This title contributes to the understanding of the contemporary relationship between Muslims and the Western societies in which they live, focusing particularly on the UK. Chapters reflect on the nature of multiculturalism, as well as a range of specific aspects of daily life, including religious dialogue, gender, freedom of speech and politics.
Ralph Miliband was a leading contributor to the development of
Marxist political theory in the late twentieth century. His
writings remain highly influential in contemporary work on the
state and related areas of political theory and political
sociology.
Paul Wetherly provides a restatement and defence of the classical
Marxist theory of the state, developing an analytical approach that
draws on G.A. Cohen's functional interpretation of Marx's theory of
history. Instrumentalist and structuralist arguments are conceived
as related causal mechanisms within the functional approach, and
the principle of economic determination is shown to be consistent
with the relative autonomy of the state as an institution with its
own interests and capacities. This old-fashioned interpretation is
defended against rival approaches within contemporary Marxism,
notably Jessop's strategic relational approach.

This collection of new essays re-examines and evaluates central themes in the work of Ralph Miliband, a leading contributor to Marxist political theory in twentieth century. It provides an essential reference point for research within the Marxist tradition, and a valuable resource for students on a range of courses in political and social theory.
