book goes on to explore and expound the Founders' desire to promote respect for the moral law, their appreciation of the reciprocal relationship between morality and law, and their commitment to the promotion of justice in the sense of impartial institutions; ideas which find expression in contractarian, constitutional political economy. Scholars and students in economics, political science, law and philosophy will find this marvelous treatise an engaging and thought-provoking read.

The Present State of Consumer Theory - The Implications for Social Welfare Theory (Paperback, Third Edition): Timothy P. Roth The Present State of Consumer Theory - The Implications for Social Welfare Theory (Paperback, Third Edition)
Timothy P. Roth
R1,818 Discovery Miles 18 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The neoclassical theory of choice is an integral part of a large and growing literature. Its elegance, simplicity and apparent generality appear, increasingly, to influence the thinking of psychologists, sociologists, and political scientists. At the same time, the theory is subject to robust attack. The theme of the book is that the critics have it right. Account must be taken of the endogeneity of preference and value structures, of decision makers' cognitive limitations, of information asymmetries, of opportunistic behavior, and of positive transaction and decision costs. Yet these considerations militate against the specification of both the efficiency frontier and the Social Welfare Function. This, in turn, suggests that Social Welfare Theory is an inappropriate guide for the formulation of distributional and other economic policies. A corollary is that economists' (and others) attention should center less on 'getting the prices right' and more on 'getting the institutions right'.

Because it is technically flawed and morally bankrupt, the author argues, the economist's consequence-based, procedurally detached theory of the state has contributed to the growth of government. As part of the Kantian-Rawlsian contractarian project, this book seeks to return economics to its foundations in moral philosophy. Given the moral equivalence of persons, the greatest possible equal participation must be promoted, persons must be impartially treated and, because it is grounded in consequentialist social welfare theory (SWT), the economist's theory of the state must be rejected. Ad hoc deployment of SWT has facilitated discriminatory rent seeking and contributed to larger government. In contrast, this book argues that equal political participation and a constitutional impartiality constraint minimize rent seeking, respect individual perceptions of the 'public good' and underwrite the legitimacy of government. Economists, moral philosophers and political scientists will find this book a unique contribution to the literature.

Hiding the Guillotine examines the question of state involvement in violence by tracing the evolution of public executions in France. Why did the state move executions from the bloody and public stage of the guillotine to behind prison doors? In a fascinating exploration of a grim subject, Emmanuel Taïeb exposes the rituals and theatrical form of the death penalty and tells us who watched, who participated in, and who criticized (and ultimately brought an end to) a spectacle that the state called "punishment." France's abolition of the death penalty in 1981 has long overshadowed its suppression of public executions over forty years earlier. Since the Revolution, executions attracted tens of thousands of curious onlookers. But, gradually, there was a shift in attitude and the public no longer saw this as a civilized pastime. Why? Combining material from legal archives, police files, an executioner's notebooks, newspaper clippings, and documents relating to 566 executions, Hiding the Guillotine answers this question. Taïeb demonstrates the ways in which the media was at the vanguard of putting an end to the publicity surrounding the death penalty. The press had ample reason to be critical: cities were increasingly being used for leisure activity and prisons for those accused of criminal activity. The agitation surrounding each execution, coupled with a growing identification with the condemned, would blur these boundaries. Ranked among the top hundred history books by the website, Café du Web Historizo, Hiding the Guillotine has much to impart to students of legal history, human rights, and criminology, as well as to American historians.
